Chapter 79: Blade of Midnight
Chapter 79: Blade of Midnight
Damon spent the next ten hours simply sleeping. His body, but most importantly his mind, needed a proper sleep for a long time, and now knowing what they were about to do, he obliged.
He woke up to a sudden weight on his chest, one that he had experienced before, so when his eyes fluttered open, he wasn’t surprised to see what it was.
Kitsune.
Now in her true form, she lay on top of him, her ruby eyes watching his face from a little too close of a distance.
"Morning~" Her voice purred in his ear.
The warmth of her body pressed softly against his.
Damon blinked, his mind still foggy with sleep. "..How long have you been watching me sleep?"
"Oh, not long," she replied with an innocent smile that was anything but innocent. "Only for a little while."
"So I take it you’re done refining mana?"
"Mhmm," she purred in reply, her body rubbing slightly against his as she shifted closer, if that was even possible, toward him.
"So, how long are you gonna stay on top of him?"
"Hmm? Acting like you haven’t missed seeing me?" Her lips leaned closer toward him, almost brushing against his ear as she whispered. "Your stamina had grown quite a bit... maybe we should put it to good use~"
Damon’s breath caught for a moment as he realised what she meant, which only made her smile widen.
"The siege—" he began, but before he could finish his sentence, her finger pressed gently against his lips.
"Shh, my dear Damon..." She took a quick glance toward the old mechanical clock hanging on the wall before her gaze turned back to him. "It’s only ten. That means we have two hours all to ourselves."
"In that case," Damon suddenly spoke, his hands gripping her small waist, which caught her slightly off guard. Her ruby eyes lit up in anticipation as he spoke his next words. "...Can I borrow some of your mana?"
"Huh?" She blinked.
Then, before she could even react, he lifted her off himself and placed her alone on the bed as he stood up.
His initial plan was to simply rest before the siege, but now, with two hours left and feeling well rested, there was something else he wanted to do.
There was one thing that had lacked over the last few weeks, one that no matter how many monsters he killed, he couldn’t find a chance to replace.
His weapon.
He chose not to bother Nyla with making a new one, as the girl was already busy making relics not only for herself but also for the other group members.
Besides, Damon had already learned her class.
Suddenly, his arm lifted to an empty side of the room as he activated the furnace ability. In an instant, a medium-sized furnace materialised.
There was, however, one problem he learned about shortly after learning the girl’s class. He had only received two out of her three class abilities.
For reasons unknown to him, he simply couldn’t copy the hammer. He copied the furnace, he copied the ability to use his mana to weave relics, but the hammer itself was out of reach, as if unique only to the girl.
Luckily, for what he was about to do, there was no need for hammering the steel down.
Kitsune propped herself up on her knees as she watched, half annoyed at his sudden dismissal but also half intrigued by what he was doing. Her nightgown, the one that barely covered her hips, shifted as she moved.
Damon summoned his Jian sword and shoved it right into the furnace just as he activated his Absolute Comprehension to avoid making any errors.
While the blade was heating up, he summoned the rift shards he had specifically put aside for this task.
He lay three Large Rift Shards and two Medium ones on the floor beside him as he turned back to Kitsune. Watching Nyla Demon had a clear understanding of how she not only used the rift shards but also imbued her own mana into the relics. And so, whose mana was better suited than that of a divine being?
"You owe me," Kitsune said as she rose to her feet. Only now did Damon realise that she was wearing her nightgown, and found himself lost in thought for a second. Her tone softened immedietally when she realised his gaze, enjoying every second of it. "I will collect that debt."
The second her arms wrapped around him, Damon felt a surge of newfound energy, unmistakably her mana.
He pulled the sword out of the furnace with a precise, almost practised motion. The countless times he had observed this very movement weren’t for nothing, as he settled the rod-hot blade down and began to weave mana into it.
The darkness of Jian’s blade seemed to deepen with each second as the sword soaked in the new mana. The five shards were devoured within moments, and soon Damon began to channel Kitsune’s mana into the blade itself.
It took a couple more moments before the change of the weapon became clear, and a loud notification rang in his head.
[Your Relic has been enhanced!]
[Obsydian Jian -> Blade of Midnight]
[Stats: +20% Strength]
Damon’s eyes widened in a pleased surprise as he read the notifications.
Unlike the flat stat increase he had expected to see, this one was a percentage increase, meaning that as long as he continued the level up, the weapon would get stronger with him.
He quickly dismissed the furnace, the temperature in the room dropping almost instantly, and began to study the weapon.
Its form was a lot darker now. The edge gleamed with an otherworldly sharpness, and when he gave it an experimental swing, the air itself seemed scared to oppose its path.
"Now that’s a weapon worthy of a siege..." he murmured, more to himself than to anyone else.
But at his words, Kitsune suddenly spoke. "About the siege..."
Damon turned to see an unusual expression on her face. There was no dangerous smile or eyes of hidden intentions. Instead, there was something quiet, something vulnerable that Damon didn’t understand yet.
"I won’t be able to join you."
