Chapter 69
Chapter 69
69. Uninvited Guest
"This... what you're saying isn't impossible, but I still have to discuss it with my older sister. It only counts if she agrees."
Lilian was tempted, but she was still just a worker. She needed to consult her sister's opinion first.
"Of course. Let's add each other on QQ. If your sister is interested too, we can find a time to meet."
Meng Lian took out her phone and exchanged contacts with Lilian. By now the break period was almost over, so they bid each other farewell.
Returning to the classroom just as the bell rang, everyone settled back into their seats.
Meng Lian felt quite pleased with this unexpected windfall. After all, if she really got into the Student Council, she would have a chance to get close to that Chen Li. Maybe she could even figure out what had happened to the Alliance, why she had no contact person, and perhaps obtain the contact information of other undercover agents in the academy.
Thinking along these lines, Meng Lian's mood improved considerably, and her attention during class began to drift.
This period was Divination class. The teacher was a beautiful woman dressed in black robes named Busuan.
"Divination is primarily theoretical. You won't learn much advanced material in your first year. I don't usually assign homework either. As long as you pass the final exam, that's all I ask."
Divination was a course from the Fate faction. It had an extremely high ceiling but also a very low floor. Those who mastered it were incredibly formidable, while those who only knew the basics were no different from charlatans.
Busuan didn't cover anything profound in the first class, just some principles and history of divination. But seeing everyone below nodding off, she felt rather exasperated.
"Everyone, please try to stay alert. Even though this class is quite easy, you should at least pay a little attention."
Busuan knocked on the podium, but it had little effect. Yawns rippled through the classroom.
Busuan truly had a good temper. Seeing this scene, she didn't get angry. Instead, she pulled out a crystal ball and said mysteriously, "Since none of you are interested in the course material, and we're almost done with what I needed to cover anyway, how about I demonstrate the true charm of divination?"
Seeing that Busuan was about to actually perform something, the class perked up instantly. Busuan felt rather smug about this.
"Heh heh, let me show you a little something. Which student would like to come up and cooperate with me? I'll divine what will happen to you in the next few days."
"Of course, I can only glimpse a corner of the future. It's not particularly accurate, so don't take it too seriously."
After all, Busuan was only an Extraordinary Witch. To truly peek into someone's fate, one would likely need to be a Great Witch.
As for weaving fate itself, only a Sequence Witch, Fate (#6), could accomplish that.
Hearing this, many hands shot up in the class. Such a mystical thing, they all wanted to see it for themselves.
Busuan was dazzled by the response. She looked left and right, unsure who to pick, until she spotted Meng Lian scratching her head. Her eyes lit up.
Such a beautiful student. You're the one.
"This student here. Yes, the golden-haired one. You. Come up here."
Me?
I was just scratching my head!
Meng Lian looked bewildered, but under everyone's gaze, she had no choice but to walk up to Busuan.
"Place your hand on it. The crystal ball might not react at all, or it might show a scene. Don't feel any pressure. Divination results are infinitely variable and not necessarily correct."
Busuan reassured her from the side. Meng Lian placed her hand on the crystal ball.
The rest of the class craned their necks, eager to see what would appear in the crystal ball.
Busuan smiled slightly. On the back of Meng Lian's pale hand, she traced an intricate purple pattern. The pattern flashed by like a projection, then sank through Meng Lian's palm into the crystal ball. Instantly, the crystal ball erupted with blinding purple light, and a blurry image appeared within.
What was this?
Meng Lian removed her palm and stared at the scene in the crystal ball, entranced.
Inside the crystal ball, there was only a single image. She stood by a window, tears in the corners of her eyes, seemingly saddened by something.
Wait, why am I crying?
Meng Lian blinked in confusion.
From childhood to now, the only times she had cried were when her younger sister beat her up as a kid. Every other time, no matter how big the problem, she kept it buried in her heart and bore it silently. There was no way she would cry.
Seeing this scene, the students behind her began whispering among themselves.
