Chapter 390 - 389: Cutting Through Steel

Chapter 390 - 389: Cutting Through Steel

A shocking scene unfolded.

Mazuru’s blazing saber light didn’t just block Bazz-B’s massive Pyroblast—it devoured it. The arc of crimson light sliced through the torrent of fire, splitting the explosion apart before a dense mist of blood-energy poured outward, swallowing what remained of the flame.

The inferno vanished as if erased from reality.

Then, silence.

Only the oppressive heat hanging in the air testified that a collision of monstrous power had just taken place.

Bazz-B stood beside Askin, his sharp eyes fixed on Mazuru. The corners of his mouth curved upward, equal parts awe and excitement.

"As expected of the man who defeated Yamamoto Genryūsai." he said openly, voice brimming with battlelust. "You really are something else!"

Bazz-B’s Schrift—his Schrift—was "H", for "The Heat". His very soul revolved around flames. Ever since the day he’d learned the name "Ryūjin Jakka", the strongest and oldest Zanpakutō of fire, he had dreamed of facing its wielder, Yamamoto Genryūsai.

But when the Wandenreich invaded the Soul Society in the story, he’d never been given the chance. Yhwach had fought Yamamoto himself.

(TL Note: Actually, he did get a chance, one of the three idiots who jumped Yamamoto during his battle against Yhwach was Bazz-B.. and he got what he deserved)

Yet standing before him now was a man said to have defeated that very Captain-Commander.

’If I can burn him’, Bazz-B thought, his blood thrumming, ’then I’ve surpassed Yamamoto himself... and maybe even Yhwach.’

Askin, however, had no time for such thoughts.

He was already seething with humiliation—and seeing Bazz-B rush in to steal his fight made his fury explode anew.

"Bazz-B! He’s my opponent! Get out of the way!"

Bazz-B didn’t even glance at him. His eyes never left Mazuru. "You’ve already lost your domain, Askin. Maybe watch from the sidelines."

Before Askin could reply, another voice cut through the air—cold, disdainful.

"You’re not qualified to talk about opponents." Cang Du said flatly. "The man who got forced out of his own Vollständig doesn’t get to choose who fights."

Askin’s face twisted. "Cang Du, you bastard—!"

Cang Du ignored him. His contempt was plain.

Ever since Askin had dragged them all into the Gift Bereich, nearly killing allies and enemies alike, Cang Du’s respect for him had evaporated. Watching him flail helplessly against Mazuru only deepened that disgust.

To Cang Du, Askin was a failure of science and arrogance.

To think this poison-dealer was one of Yhwach’s elite royal guards... it was almost insulting.

In his mind, Haschwalth was too passive, Askin too unreliable. The so-called "personal guards" were nothing but pampered scholars wearing crowns they didn’t earn.

Cang Du’s glare was ice. "If you don’t like it, fight me." his eyes said.

He wasn’t afraid. Without the Gift Bereich, Askin’s attacks—light arrows, toxins, tricks—meant nothing against his Iron. Even the light spears of reishi couldn’t pierce his defense.

From the edge of the field, Mazuru watched them bicker, a faint smile forming on his lips.

"Internal strife?" he murmured. "How convenient."

For him, this was perfect. Let them fight among themselves. Let Sternritters turn their blades inward.

But, in the end, Askin restrained himself. He understood what was at stake.

If he fought Cang Du or Bazz-B now, the only winner would be Mazuru. And that, he could not allow.

He exhaled sharply and backed away, fists trembling. "Fine. You want him? Go ahead. Die together for all I care."

Bazz-B and Cang Du exchanged a brief glance, neither backing down.

Bazz-B smirked. "So, you’re joining in too, huh?"

Cang Du’s eyes gleamed. "I won’t miss the chance to test myself against the King of Hueco Mundo."

"Hmph." Bazz-B cracked his knuckles. "Then let’s see which of us gets burned first."

No more words were needed.

Bazz-B’s flames ignited, forming a glowing orb of heat between his palms. With a flick of his wrist, the fireball streaked toward Mazuru like a meteor.

*Whoosh!*

Mazuru swung his saber casually. A flash of crimson light erupted—the Blazing Slash—and the flames disintegrated into glowing embers before touching him.

He sighed softly. "I’m flattered that you’re fighting over me, truly. But," his smile turned faintly sardonic, "considering you’re both men, and not even good-looking ones, I find it rather irritating."

His tone sharpened. "So, I’ll just knock you both down."

*Shhh!*

In the blink of an eye, he vanished.

None of the quincy could track his movement—not even with their heightened perception.

Just as no one had noticed how he entered Askin’s domain earlier, no one saw him move now.

The first to feel it was Cang Du.

A flash of red appeared in front of him—the arc of a blade descending from above. Mazuru’s saber cut through the air with impossible speed.

Cang Du didn’t panic. He raised his arm to meet it, smirking coldly. His body shimmered, transforming as his Schrift activated.

"The Iron." he said.

His skin turned metallic; his body became harder than forged iron. Grimmjow’s claws had barely scratched him before—why should a shinigami’s sword be any different?

*Clang!*

Mazuru’s saber struck his body. Sparks scattered. For an instant, Cang Du was smug enough to open his mouth to taunt him.

But then—

*Crack. Crack. Crack.*

The sound was small, sharp, and wrong.

Cang Du’s eyes widened. The metallic surface of his arm rippled... then split apart. The vibrations spread, slicing through his form in an instant as Mazuru’s Reiatsu detonated.

The saber pulsed once—an explosion of spiritual power magnified hundreds, thousands of times within a single cut.

It was not one strike. It was thousands layered into one.

"AHHHHH!!"

Cang Du’s scream tore through the air as his right arm exploded in a burst of blood and reishi shards. The shockwave sent sand flying in all directions.

He staggered backward, staring in disbelief at the empty space where his arm had been.

Mazuru lowered his blade, his expression unreadable.

"The power of steel." he said quietly. "That’s all it amounts to. Haven’t you heard?"

He stepped forward, his eyes calm and cold. "Even the greatest swordsmen are defined by one thing—whether their blades can cut through steel."

He tilted his head slightly. "You should’ve known better."

Cang Du’s entire body trembled. The pain was overwhelming—raw, unfamiliar. Since gaining the Schrift of Iron, he had barely bled, let alone lost a limb. To be cut, to hurt, was a concept long forgotten.

Bazz-B stared, momentarily stunned. Then his teeth clenched, fury boiling in his veins.

"Damn you..." he hissed. "You really think I’m going to stand here and watch?"
