Chapter 231 231: Leo vs Ten lions
Chapter 231 231: Leo vs Ten lions
[3rd POV]
The last hyena was ragdolled into the cracked sand.
The open area, which had little to no vegetation due to the buffalo herd that had passed a few days ago, was littered with corpses. The land was sandy due to being ploughed by the hooves of beasts, and it drank the blood of the hyenas and lions alike with great thirst.
There was no red even after the battle, only black patches where blood spilt.
The last hyena struggled to get back up. There was a deep wound on her shoulder in the form of a claw mark that was nearly as big as her head.
But a huge paw slammed into her, making her crash once more. The lion pinned her down immediately.
"Was it worth it?" Sumu asked, not killing her instantly.
As he pinned her down, he allowed his blood to drop onto the hyena. There was a wound on the side of his face and his ears.
He was asking if that small injury was worth their lives.
The rest of the lions gathered behind him and watched. Some were injured as well, while others looked completely unharmed. This was because the hyenas swarmed a few of them instead of spreading their limited numbers across their entire ranks.
The hyena whooped and bellowed under the lion's paw.
Sumu liked the helplessness he felt under his paw. The hyena struggled with all her might, but her might was limited compared to his. He easily held her down with his weight and two limbs.
There were no other hyenas alive, so it wouldn't be wrong to play this one a little. Perhaps it would satisfy his anger.
Sumu released a growl and tore down violently. His claw sank on the skin so he tore the hyena like a scissor through fabric. Once, twice, three times. He tore until the skin was peeled off and he sank his claws into bare flesh.
Now the laughter of the hyena sounded more like a cry.
"....it was worth it," the hyena said in the end, making Sumu grow wide eyes at the audacity after suffering from such wounds.
He dug his claws deeply and this time, he sliced through muscle.
The hyena opened her mouth wide for another release of pain. But her cries never reached the ear because a louder sound filled the entire area.
Sumu, including all the other lions, felt the hair on their back stand. Their muscles tensed, some pulled back instinctively from an invisible presence and they all looked towards the sky.
Vultures.
Their ears flicked as a roar expanded like thunder in the sky.
The sound was guttural and deep. And it came right at them. It was directed right at them. The roar knew where they were, who they were and how they were.
They came with bravery in number and arrogance in united strength. But it was hard because the body had no mind. It couldn't help but react to the powerful roar.
"Welcome to the Serengeti," the hyena said. Strangely, she found solace in the roar she used to run from.
"Here, you are no king," she said.
Sumu lashed out and bit her on the head. He clamped down, destroying nearly half of her skull and killing her instantly.
But the roar continued.
It was long, winding, and getting closer.
Sumu responded to the roar with one of his own. His jaw was red from the life he just took and he released the biggest roar he had ever made.
But still, his voice failed in comparison.
Hearing that, the other lions also roared out into the sky. For a moment, they acted bravely together. And soon, they did not need to act.
Because the combined sound of ten roars was more powerful than a single one.
"Let's go," Sumu said and they began making their way towards the roar, while still responding to it.
Less than ten minutes passed and they could smell the scent of the king.
Since both parties were heading towards each other, they met quickly.
"There," one of the lions said, and the whole party fell into a pause.
They watched as the massive beast stood out among the tall grass. Contrary to their expectations, there was not a single fear in his steps as he walked towards them.
They thought the greatest challenge they would face was hunting down the king. No sane creature would like to face ten lions. They thought he would run, hide even, and try to whittle down their numbers with the intelligence Scarface talked about.
But they saw no tricks.
Just a king that was ready to square up with ten of them.
It was odd really. He was only one, but he walked with more certainty than ten of them.
They bared their teeth, stretching low. The combined vibration of their growls was enough to send a warning in the form of a small earthquake.
Big, too big.
The growing king was bigger than anyone could imagine. He was bigger than the stories said. It was one of those rare moments where stories weren't exaggerated but underwhelming in the face of the real thing.
