Chapter 32: Wild Pheasant

Chapter 32: Wild Pheasant

Penny's words proved true.

Two days later, the family successfully harvested three sharper short knives, an equally excellent axe, a weeding hoe for removing grass, a shovel, and three sharp iron spearheads - these things mounted on wooden handles became genuine lethal weapons.

Penny even forged five triangular iron arrowheads for Li Wei.

Including that shovel, she didn't casually cast it using clay molds but instead repeatedly hammered heated iron ingots, performing surface carburization and other techniques to enhance hardness. Penny was quite meticulous about this.

So regardless of her previous intentions, indeed by now, the family's comprehensive ability to resist nature had greatly improved, which would greatly assist Li Wei's upcoming hunting.

Unfortunately, one furnace of molten iron could only produce this much, and the blacksmith shop soon went cold again.

Next they needed to find more iron ore and produce more charcoal, but these were Penny's responsibilities now.

So on the fourth day, which was Li Wei's twenty-fifth day as Family Head, Penny took an iron spear, a short knife, some dried rations, and left early in the morning to search for more iron ore.

This was her professional development path.

Simultaneously, this also meant Li Wei's brief collaboration with her had reached its end.Next month, who would become Family Head would be crucial.

Fila was the same, leaving early and returning late, frantically gathering to prepare for competing for Family Head next month.

Conversely, Li Wei wasn't particularly fixated on this, because next month, the wheat field would be ready for harvest. Regardless of who became Family Head, part of his main tasks would necessarily focus on the wheat field harvest.

You couldn't just watch the wheat ripen yet send him out hunting - that would violate logical reasoning.

Therefore, next month would still be a competition between Penny and Fila, though Fila currently held a tremendous advantage.

Thinking this, Li Wei leisurely finished his breakfast. He was learning to regulate his spleen and stomach, not completely relying on the 100 Health points from his Level 1 Awakening to exploit advantages. No matter how vigorous one's life force, there were always limits.

He could see this from observing Penny.

Penny had been injured twice consecutively, and even though she had recovered this time, that vigorous life aura about her had noticeably diminished considerably.

Especially with the recent labor, she looked somewhat fatigued, no longer possessing that little powerhouse feeling from before.

Therefore, avoiding injuries and daily health maintenance were important.

Afterward, Li Wei didn't rush to depart but went to the wheat field to make several simple scarecrows to frighten away those birds and beasts, then used a hoe to clear away weeds again. Only when the sun was high in the sky did he take the iron spear, short knife, bow and arrows, heading straight for the forest - he was officially beginning his hunt.

Now with only five days remaining, he needed to complete two units of game.

So Li Wei's idea was to hunt larger animals, like deer or wild boar? Never mind, he didn't dare provoke wild boars for now.

Although the season was approaching autumn, temperatures remained unbearably hot. Never mind deep in the forest - even at the forest edge, the vegetation grew so luxuriantly it was downright frightening.

At first Li Wei tried beating the grass with a wooden spear, but eventually gave up, because in this waist-deep wild grass, he wouldn't become a hunter, only a fool.

Moreover, the grass teemed with poisonous insects, all sorts of toxic mosquitoes instantly covering him with bites all over his body.

Hunting was nowhere that easy?

Finally forced by necessity, Li Wei first broke many branches, attempting to weave himself a straw rain cape, but halfway through weaving, his eyes suddenly lit up as he remembered something - he could completely weave a fish trap to catch fish!

Speaking of which, fishing would be somewhat easier.

But the prerequisite was finding some flexible branches suitable for weaving. Those large tree branches wouldn't do - he needed vines.

Fortunately Fila and Penny hadn't thought of this...

Wait, they might not have failed to think of it. Penny's main profession was Craftsman, her entire focus there, while Fila was clearly a wilderness survival expert - it would be strange if she hadn't thought of it. Perhaps this was her trump card that she would reveal at some unknown time.

Thinking this, Li Wei slowly and laboriously skirted around the forest edge.

"Flutter flutter!"

A flock of wild pheasants flying out from deep in the grass startled him, but by the time he reacted, these wild pheasants had already flown far away, completely beyond pursuit.

But wait, why should I chase them? I have a bow!

Li Wei felt rather foolish, immediately taking down his hunting bow and drawing an unfletched wooden arrow. Within ten steps, he had considerable confidence in hitting his target.

Moreover, unfletched wooden arrows were easy to make - no need to regret missed shots.

Consider this a rehearsal; at worst he could go fishing.

Having mentally prepared himself, Li Wei adjusted his posture, bending at the waist as he slowly advanced through the grass. That flock of wild pheasants was no longer visible, but they were certainly somewhere nearby.

Creeping forward like this for over ten meters, another flock indeed fluttered up from the grass ahead - truly a flock, a full dozen or more. This time Li Wei's reaction kept up, or perhaps his daily training over the past twenty days showed results, allowing him to utilize the Professional Hunter talent at a high level.

In an instant he drew and shot, without even deliberate aiming, that unfletched wooden arrow flying forth simply, cleanly, directly striking one wild pheasant and bringing it down.

At that moment, Li Wei felt almost dreamlike. This differed from shooting that gray wolf before, because back then the distance was close, the situation sudden, leaving no time for thought - too much luck involved. Recalling it afterward, he couldn't articulate any experience, only blankness.

But now the distance exceeded ten meters, with full awareness throughout, the entire process from drawing the bow, nocking the arrow, shooting, to hitting - all flowing smoothly. This was true experience, true skill, something genuinely his own.

Hmm, at least he had gained this understanding now.

Therefore, without hesitation or retrieving that downed pheasant, he quickly drew his only fletched wolf-tooth arrow, directly drawing the hunting bow to full draw, and shot skyward!

Even though that pheasant flock had now flown twenty-five meters away, he still felt absolute certainty of hitting, just like during his training over the past twenty days.

Perhaps ordinary people couldn't achieve this, but don't forget he still had 40% accuracy bonus.

All he needed was to let this accuracy bonus unfold to its maximum extent, and that sufficed.

Just pheasants!

With the bowstring's twang, another distant pheasant fell.

So simple.

So this was the hunter's feeling.

Li Wei felt his entire being floating, not out of control, but as if his whole body had entered an adrenaline-surge state, his physical coordination, hearing, and vision greatly enhanced, even his thinking crystal clear.

Perhaps this was the legendary peak state.

Quickly retrieving his prey, simultaneously information appeared - 10 Hunting Experience gained. Shooting one pheasant gave 5 Experience, quite good, bringing his Hunting Experience to 75 points.

Unfortunately, that wild pheasant flock was too frightened, flying several hundred meters away completely disappearing.

Otherwise, he might have added more achievements today.

Carrying the two pheasants, he swiftly returned to camp. The weather was scorching - this game needed prompt handling, delay risked spoilage.

But as Li Wei hurried back to camp, he saw Fila steadily walking back from afar, carrying a bamboo basket on her back.

At this moment, he suddenly had a rather bad premonition.

Indeed, as a wilderness survival expert, how could Fila possibly forget using fish traps for fishing?

By now she had long completed the family's main tasks - all fish catches were entirely her own.

In other words, she could completely donate more resources to the family, gaining more Family Contribution points. Next month's Family Head would undoubtedly be hers.