"Strange, why is the Class Monitor crying? She looks like she got dumped. Looks so pitiful."
Excuse me? I don't even have a girlfriend. How could I get dumped? Besides, even if I really did get dumped, it would only mean the other person had no taste. Why would I cry?
"Maybe she's crying from happiness? Maybe the Class Monitor found a gorgeous girlfriend and is weeping with joy?"
Hmm, that might actually be possible. But would I really weep with joy?
"Can't tell. Just one image doesn't reveal anything. No location, no time. Who knows if the Class Monitor is crying from sadness or happiness? Garbage divination, not worth learning."
Exactly. Garbage divination, only giving one image. Divined absolutely nothing.
Meng Lian wholeheartedly agreed. Busuan heard these comments too, looking rather awkward.
This was the perennial problem with divination. Without reaching Great Witch level, you were ultimately just a charlatan. If she didn't need this to make a living, she would have packed up and left ages ago.
Did people really think she wanted to wear this black robe every day? It was just that their Fate faction required wearing black robes to appear mysterious. They claimed it was because fate cannot be peeked at, but really it was just because they were afraid people would remember their faces and come after them with blunt instruments.
"Don't take it to heart, student. Maybe you just woke up and yawned, and there happened to be tears in the corners of your eyes?"
After all, the image was truly blurry. Even those shady little ads were higher definition than it. You could only vaguely see tears in the corners of Meng Lian's eyes, as if she were crying. But the actual situation, no one could say for certain.
Busuan put away the crystal ball. Just then, the bell rang, and she fled the classroom as if her life depended on it.
Wait, they were the students. Why was she running?
Sigh, this damn occupational hazard.
Busuan used to do divination on the street to earn extra money, but people kept sneaking up and hitting her from behind. So after every reading, she would run incredibly fast, terrified that the next moment would bring a club to the back of her head.
But now she is in school. She was a teacher. Who would dare hit her?
Suddenly, Busuan's posture straightened, and she walked with much more swagger.
Meng Lian didn't take the matter to heart either. Or rather, no one in the class took it to heart. They had already mentally categorized Divination as a charlatan course. Besides, there was no homework, so they could just cram at the end of the term.
First year studies were dry and tedious. Finally, the school day came to an end.
"Haah. Finally done. I'm exhausted."
Meng Lian yawned and stretched. Just then, Jiang Jiang and Gabriel came looking for her.
Meng Lian walked out of the teaching building with Jiang Jiang, Gabriel, Phoeby, and Shen Ning, chatting and laughing. The sun was setting now, and its warm rays felt pleasant against their skin.
Gabriel had to go to Zhizhen's shop for her part-time job, so she left first. Phoeby also needed to head to the studio to update her manga, so she said goodbye too.
As for Jiang Jiang, she had been acting mysterious these past few days. She told Meng Lian that she had just joined a zombie club last night, and it was time for their club gathering, so she left as well.
A zombie club?
Meng Lian imagined it for a moment and couldn't help but chuckle.
Was this club very gloomy, completely devoid of positive energy?
Shen Ning's Witch House hadn't opened yet, but she still made an excuse to leave.
However, the direction Shen Ning headed wasn't toward the Witch House at all. Instead, it was toward the underground arena where Luoluo fought. Meng Lian saw this but chose not to comment. She simply smiled and walked toward the dormitory.
Sigh. Everyone was busy. Good for them.
But when she arrived at the door of Room 404, Meng Lian was surprised to see a pink-haired beauty standing there, seemingly waiting for quite some time.
"You're Meng Lian? Even prettier in person than in the photos!"
The pink-haired beauty's eyes lit up upon seeing Meng Lian. She lifted Meng Lian's smooth chin with her fingers, carefully examining her luscious red lips. Her pink heart-shaped pupils were filled with eager anticipation.
"Ten thousand credits, right? I'll pay twenty thousand. Sleep with me for one night. How about it?"
Huh?
