CHAPTER 331: Battle
CHAPTER 331: Battle
Sadly the enemy did not simply surrender, or run away. They did not try to deny anything either, they simply drew their weapons. Garm was the first to respond and pounced at their leader. While the man went down I did not hear any screaming, so he was likely still in the fight.
The goblins at the gate tried to attack but they were torn apart by blades of wind. We were dealing with at least one mage! Thankfully I had been prepared and my shield went up before something impacted it.
An explosion at the left wall drew my attention next.
"It was not me!" Cassie shouted, then started cursing when she tried to grab something from a pocket that was not there. We wore dresses and were not prepared for combat. Well, we had magic.
Skadi's runes lit up as she faced the hole in the fence. Three rock golems charged through the opening. They looked like bulky humanoids with bodies made from granite. Damn, they did not have any blood for Skadi to use but at least she still had her own. She kicked away her shoes, they were not made for combat, and charged while forming blood armour around her fists. As she got closer I could see glowing eyes inside the nearby bushes.
Just as Skadi reached the golems the cats pounced from the rear. Nyx grew in flight and tackled one of the intruders while Kasai and Yoru landed on top of the second one. Ivy went for the same opponent as Skadi and stuck her claws into its head.
Meanwhile at the main gate Frank covered himself in ice and fought a false guard with his sword. Kaito's hands were covered in frostfire as he blocked an incoming wind blade. Garm was suddenly thrown into the air and the enemy commander stood up again. His face looked like grey stone, so he was an earth mage.
Just as he stood up he was hit with a spear of ice. The force knocked him down again and the ground beneath him began to freeze, to keep him in place. I had focused on defence so far and debated how I could attack. It was frustrating to hide behind a shield but I had to admit that all my undead depended on me and my survival.
"How dare you attack us! I will show you the strength of a true necromancer!" Leo shouted as he left the mansion. Most guests stayed inside, which was good. I had no idea who of them was capable of fighting.
Leo's armoured skeleton drew a giant sword and took two steps forwards, before it was hit by a blade of light. Out of nowhere a new enemy appeared. The man looked human and wore a light leather armour. The sun had already set and his long white hair seemed to almost glow in the dark.
"Die, necromancer." He stated, then he tried to stab Leo as the skeleton crumbled into dust. Bob tackled Leo and took a hit to his back, which immediately started to smoke. This light blade did not seem healthy for undead. Bob did not get backup but I had no time to contemplate the damage to my undead.
The good news was, the man did not press his attack against Leo, the bad news was he spotted me, and moved. I put a shield of ice, covered in necrotic water, in front of me. It cracked but it held.
Then he jumped back as a claw of blood slashed at him. Hatsumi's eyes blazed with hatred as her runes lit up. Apparently she took attacks against me personally, and she was fast. Her blood claws hissed as she struck the blade of light, but they held.

"Impossible! Your foul magic cannot withstand the light!" The man insisted.
Hatsumi was quick, but so was the enemy mage. I did not know how to help without hitting her and I had to ensure I did not give him an opening. Hatsumi briefly paused and touched her runes, then she attacked again, faster.
I was briefly distracted by a piece of rock landing near me and noticed that Nyx had crushed her golem. Skadi's fists had shattered the leg of her opponent while Yoru and Kasai were slowly dismantling the third one.
"Be cleansed you unholy abomination!" The light mage shouted as glowing chains burst from the ground and caught Hatsumi's legs. As she was briefly stopped he struck and pierced her chest with his sword.
"NO!" I shouted as the man grinned triumphantly.
Garm looked at the scene and howled in rage.
Hatsumi… Hatsumi grabbed the man, as he was now close and his sword was stuck inside her. The runes around her neck lit up as her fangs pierced his throat. I could see a look of utter disbelief as the man's blood was slowly drained. The sword, which seemed to be made purely from light, slowly faded into nothingness, just like his life.
The light mage had been quite distracting but the battle had not stopped. Garm's right head unleashed a cloud of pure darkness at the attackers. His eyes were blazing with fury as the enemy screamed. I could not see anything inside the cloud, but I could feel death. I did what I did best, necromancy. As Garm's attack finished the cloud dispersed and only skeletons remained. My skeletons.
With that the battle was almost over.
"I surrender!" A woman shouted. She was on the ground and her legs were covered in frostfire, she must have been the wind mage Kaito was fighting. The only opponent left was the earth mage, who had pretended to be the lead guard.
Helena had been busy freezing him but the cold did little damage. It had prevented him from moving a lot though, as he was mostly battling her ice. He looked around the field and grimaced. He opened his mouth…
"Bawk."
The sound did not come from him, it came from his legs. There, an Iron Beak stood. Then it exploded.
"Ha, I knew Iron Beaks were a great addition to the carriage!" Cassie said.
The earth mage fell to the ground, I had no idea if he was still alive. While others went to secure him I rushed towards Hatsumi.
"Are you ok?!?" I shouted. I wanted to hug her but I was afraid of hurting her.
"I seem to have damaged another outfit, my apologies Mistress." She replied.
Ok, that was it. I did hug her and made sure to squeeze, just a little.
"I am fine, his light magic was not as powerful as he thought. Or perhaps he did not expect a bite enhanced by spellblade runes?" She mused. "The blood helped me heal, I wonder if the blood of a light mage helps with wounds caused by light magic?"
I stopped my hug and took a step back, inspecting her wound. It was healed, at least it looked like it. "Hm. It did so much damage to other undead. Bob…" I frowned. "I think Bob has been destroyed!"
Something twitched on the ground. The body Hatsumi had dropped was still moving! No - it was moving again.
"I have a new Bob." Hatsumi announced, as the former mage rose. "Apologies, I should have preserved the corpse but I am not used to my improved fangs."
"It's fine! As long as you are ok." I said.
"Seeing you being stabbed was quite concerning." Garm said as he trotted over to us. "You are a vital part of the pack."
"Meow!" The cats agreed. It seemed that everyone was now gathering around us.
Kaito was carrying a woman trapped in ice. "I am getting better at apprehending people." He mused.
"The earth mage is still breathing." Helena announced. "Valeria's guards are currently tying him up."
"My dress is a total loss." Skadi stated.
She was not wrong. The once beautiful a-line dress had several holes, and while it still protected her modesty, it was not in great shape. Cassie immediately inspected her girlfriend, who kept assuring her that she was fine.
I looked at Helena. "I was not hurt this time."
She grinned and patted me on the head. "Good, keep it that way."
"Luckily Garm saw through their deception. If we had followed them to the guard station they would have likely tried to kill us on the way." Kaito said.
"What happened?"
We all looked at the door, where a wide eyed Valeria stood and looked at the aftermath of our fight.