"The hyenas are back," one of the lions commented, prompting everyone to look around.
Indeed, there were few hyenas that came. But their numbers weren't even a dozen. They would mean nothing in the upcoming fight.
"Do you think his vultures can attack?" another one asked, prompting to look at the sky that was filled more and more by the vultures.
"We ought to be careful," said another voice.
"Yes, since we just fought, we are not in top condition."
Sumu bit down on his teeth, rage filling him.
Excuses.
They were all subconsciously looking for excuses. There was ten of them but all were bracing for defeat and looking for reasons to make a retreat for now.
But it was too late now.
At last, the king came out into their view. His body was no longer obstructed by distance nor the grasses. There, they could see the enemy in full.
Leo stopped moving forward and instead turned sideways and began circling them like prey. He was showing them what they were up against while at the same time, studying his enemies.
Shoulder muscles thicker than any lion should have, with a length that was nearly two times than of a prime lion. His frame was filled with so much mass that you only ever saw it on three of the biggest beasts on the land.
And a mane so black it seemed to swallow light when they fell on it.
The scent alone was powerful. They could smell the countless females he had been with in the past few days on him.
"Ten lions," Leo spoke, his voice deep. His two eyes felt like they were able to stare at all of them at once.
"I thought there were ten lions," he said, moving back and forth.
Then he stopped, "I see none,"
The lions bared their teeth, their growling intensified.
"More of that? I thought you came to attack," Leo asked, standing tall in a way that showed his vulnerable parts.
It was a prideful pose that showed he knew they would do nothing.
"Attack," he dared.
No one moved.
Silence.
Then finally, Leo released a growl and burst into action.
"Then get off my land!!"
A living tank, a lion bear, a predator that killed more predators than prey.
The confidence, the pride, the aggression were all unmatched.
Even after Leo charged towards them, the lions panicked and did not make an instant move. He's not going for me, right? There are ten of us. He must have picked someone else to attack.
That line of thought froze everyone until it was too late.
Sumu reacted first because he was on the front line.
And then the two lions clashed.
Or not.
Leo had been gathering too much momentum. He was too much bigger, so much more powerful, that when they clashed, it felt more like charging at a bull than a fellow lion.
He slammed into Sumu. The lion had lunged but he was shoved away in the air and ragdolled into the ground.
There was not even a follow attack as Leo simply continued to charge through the group.
Another lion who thought he wasn't the first target panicked. He reacted in a mix of running and charging. Leo clashed with him, his teeth snapping to draw a small wound before his momentum pushed him on the ground.
But Leo ran again.
The lions in the back who thought they weren't the target panicked once more.
In the end, Leo easily ran through the group. And much to their shame, the lions almost seemed to make a path for him. No one wanted to be the first victim.
Leo came to a stop on the other side again, laughing hard.
He turned to them, "What a bunch of jokes you are,"
Lions were prideful creatures.
But still. no one stepped forward.
At this point, the group missed their other half.
"What else did I expect? I remember some of you," Leo said, "I remember you running away to save your life,"
Strength in number.
Strength in number.
There were ten of them, there was one of him.
Now everyone was thinking there's a reason for that.
Weak, they were weaker.
Lions cannot have function as a group. They did not have that pack mentality. Even now, the reason why they hesitated so much was that everyone was thinking of themselves.
This was the problem that Scarface knew beforehand. There was not even a brotherhood amongst them. Their brothers already died at Leo's hands.
They were just a bunch of losers bound by anger and vengeance.
It was Leo who made the move again, he charged towards them, quickly gaining momentum. His acceleration was simply off the charts.
And this time, he slammed into a lion. His giant teeth clashed with the lion's jaw, as if he was willing to see whose teeth break first.
The thudding of flesh on flesh could be heard, and then the sound of broken bones as Leo's massive weight was a weapon when the opponent was on the ground.
Leo didn't run through this time, he ran into the lion.
Finally, when he was focused on one victim, the lions were brave enough to launch an attack.
