Chapter 25: The Cunning Wolf
Chapter 25: The Cunning Wolf
Li Wei had only managed to craft three unfletched wooden arrows and two wolf-tooth arrows by this point. The former were relatively simple, but the latter proved quite troublesome to make as he lacked extensive experience.
However, when Penny came to inspect his work, she pointed out numerous deficiencies, including his carving techniques.
"These few arrows should suffice for now. Practice with them first to get a feel for it."
Penny enthusiastically set up a simple target for Li Wei. He walked about twenty paces away and, by the firelight, clumsily nocked an unfletched wooden arrow onto the string. Penny immediately corrected several technical errors—she seemed quite knowledgeable about archery despite not being a hunter herself.
After firing seven or eight arrows consecutively, Li Wei gradually grasped the essentials. On his eleventh attempt, he finally struck the target accurately.
It was during this shot that he sensed the intangible enhancement provided by the One-Star Hunter Card.
Yes, he could easily control his heartbeat and breathing, especially when slowly drawing the bow—this sensation was particularly pronounced.
In other words, the bonus from the One-Star Hunter Card wasn't a flat 30% accuracy applied to every haphazard shot. How could there be accuracy if the arrow didn't even hit the target?
So he needed to continuously adjust his own state. Only when he reached his optimal condition, at least above the passing threshold, would he receive that additional accuracy bonus.
From then on, Li Wei seemed to get on the right track, mastering the essence. He basically managed to hit the target with every arrow, and his precision kept improving. He could even subtly perceive the balance point of each unfletched wooden arrow and roughly predict its flight path. This felt truly miraculous—the One-Star Hunter Card was absolutely amazing.
"Let's stop here for today, George. You go rest first. Fila and I will keep watch."
Penny picked up a wooden spear. Wolf howls continued relentlessly outside the camp, with some gray wolves even attempting to leap over the perimeter wall. This was blatant harassment tactics, and there was no perfect counter.
But for now, their family still couldn't engage the wolf pack in a decisive battle and could only endure it.
Li Wei understood this well. He nodded, then took the hunting bow and a wooden spear back to his room to rest. He needed to ensure he had ample stamina—he was the main combatant now.
He enjoyed another good night's sleep, sleeping soundly despite the constant wolf howls throughout the night.
Not only Fila and Penny found this remarkable, but even he himself was amazed—he never knew he possessed such a talent.
Last night, the wolf pack didn't breach the perimeter wall, but the harassment was continuous. Fila's voice grew hoarse, and both she and Penny had massive dark circles under their eyes, utterly exhausted.
The good news was that Penny's injuries had basically healed, and she was already practicing spear thrusts with the wooden spear.
Undoubtedly, her Health attribute had also reached First-Level Awakening; otherwise, she wouldn't have recovered so quickly.
"Let's have the decisive battle tonight!"
Seeing Li Wei approach, Penny made the declaration. She was ready, and besides, they couldn't delay any longer—the wolf pack would wear them down completely.
Fila was too exhausted to even speak. After collecting dew, she skipped breakfast and went straight to her room to sleep.
Penny persevered to cook breakfast and gave Li Wei some pointers before finally going to rest herself.
After eating, Li Wei didn't immediately practice archery. Instead, he strolled around the camp. The valley was tranquil in the early morning, with bright sunlight streaming from the east and mist flowing through low-lying areas. From a distance, it looked like a fairyland, yet who knew how many dangers lurked within or where those wolves were hiding?
With this thought, he climbed up using a simple ladder—likely made by Penny last night. It wasn't very stable but proved quite functional.
If he shot arrows from here, he'd have a much broader field of view.
"Maybe we could build an arrow tower in the future?"
An impractical idea flashed through Li Wei's mind. Just then, he seemed to hear something. His heart stirred slightly, but he pretended not to notice, continuing to look around from the ladder. He even deliberately leaned half his body out while rapidly running simulation drills in his mind.
A few seconds later, a gray wolf emerged from the grass nearby, charging arrogantly forward. It leaped up just outside the perimeter wall, almost reaching the wall's height. Li Wei could clearly see the gleam of sunlight on the fangs in the gray wolf's mouth!
How utterly arrogant!
But Li Wei was prepared. He steadied his feet, sank his waist, and as the gray wolf leaped, he drew his bow and nocked an arrow. Though his movements still lacked fluidity, he couldn't pass up such a conveniently delivered target.
Li Wei barely needed to aim. In an instant, the wolf-tooth arrow pierced through the gray wolf's throat.
But almost simultaneously, a foul wind swept toward him. Li Wei caught a glimpse of a black shadow from the corner of his eye. Before he could react, a tremendous force slammed into him, throwing him off balance. He tumbled over the perimeter wall!
However, in this critical moment, Li Wei decisively abandoned the hunting bow, grabbed the wall with both hands, and with all his strength, hauled himself back over. He landed heavily on the ground, cold sweat pouring down like a waterfall. His heart pounded wildly, and his mind went blank for several seconds!
Damn it!
He had set a trap for the gray wolf, never expecting that he himself would become the prey in a classic ambush scenario.
That Black Wolf King was far too cunning!
"George! Are you alright?"
Penny and Fila rushed out upon hearing the commotion. Seeing Li Wei sitting on the ground drenched in sweat, pale-faced, and looking utterly disheveled, they were greatly alarmed.
"I'm fine. I killed one gray wolf but almost got snatched away by that black wolf. I lost the hunting bow too—that creature seems almost supernatural."
Li Wei spoke, still shaken from the fright.
"Exactly. I also think that Black Wolf King recognizes bows and arrows. Previously, Sam was killed by it using this exact tactic—luring from the front while ambushing from behind. It's simply too cunning."
Penny said with a grave expression. She then climbed the ladder and saw that besides a fresh pool of wolf blood outside the wall, there wasn't a single wolf in sight. As for the hunting bow, it had been torn and smashed to pieces.
What a cunning beast!
However, it wasn't a major problem.
In fact, one could say this was a good thing because, so far, this was already the third wolf Li Wei had killed.
Penny looked at Li Wei with anticipation in her eyes.
Li Wei understood her gaze. Though he couldn't speak openly, he asked indirectly, "Sister, could you make another hunting bow for me?"
"No problem. Can we launch the decisive battle tonight?" Penny gave an affirmative response. A hunting bow was nothing—if she could make one, she could make a second.
Even if it was free, even if it made this competitor before her increasingly powerful, potentially turning family decisions into his one-man show in the future—so what? At the very least, it would ensure mission completion.
Furthermore, as a Professional Craftsman, her role within this family was indispensable.
In short, it was best to complete the Wolf Menace Mission as soon as possible and return everything to normal.
"No problem! We fight tonight."
Li Wei also solemnly repeated the declaration. The Wolf Menace Mission had granted him the greatest benefits, making him the biggest winner. It was about time to end it.
