Chapter 338: The Ranger
Chapter 338: The Ranger
"So — which Ordinary Title should I use?"
Li Wei thought for a moment. Based on everything he'd learned, compatibility between Destiny Grids and Profession Cards was critical.
First: the Trap Master Destiny Title was tied to the Hunter Card.
Second: the Hunter Card and the Woodcutter Card were complementary and partially overlapping. Add a Mountaineer Card and an Herbalist Card, and you'd have a full table of synergies.
So Li Wei chose a Four-Star Woodcutter Card — it would minimize internal conflict during the fusion with Trap Master.
By the same logic, the Ordinary Title contributed to the fusion should also avoid creating friction.
"Bear Hunter is strength-oriented. Definitely not ideal."
"Dog Butcher is agility-oriented. Somewhat compatible, but not a high-tier match."
"As for the Tracker title — it's Perception-oriented. And Trap Master also requires high Perception. So... should I use it?"
Honestly, Li Wei was reluctant. That was +2 Perception. And Perception seemed to have a ceiling — you couldn't just keep adding points freely.Take the two Neanderthals he'd killed today. Their Perception was probably +4 or +5. By all rights, Five-Star Cross-Border experts shouldn't be short two free attribute points. Wouldn't +6 Perception be worth having?
But after wrestling with it for a while, Li Wei finally decided to fuse the Tracker title.
The moment he confirmed the choice, he felt a pulse at the center of his brow. His Four-Grid Destiny Matrix resonated automatically — as if something fundamental had shifted.
In the next instant, threads of golden light flowed out from the Destiny Matrix, pooling in his palm and forming a blinding point of light. Then it detonated. His vision went white. He felt as if he were drifting through an endless void — until several lines of text swept silently past.
[You have completed the Destiny Title fusion. You have obtained a half-formed Code Name. Note: a half-formed Code Name requires a corresponding event to anchor it. Example: Saint George the Dragon Slayer — his Code Name was sealed by the act of slaying the dragon. Only by truly completing the corresponding event can a Code Name be made whole.]
[Your half-formed Code Name is — Ranger.]
[The current Code Name has been bound. It cannot be switched or removed. It can stack with one Ordinary Title and one Slaughter Title.]
[Note: The current Code Name can be enhanced six times. Each enhancement grants a 50% increase in numerical values.]
[Note: The current Code Name automatically includes all bonuses from Trap Master.]
[Note: The current Code Name is incomplete and cannot grant active bonuses. However, passive bonuses are active and permanent — they will not disappear or change with enhancement.]
[Passive Bonus 1: Your Hunter Destiny Grid +5. Current: 65.]
[Passive Bonus 2: Your Woodcutter Destiny Grid +5. Current: 60.]
[Passive Bonus 3: Your Scout Destiny Grid +5. Current: 23.]
[Code Name Mission generated. Please select one of the following tasks to complete:]
[1. Fell a cumulative total of 1,000 Two-Star or higher trees, and plant 10,000 trees, ensuring at least one-fifth survive and grow into One-Star trees. Current completion: 65%.]
[2. Hunt five Five-Star wild beasts and complete material processing.]
[3. Participate in and complete the ecological transformation and improvement of a region no smaller than 100 square kilometers.]
[4. Tame or raise two Five-Star Hunting Pets. Current completion: 50%.]
[Friendly reminder: Return to your main base and visit the Mission Hall of any major city to register for missions. Seek opportunities to complete your Code Name during those missions.]
[Friendly reminder: Code Name missions have no time limit, no location restriction, and persist across mission world cycles. However, each world cycle transition reduces completion by 10%.]
[Congratulations. By obtaining a Code Name — even a half-formed one — your authorization level within the All-Heavens Lord Alliance has increased. You will now unlock access to deeper knowledge and secrets, typically delivered via friendly reminders.]
[Congratulations. Your Hunter Destiny Grid and Woodcutter Destiny Grid have both exceeded 60. Your Perception permanently +1. Your baseline Perception is now +4 (without title bonuses). 2 points remain until the cap.]
[Friendly reminder: Perception, as a special hidden attribute, has conditional limits — it cannot be raised indefinitely. Choosing the right Profession Cards and the right destiny path is therefore critical.]
[Example: Your Hunter profession grants +1 to the Perception cap.]
[Your Woodcutter profession grants +1 to the Perception cap.]
[Your Rare Scout profession grants +2 to the Perception cap.]
[Your Second-Order Night Ranger advancement grants +2 to the Perception cap.]
[Your Farmer profession grants +0 to the Perception cap.]
[Note: If you also hold a Miner-type Profession Card, your Perception cap will be reduced by 1.]
[Note: Upgrading your ordinary Hunter Card or ordinary Woodcutter Card to Rare, or advancing to Third-Order Night Ranger, will each add +1 to the Perception cap.]
—
Li Wei read through the entire block of text carefully, and couldn't help but feel a quiet awe. He had grown too fast.
