Chapter 320: Thirst for Revenge, Injection

Chapter 320: Thirst for Revenge, Injection

The moment that Peter said those words, Kate immediately understood that her suspicions were right. An injection for a serum, she had heard some of her colleagues back at the station when she was in Drenn city mentioning something like this.

They were discussing a certain science fiction movie, in which, several characters were taken to a laboratory, where they would be injected with different types of serums, to test out the effects of the serums.

In the end, most of the people that were injected with the serums ended up dying, while those that survived, some of them managed to gain abilities that were beyond human capabilities.

This, added to what Michael had asked her a few days ago, she came to a conclusion, the next segment was definitely about gaining superpowers.

Since Michael had asked her about this, it was clear that he already knew about this. Therefore, Kate was much more relieved.

She gazed at Lina, who was standing next to her, only to realize that Lina was as nonchalant as before. This girl, it was as if she never worried about anything.

Still, Kate just hoped that this was not an experiment being carried out on them. Otherwise, the death rates would definitely be high, higher than what was revealed previously.

"Okay, all of you, get inside, and you will be guided on where to go to. Make sure to behave yourselves, because if you end up destroying something inside there, you will be held accountable." As he calmed down slightly, Peter said as he gazed at the group with anticipation in his eyes.

Actually, at the moment, the situation was getting out of control. Therefore, there was a lot of pressure on NEXUS.

At the moment, the number of personnel available to handle the many issues that had arose, was insufficient.

That was why they needed to inject more members into the organization. But of course, it was impossible to just have anyone join NEXUS.

Only those that passed the assessment would be allowed to join. As for those that had been eliminated, while it was a pity, considering that the larger the number of people who underwent the serum injection, the higher the number of survivors, there was no any other option.

At least, for those that were currently remaining, while others had changed their minds, it was their own decision. At least, they would not completely blame the organization, as they had been given the chance to make a choice.

Now, Peter was just looking forward to those that would manage to survive out of the 9. If someone managed to gain an ability that was overpowered, it would help them in quite a number of ways.

Still, he had no any intention of going inside the infirmary to observe. Instead, since there was a lot of work, he needed to go and deal with it.

He would only wait for the reports to arrive, informing him of the number of people that had survived, and what kind of abilities they had managed to awaken.

Kate and the rest of the recruits did not know what Peter was thinking about. So, they just entered into the infirmary, before they were led towards a section of the infirmary.

The infirmary building itself was quite big, obviously bigger than some hospitals. But here in the training camp, it was referred to as an infirmary.

After walking down several corridors, they finally went through controlled access doors that opened only after clearance.

Inside, the space was bright and sterile, lit by overhead panels that cast a white light across polished floors and smooth metal surfaces.

Reclined medical chairs sat in a row, each surrounded by compact monitoring units that were used to track heart rate, neural activity, and blood response in real time.

Transparent cylinders lined one wall, filled with stabilized compounds, their contents suspended, each labeled with coded identifiers.

Thin tubing, sealed containers, and injection modules were organized on stainless steel trays, everything placed within reach.

The air carried a faint antiseptic scent, sharp but controlled.

Beyond this section, partitioned sections held more advanced equipment; enclosed observation pods with reinforced glass, surgical tables under focused lighting, and diagnostic systems that scanned and displayed internal changes as they occurred.

Some compartments were empty. Others remained closed, their interiors obscured.

This was the first time that most of the recruits had entered the infirmary. Even Evan, who had been here the previous day, he had not accessed this section.

While he was amazed by the equipment here, he was much more calm as compared to the others around. Previously, before he joined the recruitment camp, his brother had given him some information.

While his brother had not explicitly explained anything, but the hints that he had given, and the fact that he was willing to use all the merit points that he had accumulated until now, to allow Evan to come back to the training camp, his message was clear.

Moreover, when he was badly injured by Lina, he was brought into the infirmary, where he was healed. While he was not sure how he had been healed, considering that he was unconscious the entire time, he was sure that this was not normal.

That was especially after knowing that it had been less than a day, just a few hours, before all the injuries that he had suffered were completely healed.

So, he gazed at the other recruits around, taking in their expressions, before feeling smug. But when he gazed at Kate and Lina, while Kate seemed to be a little surprised, Lina seemed indifferent.

This irritated Evan quite a bit, but when Lina looked over, he immediately shifted his gaze somewhere else. At the same time, in his heart, he thought, as long as he could succeed, he would definitely make sure to make them pay the debt that they owed him.

The injuries that he had suffered, the humiliation, and the scolding that he would receive from his brother, all of this, they had to take responsibility for.

"That guy, the way that he is looking at us, it is as if he wants to shred us into pieces. From the way that I see him, it is clear that if there is a chance, he will definitely use it to deal with us." Lina whispered to Kate.

Kate looked at Evan, before she completely ignored him. She understood that what Lina had said was true, but before that, he would have to survive first, to even think about taking revenge on them.

And even if he survived, there was no guarantee that he would be able to get a good ability, or he might not get one at all.

So, as long as she and Kate managed to gain good abilities, it would allow them to be able to deal with whatever came later on.

Just as everyone was having their own thoughts and reaction to what they were seeing, the medical staff who had led them here nodded at a colleague who was wearing a white lab coat, who immediately gazed at the recruits.

He stood waiting near the row of reclined chairs, tablet in hand, his expression indifferent. As the doors sealed behind the other staff who had led the recruits here with a soft click, he spoke up.

"Line up," he said. "You’ll all be assigned stations. Follow instructions exactly."

Kate stepped forward with the others, each person heading towards a section that they were pointed towards. Stopping beside one of the chairs, Kate touched it, feeling that the surface was cold.

Following the instructions, she, together with the other recruits, all sat. The staff member moved along the line, checking names against coded identifiers.

"Grade A serum," he said, voice even. "Injection is direct. You will remain conscious. Do not resist the response. If you lose control, the system will compensate."

After a pause, he continued, "The fatality rate is forty-two percent. There is quite a high chance that you will survive, so there is no need to tense, just relax."

Despite his words, nobody responded, as they were thinking about other things. They understood, this was a matter of life and death.

At this moment, the doors of the room that they were currently in suddenly opened, as a group of men and women, dressed in military attire, carrying guns, stepped into the room.

Even though they had seen armed soldiers around the training camp, who were mostly in charge of security and preventing the recruits from sneaking out of the training camp, most of the recruits felt nervous.

The leader of the group that had just entered the room noticed this, before he said, "There is no need to worry, this is just the protocol that we are following. During any serum injection session, it is required for a group of soldiers to be available.

This is not only to deal with unexpected circumstances, but it is also to ensure your safety. After all, we cannot be too sure that something might not go wrong during the process."

His words relieved quite a number of people, but still, the recruits finally understood how serious this thing was. It was no wonder they were told that it was a matter of life and death.

While some of them began regretting the decision that they had made, others maintained their resolve. Since there was nothing that they could change, they would just go with the flow.

"Lie back." The medical staff ignored their reactions as he instructed.

Kate did, and so did the others. The restraint bands secured over her wrists and forearms with a quiet lock. A monitor activated beside her, lines flickering to life. Heart rate, neural activity, blood pressure, all of them were indicated on the screen of the monitor.

Several technicians stepped into the room, with gloved hands. One headed for Kate, where he connected a thin line from a sealed vial to the injection module, to her arm.

"Injection will begin on mark," the staff member said. "Three. Two. One."
