Chapter 245: "Xu Su, Do You Know...
Xu Su said nothing, her eyes fixed on the black sedan in the alley that was visibly rocking back and forth...
Zhou Mochen leaned over, following her gaze to peek out the window beside the passenger seat. A few seconds later, he covered her eyes. "So that’s what you’re staring at. Don’t be curious about this stuff."
Xu Su pulled his hand away. Staring at the four rings on the rear of the car in the alley, she asked hesitantly, "What brand is that?"
"An Audi. I can’t make out the model." Zhou Mochen glanced at the girl, who was clearly out of sorts, and smiled. "You like this one? How about I have someone pick one up for you later?"
"No!" Xu Su looked away, slumping back against the seat in defeat. "Just drive. Let’s not stay here."
Zhou Mochen’s smile vanished. He started the car, then turned his head to ask, "You know that car?"
"No."
"Really?" Zhou Mochen nodded. "Then you must know someone who could be in it."
Xu Su started, glaring up at him. "Don’t be ridiculous!"
"Alright, I’ll drop it." The black Land Rover drove familiar roads onto campus, stopping outside an academic building.
Just as Xu Su was about to get out, Zhou Mochen pulled her back. He looked at her, his tone stern. "Xu Su, I don’t care which one of your classmates was in that car just now. Stay away from her. Do you hear me?"
’He was so clever; a moment’s thought was all he needed to get the general idea...’
Xu Su stared downward for a long moment, lost in thought...
"You can be stubborn about anything else, but you have to listen to me on this." Zhou Mochen squeezed her hand. "You know what was going on in that car, don’t you?"
Xu Su looked up. "I’m not a kid."
Zhou Mochen chuckled, then leaned over to kiss her on the forehead. "If you know, then stay away from whoever was in that car," he urged, still concerned. "Just focus on your studies at school. I’ll come pick you up tonight. Don’t give me a reason to worry."
Xu Su nodded absently, not really hearing a word he said. Her mind was a complete mess as she got out of the car. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen...
’Was that Gu Yunjia...?’
Her face was pale as she slumped into her seat. Qian Jia called her name several times, but she didn’t react.
Qian Jia slapped Xu Su’s shoulder and shouted in her ear, "Susu! Did you hear me? Earth to Susu!"
"....!" The shout was so loud it made Xu Su jump. "What’s wrong?"
Qian Jia said, "I should be asking you what’s wrong. You’re completely out of it. I’ve been calling your name forever, and you just ignored me."
"....It’s nothing."
Xu Su had so much she wanted to say, but the matter was too serious for a young woman’s reputation. She didn’t dare speak of it carelessly, not even to Qian Jia and Huang Feng.
She sat through two classes in a daze, completely unable to focus. She didn’t dare tell anyone in her life, but keeping the secret bottled up was eating at her...
During the break, she pulled out her phone and scrolled through the group chat, looking at Sika’s daily updates.
The Qingxuan Sect Elite group was like one big family. Besides gaming, the young girl Sika loved sharing bits of her daily life in the chat, especially her woes about failing to win over her distant, handsome crush.
Many of the other women in the group offered her advice and strategies, but sadly, she’d made no progress.
As Xu Su read, her fingers started tapping a message on the screen: "I’m in a difficult situation. Can you guys give me some advice?"
It was a weekday, so most people in the group were at work or school. After a moment, only Liu Yun Fairy replied: "Susu, what’s wrong? Fight with your boyfriend? Don’t even ask. If you’re asking, just break up!"
"....It has nothing to do with my boyfriend." Xu Su was speechless for a moment. Composing herself, she began to formulate her words: "It’s about a former good friend of mine. We don’t talk much anymore for... certain reasons. But I just found out she’s done something wrong. Should I try and talk to her about it?"
Liu Yun Fairy: "What kind of ’something wrong’? Petty theft? Getting into fights? It depends on the situation. It also depends on what your relationship with this friend was like. Were you ever close enough that you have the right to meddle?"
"Ah! So it’s a ’she’!" Liu Yun Fairy realized before Xu Su could even reply. "Which of your female friends is having relationship problems? A love triangle? Is she homewrecking? Or is it some other kind of moral issue?"
’...Just from the pronoun "she," Liu Yun was able to come up with that whole string of scenarios. Xu Su had to admit, she was impressed...’
After a moment’s hesitation, she was still too embarrassed to be specific. "...It’s a moral issue."
Just as she sent the message, the bell for class rang. Xu Su put her phone away without checking the chat again.
When the bell for the last class of the afternoon finally rang, Qian Jia and Huang Feng dragged Xu Su to the cafeteria for dinner. Afterward, the two of them had to go back to their dorm to grab something. Since Xu Su didn’t live on campus, she couldn’t be bothered to climb the stairs to the girls’ dormitory with them. She waved goodbye to her two best friends and headed back toward the classroom alone.
Xu Su took out her phone to check the group chat as she walked.
Several people had replied to her question from that afternoon.
Some said that since it was a moral issue, a *former* friend had no place to pass judgment and would probably just get chewed out for it.
Others pointed out that since Xu Su was a high school student, her friend must be one too, which made a moral problem of this nature very serious...
Sika, who was also in high school, replied as well, specifically tagging Xu Su: "My advice is to stay out of it. You aren’t friends anymore. No matter how serious her moral problem is, a former best friend is the last person she’ll want judging her."
Sika was a QQ VIP, so her chat text was a cool, eye-catching black.
Xu Su stared at the message for a few seconds. ’She has a really good point...’
She was typing a reply as she headed upstairs when a familiar figure in the corner of her vision caught her eye.
The honors classes were on the third floor, and they were already on the third floor, but the figure was still running further up...
Xu Su froze. Countless tragic news reports flashed through her mind, and she subconsciously quieted her steps and followed the figure upward.
The academic buildings at City No.1 High School were all five stories tall, and the rooftops weren’t locked. Back when Xu Su and Xi Zirong were dating, they had loved coming up to the roof on sunny days to feel the breeze; it had been their own private, secret spot.
So, Xu Su was very familiar with this place.
"What are you following me for? Afraid I’ll do something rash?"
Gu Yunjia had her back to Xu Su, her hands folded over the rooftop railing as she stared down below. Her voice, carried on the cold wind, sounded bleak and lonely.
Xu Su flinched. After a moment of hesitation, she took a decisive step forward onto the rooftop.
"I just came up here for some air. I’m just as resilient as you. You weren’t affected by those rumors back then, and I won’t be affected by them now."
Xu Su looked at her back and nodded, then, realizing Gu Yunjia couldn’t see her, said softly, "Okay. I know."
The atmosphere between them was awkward, and the rooftop wind was bitingly cold. Xu Su stood there stiffly for a moment. Seeing that Gu Yunjia seemed stable, she prepared to leave and head back to the classroom.
Gu Yunjia turned around and stared at Xu Su for a long moment before speaking, her expression unreadable. "Xu Su, do you know why I hate you?"
She looked like she was settling in for a long conversation. Xu Su, who had started to turn away, froze. "Because of Xi Zirong?"