Night Owl had mentioned it before. The second-in-command of the Ministry of Internal Affairs had mentioned it. Even Thomas and Leon had said it: in the All-Heavens Lord Alliance, having no Code Name was simply not acceptable.
But he'd never had the chance to grind those minor missions, and the Code Name had been perpetually out of reach. He hadn't realized just how significant it was — or that Perception had a ceiling.
No wonder Li Yue's Perception was capped at +4. No wonder Scar Glenn's was only +2. No wonder the two Neanderthals' Perception hadn't been off the charts.
There was a hard limit.
Looking at it now, the Hunter Card and Woodcutter Card really did need to be upgraded eventually. Though for the moment, +6 Perception was already formidable enough.
Because next he still needed to upgrade the Scout Card to Three-Star, which would grant five more free attribute points.
So the situation was manageable.
What did need to be scheduled was completing the Ranger Code Name.
Four tasks. The first and fourth both looked promising.
Task One had apparently been seeded back in the rookie mission world. He'd chopped trees relentlessly to grind his Woodcutter Destiny Grid and help Leon build a special structure — but he'd also planted trees throughout the forest with equal dedication, and every tree he planted was done properly: high survival rate, full access to sunlight, water, and nutrients.
So even after losing 10% completion from the world cycle transition, the progress was still solid.
That was two years ago now. Two years — long enough for a sapling to grow into a One-Star tree.
He was willing to bet the completion percentage was still slowly climbing on its own. It shouldn't be too difficult.
Task Four was also worth pursuing — raising a Five-Star Hunting Pet.
Li Wei immediately thought of the Four-Star Warhorse the Neanderthal had dropped. One star away from Five-Star. Possibly achievable?
He'd need to ask Aunt Liang. After all, Adai's growth and evolution had apparently been her doing.
Setting the Code Name aside for now, Li Wei spent a Black Iron Clearance Token to upgrade his Rare Scout Card to Three-Star.
[You have bound a Three-Star Rare Scout Card. You are now a Three-Star Scout.]
[Your Agility attribute automatically +5.]
[You have obtained six Scout talents. Details omitted.]
[You have obtained 5 free attribute points.]
[Your current Scout Destiny Grid is 24.]
[Due to the Scout Card's bonuses, your Hunter Destiny Grid has increased. Current: 66. Your Woodcutter Destiny Grid has increased. Current: 61.]
[Due to the Hunter and Woodcutter Destiny Grid bonuses, your Scout Destiny Grid has increased. Current: 25.]
[Because this is your fourth profession and a Rare one, the advancement conditions will be significantly harder. You will need 10,000 scouting experience points + one Silver Clearance Token + 1,000 standard gold coins to advance to Four-Star Scout.]
—
As expected, the Rare Scout Card delivered. Li Wei checked his overall attributes.
Farmer Destiny Grid 22. Hunter Destiny Grid 66. Woodcutter Destiny Grid 61. Scout Destiny Grid 25.
A 4+4+3+3 configuration.
Baseline Life 300, baseline Stamina 440, baseline Strength 40, baseline Agility 42, baseline Defense 29, baseline Spiritual Power 15, baseline Perception +4.
With equipment and the Flame Duke title bonuses: Life +400, Stamina +540, Strength +45, Agility +51, Defense +52, Spiritual Power +24, Perception +5.
Quite impressive.
Without hesitation, Li Wei spent two free attribute points to raise his baseline Perception to +5 — which combined with his title brought it to the maximum of +6.
The remaining three free attribute points went into Defense, raising it from baseline 29 to 32. Once he got Defense to 40, he'd have Level 2 Awakening across all attributes.
Full Level 3 Awakening was still a ways off.
Li Wei couldn't help thinking of that rough-edged warrior. A genuine, unfiltered Master-Level Third-Order Warrior. Full Level 3 Awakening across the board. Five-Star. Which meant the higher you climbed, the harder it got.
He himself had four professions — just grinding Destiny Grids, upgrading to Rare, and completing a Code Name was already this complicated. A Five-Star player had five Profession Cards. A Six-Star player had six. The math alone was staggering.
While he was lost in thought, his stomach staged a protest. Fortunately, Javier had already thoughtfully arranged for the cook to prepare a proper meal.
He ate well and slept soundly.
The next morning, Liang Yuzhi kicked his door open with great enthusiasm, yanked off his blanket, and hauled him upright. "Xiao Wei, Xiao Wei — you really are my precious nephew! Quick, quick — I ran over here overnight. Don't worry about the camp, I just need to say a few things, then I'll leave immediately. Otherwise I think my heart might actually burst."
Aunt Liang was too enthusiastic. And too unpredictable. Li Wei was helpless, but he understood.
"Go ahead, Aunt Liang. What do you want to know?"
"How did you kill those two Barbarians? They were Five-Star Cross-Border experts!" Liang Yuzhi asked, practically vibrating with excitement, stars in her eyes. If it had been anyone else, she probably would have been furious enough to lose her composure entirely.
