Chapter 101: Wilderness Crows
Chapter 101: Wilderness Crows
The night passed peacefully.
Early the next morning, after eating breakfast, Li Wei stepped into the light of the dawn and embarked on his journey south.
It was still the same route as last time, so he did not have to worry about getting lost. Even carrying over twenty-five kilograms of weight did not slow Li Wei down. His steps were light, and his body's feedback to the external environment was exceptionally good. He could only say that with his overall physical attributes improved, any way he moved felt right.
The temperature at this time was around a little over ten degrees Celsius. Looking around, the mountains and plains were draped in lush greenery. The sky was very blue, and the sunlight felt warm. Little birds chirped on the branches, and the flowing water in the nearby Creek seemed to laugh. With a buzz, a large-headed fly flew arrogantly past, like a wilderness ranger riding a 300CC motorcycle. In the distance, butterflies fluttered about. A faint floral scent mixed with the freshness of the soil lingered at his nose.
This scene felt very familiar.
Indeed, although he could not determine the exact time, it was roughly correct. Li Wei had been in this world for exactly one entire year.
Walking briskly along the way, Li Wei would stop to rest every three or four kilometers. He was not in a hurry to travel; keeping his physical condition within a normal range at all times was the safest approach.
Because of this, although he originally planned to reach the mountain entrance thirty kilometers away by dusk that day, Li Wei reset his target to twenty kilometers away.
In fact, when he arrived, it was only around four in the afternoon. His full Stamina of 200 points still had 130 points remaining.
It had to be said, the Level 1 Awakening of the Stamina attribute was truly too useful.Next, he found a leeward Valley and used his shovel to dig a temporary camp in a relatively hidden location. He set up a simple tent and also dug a smoke-dispersing stove to scatter the smoke.
Well, he really knew how to do this. He was not completely useless after all.
After digging the smoke-dispersing stove, he snapped off some larger branches nearby and arranged them around the simple tent for basic concealment.
Since he had been traveling south along the stream the entire way, there was no need to worry about water sources. Thus, he only carried one waterskin, and he had already drunk all the water inside it along the road.
So at this moment, he first went to the Creek to fetch enough water with his iron pot and boiled it on the marching stove. At the same time, he heated some white bread on the side. Once the water temperature dropped, he filled his waterskin. Finally, using the hot water, he took out his dried venison, dried wild greens, and mushrooms, chopped them up, and tossed them in to boil. A pot of wild greens and meat porridge was thus successfully made.
Of course, it definitely was not as delicious as what Fila usually made. Even with the exact same ingredients, he just could not replicate that flavor. Regardless, this was pretty magical in itself.
After eating and drinking his fill, he cleaned up the traces and rested for a while. The sun was only just beginning to slowly set. It was still early, yet Li Wei's Stamina had already effortlessly recovered to 190 points.
This was the benefit of always being healthy, properly maintained, not overworked, uninjured, and fully nourished. Of course, the role of the white bread was equally irreplaceable.
Next, he wandered around the temporary camp and casually gathered some fresh wild greens. He planned to use them as a side dish for tomorrow morning.
Finally, taking advantage of the still reasonably bright daylight, he took his dagger, found a few birch trees, and cut down several straight branches as thick as an arm.
The night was long, so he might as well whittle a few Wooden Spears to pass the time.
Actually, he was wondering if he could make a Wooden Spear trap—tying several Wooden Spears together to form a hedgehog-like contraption, burying the bottom end in the dirt to secure it. It certainly would not work against humans, but if a wild beast barged in, it could achieve miraculous results.
That night, Li Wei did not sleep soundly. Even though he used the Wooden Spear trap to block the entrance of the simple tent, it did not make him feel safe.
So for the most part, he only slept lightly for short moments before immediately jolting awake.
This was the drawback of having no sturdy house and no safe Camp.
For a single person to survive and develop in such a wilderness, it was truly too difficult.
When the sky barely brightened, Li Wei glanced at his Stamina bar. It had been 190 last night, but now it had dropped to 150. This was caused by the lack of sleep, severe mental exhaustion, and being constantly on edge.
There was nothing left to say. He went back to sleep.
This time, he successfully slept for over two hours. When he woke up again, it was already bright and sunny outside.
Fortunately, he was not in a rush. He put away the Wooden Spear trap, fetched water, started a fire, and ate a hearty meal. By then, it was roughly eight in the morning, but his Stamina bar had successfully maxed out.
This point was very important.
Because having full Stamina meant that in the next four or five hours, as long as there was no intense combat drain, he would be incredibly resilient.
Once packed up and his traces cleared, Li Wei even bundled up the five Wooden Spears he had whittled last night onto his backpack to take them along.
He did not mind a bit of extra weight. Compared to fifty kilograms of iron ore, this was nothing at all.
But these Wooden Spears were his traps for resting at night, and his means of dealing with enemies in an emergency.
Li Wei's goal today was to reach the mountain pass ten kilometers away, while relying on the favorable environment to observe and scout the area around it.
He was not in a hurry to go to Kakh City, even though Kakh City was located about twenty to twenty-five kilometers away from the mountain pass.
