Kitsune of the Blue Sun

Chapter 225- Confront?

Chapter 225- Confront?

[Keeno POV]

Seeing the terror on Kay’s face I immediately took action. I silently conjured blue flaming spears in the air around the area we were at. At the same time I stood up while in the same motion hiding Kay behind me. I felt her clench one of my tails tightly as I faced our ambushers.

In the light of my flames stood about a dozen Death spirits. They knelt once I turned around the flames trailing from their eyes dimming slightly as my own intensified. The one in the lead looked up at me, reverence coating her voice.

“Oh goddess ours, we greet you.  Our kindred have spread the news of your mission and we humbly present ourselves for you use.”

I felt Kay’s grip tighten on my tail.  I recalled hearing her say there were scary women in this country, and assumed she meant there were a few people who treated her and Rafaela badly, but now I saw I was mistaken. She clearly meant Death Spirits. I remained silent as I looked at them before pointing at the one who had taken charge.

“You stay, the rest of you leave. You’re scaring Kay.”

Without a word, all but one of the spirits melted into the shadows cast by my flames. Kay peeked around me and, seeing only one death spirit, relaxed her grip, though not completely. The death spirit looked quizzically at Kay, her head tilting to one side, the wolf-like ears on her head slightly flopping with the motion.

“Kay, I won’t let her hurt you.”

“Mm.”

She stopped gripping my tail and just used it as a hug pillow after my reassurance. Nodding slightly. I turned my attention back to the death spirit and she smiled that seductive smile all death spirits had.

“I assume there is more to this than just a greeting?” I said, my tone making the question sound more like a statement. “If so, then speak. My little companion here is tired and I’d rather her be spared from nightmares.”

The spirit nodded before speaking.

“Tonight was truly just a greeting. Though I have remembered something of importance. Due to your lineage, oh goddess mine, some of the denizens here may show undue aggression. Due to the specifics of how some magi use magic, you need not worry, any Warlock who dares strike at you shall find their Patronage…dealt with.”

Leaving it at that, the spirit vanished like smoke, leaving Kay and I alone again.  Kay, seeing that, moved in front of me and buried her face in my chest while hugging me. She seemed so much smaller than she usually did. I hugged her back with one arm while patting her head with the free hand until she calmed down.

“Keeno…you know the scary ladies?”

“I’m more like their boss, and I don’t know all of them. Why do you call them scary?”

“Because they sometimes ask me to go with them. But if I do that then Rafie will be alone and I don’t want Rafie to be alone.”

I hugged Kay tighter as I thought over her words.  She hugged back, still trembling slightly. It was then that I had an idea, though I don’t know if it was one caused from my emotional instability or something else, but I needed to see what Kay thought.

“Kay, I have an idea, but I need to know if you are ok with it.”

She looked up at me with a quizzical look.

“I can make it so those spirits won’t ask you that again. You’ll be able to be with Rafaela forever, but you’ll also have to do a job. Are you ok with that?”

“Uh huh. If I get to be with Rafie forever, then I’ll do anything!”

I smiled, hoping this would work out well in the long run, and started to pour a small amount of Divinity into Kay. Her body shone lightly for a second and I watched as the cracks in her soul mended, making the whitish-gray orb whole again and covering it in a goldfish tint.

“Ugh.” Kay made a sound as her face scrunched. “My chest feels tingly.”

“Hehe. It’ll go away soon.”

I started patting her head again, feeling the connection between us fully establish itself.  Kay, on her end, started nodding off.

“*yawn*Kay…feels sleepy.”

I smiled again at her and stood up, holding her in a princess carry.

“Sleep, Kay.”

“Mmkay.”

As her breathing became quiet, I carried her back to her home and laid her down next to Rafaela. I covered her in her discarded cloak and sat down in the corner I chose earlier that night. I looked over at the opposite corner and saw Pram looming over at me with a worried look.  Shaking my head horizontally she nodded and snuggled closer to Freya. I closed my eyes again as well and slowly fell asleep once more.
