Chapter 13: The Hidden Sixth Old Man
Chapter 13: The Hidden Sixth Old Man
Thunder rumbled across the mountain ridge.
Dense raindrops swept through like heavy machine gun bullets, occasionally mixed with hailstones that struck like armor-piercing rounds, making his whole body ache. With the late hour and the heavy rain shrouding everything, his vision was completely white.
But he could faintly hear Fila's cries for help coming from the direction of the stream. Li Wei charged forward relying entirely on his familiarity with the terrain. As the distance closed, Fila's shouts grew clearer, but where was the cow?
"Help! Save me! George!"
Fila was still screaming desperately. Then Li Wei saw what was happening—it was that same old wolf he had encountered during the day, now attacking Fila.
The creature had already pinned Fila down and was continuously trying to bite her throat and stomach. It was clearly an experienced, qualified hunter.
But Fila was equally experienced, curled up on the ground with her hands protecting her neck and throat, her legs kicking wildly. Although the old wolf had bitten her many times, the wounds weren't fatal.
There was no cow at all. Fila had simply donated the cow to the family, hoping he and Penny would come to her rescue.
Pretty clever.
"Get away!"Li Wei shouted loudly. Even though there was no cow, he couldn't just stand by and watch her die. The plot logic had to make sense.
Unexpectedly, the old wolf had gone completely berserk, perhaps from extreme hunger or stimulated by Fila's blood. It abandoned Fila and lunged directly at Li Wei.
Li Wei couldn't see clearly at all, only instinctively gripping his spear and pointing it forward. The next moment, the wooden spear in his hand suddenly grew heavy as tremendous force surged through it, flipping him completely backward. Only then did he realize what happened.
The old wolf had been impaled clean through by the wooden spear.
Thank you, heavy rain. Thank you, wooden spear.
"Boom!"
A flash of lightning crossed the sky as thunder rolled in. Just as Li Wei's belated realization made his heart nearly stop from fright, several lines of information silently appeared.
[You saved a family member, you gained 5 Family Contribution points]
[You killed a lone wolf exiled from its pack, you gained 15 Hunting Experience points]
[You obtained a wolf corpse, will you donate it to the family? You will gain 2 Family Contribution points]
—
Of course he donated it.
Li Wei quickly transformed from terrified to ecstatic, even scrambling to his feet in high spirits. He carried the badly injured, barely breathing Fila back to the house, then returned to retrieve the old wolf's corpse. As for that cow, there was nothing he could do about it for now.
And he had truly struck gold this time.
Originally he had 4 Family Contribution points, 45 Farming Experience points, 18 Construction Experience points, 1 Gathering Experience point, 10 Fishing Experience points, and 0.6 Cooking Experience points.
Today's food expenses had deducted another 2 Fishing Experience points.
But now he suddenly had 11 Family Contribution points.
This was like hitting the jackpot from an old miser.
"Mom, mom, what happened to you? Don't scare me like this! If something happens to you, what will George and I do?"
When Li Wei carried Fila back inside, Penny—who had stayed completely dry—knelt beside the blood-covered, pale, barely breathing Fila, crying her eyes out in utter despair.
She hadn't stepped outside at all, since it was pouring rain, and from a plot perspective, her inability to find Fila was perfectly reasonable.
Li Wei was already accustomed to this and couldn't be bothered to care. He directly removed his soaked clothes, wrapped himself in the sheepskin blanket, and went to sleep. Nothing in the world was more important than maintaining his health—he hoped he wouldn't catch a cold.
Too bad they couldn't light a bonfire inside the house, or this wouldn't be a problem.
As for Penny, after crying for a while, she went to sleep on her own. Fila would definitely be eliminated—she would die without needing a Plot Kill vote. So tomorrow morning, a new player would appear, and this new player had a fifty percent chance of becoming George's wife, and a fifty percent chance of becoming her husband.
But either way, Fila would leave behind some inheritance, just like that cheap father had left his portion.
A guaranteed profit either way.
The rain continued intermittently throughout the night, finally clearing completely by daybreak.
The house never leaked from start to finish, having withstood the test, but this also proved that Penny the craftsman truly had some skills.
When Li Wei woke up, he was momentarily stunned. In the other corner, Penny hadn't woken yet, but Fila was gone.
Dead?
Not even a body remained.
Hurriedly changing into his still cold, damp clothes, he rushed outside to find Fila had already lit a bonfire, cooking the familiar wheat porridge over it.
And that old wolf had even been skinned and deboned.
"George, my good child, you've made me so proud. You'll become an outstanding hunter."
Fila turned around and gave Li Wei a loving smile. Bloodstains still marked her body, some wounds already scabbed over, but she seemed like a completely different person.
Originally she had been sickly and weak, with little vitality, as if she might kick the bucket at any moment.
But today she looked like a healthy, energetic middle-aged woman.
Even healthier than Li Wei himself.
Dead?
Heh. Li Wei had no doubt that Fila's life expectancy was longer than his own.
"You—"
Li Wei was shocked but immediately stopped himself. He knew where the problem lay—Fila was indeed a Sneaky Player. She must have privately accumulated many experience points without immediately using them to level up. Last night when she suffered severe injuries, she finally used those experience points to exchange for free attribute points. It seemed she had repeatedly allocated points to her vitality attribute.
Just then Penny also emerged from the house and looked utterly shocked when she saw this scene.
"Penny, George, I believe we should build a sturdy wall, then construct a simple cowshed and storage room. Additionally, we should clear another field for farming. Summer will pass quickly, and winter will arrive. I don't want our family to freeze or starve to death."
Fila continued speaking, her tone calm yet leaving no room for argument.
Penny wanted to say something, clearly dissatisfied—she had been planning to build a brick kiln and couldn't do other work.
But the next moment, several lines of information appeared in succession.
[Professional Chef *** donated 10 kilograms of wheat to the family, designated as seeds. She gained 3 Family Contribution points]