Actually, he kind of wanted to go check out that bandit lair, but ultimately gave up the idea. More than half a year had already passed, so that place had definitely been reoccupied by bandits. By himself, he could not come and go freely, because some tricks were not suited for repeated use.
Hitting the road this time, Li Wei was very cautious. Not only did he slow down his pace, but he also frequently observed his surroundings, focusing particularly on checking the ground under his feet.
The tracks he had left from walking by last autumn had long since vanished. There were no roads at all; he relied entirely on the stream to the east to determine his direction.
In truth, the water volume of this stream was already quite large here, but it was still not enough for boating. Moreover, the mountain terrain was complex, and the water flow was sometimes turbulent and sometimes scattered, making it of little practical value.
Li Wei estimated that further downstream, this stream might merge into a larger river. This river was probably located near Kakh City. It was an alluvial plain, after all, making it very suitable for large populations to gather; this was all common knowledge.
Around ten in the morning, despite slowing his pace, Li Wei smoothly arrived at that mountain pass. Along the way, apart from birds and beasts, he saw not a single trace of a human. It was incredibly desolate.
To the east and to the west, there were rolling mountain ridges rising and falling. Only to the south was it flat and unobstructed. In this clear weather, he could even see the smoke rising from the Kakh fortress, although he could not make out any more details beyond that.
Outside the mountain pass, the stream was like a tamed wild horse, slowly pouring into the plains like a small water channel.
After flowing south for about three or four kilometers and passing through a stretch of forest, a structure resembling a stone bridge could be seen. There were also some low, blurry buildings nearby.
It seemed to be a Farmstead, but it was unknown if anyone lived there.
However, this Farmstead definitely had a road leading straight to Kakh City.
Li Wei hesitated and observed, ultimately deciding not to rush over. Instead, he pondered and examined. Last spring, from where did that cheap father drive the ox cart into the mountain pass, and where exactly was he robbed by that gang of bandits?
This point was very important.
In fact, as Li Wei traveled along, although he found many areas where an ox cart could barely pass, there was a cliff several meters high right here at the mountain pass. An ox cart could not possibly traverse this no matter what.
Last autumn, when the previous version of Penny led the way, they passed through this area very hurriedly, and Li Wei did not think much of it.
Revisiting this old place today, he finally realized that the previous version of Penny must have taken a shortcut.
Therefore, there had to be an intersection capable of accommodating an ox cart.
With this thought in mind, Li Wei first ruled out the eastern mountain ridges. He had already walked those areas twice. The ridges were even steeper, making walking rugged enough as it was, let alone driving an ox cart.
Thus, he headed west, crossing several mountain ridges along the way. After walking for about five or six kilometers and passing through a dense forest, he shockingly stumbled upon a road that wasn't considered good—it could even be called terrible.
But at the very least, this was a road. A road that people walked on, capable of letting carriages and horses pass.
At this moment, the road looked completely silent. However, based on the mud and dust clinging to the trees along the way, as well as the uneven ruts on the ground, he knew this road was very likely the one connecting Kakh City and Weir Province. It should also be the road that his cheap father took when he fled with the whole family driving the ox cart last spring, and then right here, they were robbed.
So much so that the ox cart was forced to deviate from the route, weaving through a certain Valley until it charged all the way to their current Camp.
During this process, Penny probably pinpointed the general direction of the bandits' hiding place, which was why she went searching all the way over.
So she was still too naive.
The bandits inherently did not want their hiding place to be known. Moreover, they were women, disguised as men, crossing the wilderness—women who looked very healthy and strong. To top it off, they even yelled Anderson's name. Who could guarantee that if Anderson answered, he would not be cursed by dark magic?
Speaking of which, that bandit gang's hideout was at least twenty-five kilometers away from this road. This showed that they were actually quite cautious.
Under normal circumstances, how could it be so easy to find them?
Thinking like this, Li Wei suddenly caught the faint sound of crows cawing. It was far away, but with the overall enhancement of his physical fitness, not only had his eyesight grown stronger, his hearing had also become sharper.
Logically, it was perfectly normal for crows to appear in this wilderness. Just last month—that is, a few days before the bandits attacked—a flock of crows had also circled and flown past the Valley where the Camp was located.
However, Li Wei just had an indescribable feeling, and as the crows' cawing drew closer, this feeling grew increasingly intense.
So without hesitation, he crouched into the tall grass and quickly took off his backpack, hugging it to his chest.
The reason was simple. The set of two-star Leather Armor he was currently wearing possessed a certain trait: it provided a degree of concealment in the mountain forests and under the cover of night.
But if he carried his backpack, even if he hid in the grass, this concealment trait of the two-star Leather Armor could not be utilized.
Just as Li Wei finished preparing, he heard the sound of flapping wings flying over the forest canopy. They were swooping low, circling widely over a large area.
Damn it!
At this moment, he was basically certain. Something was wrong, very wrong.
What kind of flock of crows would hover at a low altitude right above a forest!
Could it be that he had been discovered?
But that should not be the case. Although he walked very fast along the way, he paid close attention to his surroundings and did his utmost to ensure his concealment. Moreover, these crows had arrived extremely quickly. They had not been continuously circling this area; instead, they seemed to fly straight over from a specific direction.
No way, are there actually Witches in this world?
Li Wei shuddered in fright!
