Chapter 82: Time Before The Siege
Chapter 82: Time Before The Siege
After his passionate time with Ayame and a moment of rest, there was already less than an hour left before the siege.
Damon hadn’t noticed the time at first, so when he did, he sprang to his feet and began to quickly get dressed.
He was ready to leave within a few moments, leaving toward the door to go fetch his group.
"Don’t take too long... I’ll be waiting~" Ayame’s voice called after him as he left.
During the walk to the first member of his group, Damon was lost in thought, recalling what had just happened between him and Ayame.
It wasn’t until he arrived at a small wooden door that he snapped out of that pleasant daze and shook his head back into focus.
*Knock!* *Knock!*
There was a moment of silence before the door suddenly swung open. There wasn’t even the faintest sound of footsteps, as if the person behind it was already waiting behind the door.
"Elias," Damon nodded in a greeting, and the middle-aged man returned the gesture. "You ready?"
"Yes. How about yourself? Did you do everything you needed to?"
Damon’s mind trailed for a moment to his time with Ayame before he shook the thought away. "Yeah, I’ve done what I needed to do."
The two of them moved swiftly along the makeshift corridor before they arrived at another door a minute later.
This time, Elias was the one to knock, and when he did, they immediately heard a sound of footsteps rushing across the wooden floor before it swung open to reveal Nyla.
"Boss!" she exclaimed enthusiastically, before noticing Elias a moment later, and a faint frown tugged at her features, as if she was hoping he’d come alone.
The three of them exchanged a small greeting before they all went for the next person, or rather, duo.
"...they live next to one another, so it’s going to be less of a hustle..." Just as Elias finished explaining how going to fetch the twins next was going to be a better idea since they live next to one another, Damon felt a sudden new presence beside them and stopped midstep.
He turned to see Amber walking beside them. The girl didn’t even greet them as she simply appeared out of nowhere and began walking with them as if that was the most normal thing.
"Huh?!" Nyla jumped from the sudden surprise. "Amber, what are you doing here?"
Amber, however, simply tilted her head as if the question made no sense to her. "We’re going to fetch the twins, aren’t we?" she asked in a voice so low it could pass as a whisper.
’She gets weirder by the day,’ Damon thought before turning away and continuing to follow Elias’ lead toward the twins.
And soon enough, they arrived.
They only had to knock on the first door for the two neighbouring doors to open up, and both twins greeted them with a synced ’hi’. Their voices overlapped with perfect timing, just as their looks were complete mirrors of one another.
Damon lingered for a moment, thinking that he still didn’t know which twin was which, but before he could dwell on it any longer, everyone else began to exchange quick greetings, and with them, their group was back in full.
"Where off to now, boss?" Nyla asked.
"Let’s head outside, it’s too crowded in here."
With all the newcomers, it was now hard to walk without brushing against or even bumping into other people. Most of them didn’t have rooms, so they used sleeping bags scattered around the floors to sleep, making the main area of the central station extremely crowded.
When the group climbed the final stair leading out of the station, they were surprised to see that they weren’t the only ones to be early for the departure.
The first familiar face that came into view was Victor.
He stood confidently at the forefront of his group. It was surprising to see him act like an actual leader. Damon could still remember his panicked expression at the sight of a Level 1 Undead Human. The change was truly remarkable.
His group looked decently armoured, standing with confidence behind their leader.
A few meters to their left stood Torren, along with his group.
Damon exchanged a firm nod with Torren before turning toward Victor, who was already approaching him.
"You’re here early," Damon said.
"Yeah... my group was growing restless, so we decided to get some air. What about you?"
"Same."
Damon frowned slightly as he took another glance at Torren’s group, realising someone was clearly missing.
And as if right on cue, a voice called out from behind.
"Daaamon."
Damon turned slowly, already knowing who he’d see.
Eve approached at her usual measured pace, eyes fixed on him as if the rest of the world barely existed. But this time, Damon didn’t move to meet her halfway. He stayed where he was, his group naturally forming around him.
Before she could get close, Nyla stepped forward, cutting her off.
"You know this woman, boss?" she asked, her gaze narrowed on Eve, who stared at her with a perplexed expression.
"Unfortunately, yes," he paused for a moment before continuing. "She will join our group during the siege.
"WHAT?" Nyla’s head snapped back toward him.
Eve’s lips curved into a victorious smile as she believed she had convinced him into doing whatever she wanted, but the truth was very different.
Damon knew her coy personality well, and he couldn’t afford to let her out of his sight during the siege in case she wanted to try something.
If it were him from just weeks ago, keeping an eye on her while leading the siege would’ve been impossible, but with the Black Knight by his side, he was certain the Level 60 monster could kill her without her knowing what happened.
’If she as much as twitches the wrong way, I want you to kill her.’ Damon sent an internal command to his summon.
