Chapter 62: Secrets in the Apostle Forum

Chapter 62: Secrets in the Apostle Forum

One hour later, Intelligence Division headquarters, third floor, Division Leader’s office.

There were only two people in the office, one man and one woman.

Lin Xun explained everything that had happened that night to his female superior in detail.

The black stocking lady, dressed in a fitted business suit, had a hint of reproach in her eyes. “Lin Xun, the Source of the Apocalypse is far less important than your life. If necessary, you should have handed it over. Your safety comes first… but forget it. You must have weighed the risks carefully and had a trump card, otherwise you wouldn’t have acted that way.”

“Just don’t ever do that again. If your so-called trump card hadn’t been enough to eliminate Talros, the consequences would’ve been unthinkable.”

Lin Xun nodded and manifested the Lower-Tier Seat Pass for the Disciple Sanctum, handing the card to Li Xingyue.

Li Xingyue took the card and sighed, “The operation was a bit reckless, but it turned out well. Tonight, you not only obtained a crucial item for infiltrating the enemy, but also eliminated a Disciple candidate from the New World on the spot.”

“A Disciple candidate?”

“Yes. Although this particular candidate was ranked low, he was still a decent catch.”

She knew the item Lin Xun had used to eliminate Talros was incredibly rare. Consuming such a valuable item during a mission meant the organization would certainly need to compensate him.Otherwise, once morale was damaged, managing the team would become difficult.

“With these two accomplishments plus the rare item you expended, I’ll submit a request to HQ for rewards and compensation.”

“I had originally arranged for Lu Caiyi to protect you, but in the end, you were the one who saved her. For a newly appointed Apostle, your growth rate is truly astounding.”

The black stocking lady was very pleased with his performance, praising him repeatedly.

Lin Xun recalled what Talros had said about the price of using the Source of the Apocalypse in reality, and he asked his superior if it was true.

Li Xingyue nodded. “Using the Source of the Apocalypse in the real world does come with a severe cost. Only enemy factions like the New World would risk doing so.”

“As for the real-world effects of the Source of the Apocalypse, that’s tied to highly classified information.”

“For you, it’s enough to complete the initial chapter and then solidify it into a Relic once you return to the library.”

Lin Xun didn’t press further. Information about the Source of the Apocalypse likely involved a higher access level, and it was normal that a new recruit like him couldn’t learn more.

In any case, the Engineer’s mission should now be finished. Once he cleared the initial chapter and solidified the Source of the Apocalypse into a Relic, the matter would no longer concern him.

“Don’t discard the Engineer Shell for now. The New World imprint on this Shell might still come in handy.”

Lin Xun nodded. He never planned on abandoning the Engineer Shell anyway. He had let the Paladin of Discipline bear the cost of using Dragon Breath precisely because he was worried the Engineer’s plug-in might temporarily fail.

Seeing that there was nothing else to discuss, Lin Xun left the office.

To his surprise, Ye Xiaoqi was waiting right outside the door.

“Lin Xun, you really earned major credit with this mission.”

“Normally, with so many of our Intelligence Division people in the office at once, you’d have to treat everyone to a meal. But I figured you must be exhausted tonight, so I turned them down on your behalf.”

The short-haired girl boldly slung an arm around his shoulder. Unfortunately, she wasn’t quite tall enough, so she patted him on the back instead.

“This lady here has decided to escort you, our big hero, home. Aren’t you going to thank me properly?”

The short-haired girl pulled him into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. A familiar citrus fragrance wafted from her side.

“…Shouldn’t I at least go to the second floor and say goodbye to them? Leaving like this feels a bit rude.”

They were coworkers after all, and they had carried out this late-night mission to rescue him. Not even saying goodbye seemed inconsiderate.

“No need, no need. They all understand. We’ll just head out.”

When the elevator reached the first floor and they exited the Intelligence Division building, Ye Xiaoqi pulled him into a small car and floored the gas pedal, heading straight for Lin Xun’s place.

Back home, Lin Xun logged into the Apostle Forum.

He searched for information related to the Source of the Apocalypse.

As expected, the search returned nothing but a blank screen.

His brow furrowed tightly. He was growing more suspicious of the Apostle Forum.

The Source of the Apocalypse was a type of item that could only be obtained by clearing a chapter and receiving an S-rank evaluation.

There was no reason the New World could obtain an S-rank evaluation while the Apostle Forum had no S-rank strategies at all.

He accessed the Intelligence Division permissions and carefully browsed the strategies available on the forum.

There were quite a few chapter-clearing guides, but most of them were D-rank, the lowest possible evaluation. Even C-rank guides were rare.

Many civilian Apostles were so weak they couldn’t even follow the guides. Due to their own levels, skills, or equipment, they failed to clear the chapters.

It was like watching a master’s no-damage boss fight on a stream. Even if you study it repeatedly, if you’re all thumbs, you’ll never replicate it.

As an official Apostle, Lin Xun knew the organization had many hidden talents. There were plenty of strong Apostles.

If the New World could achieve S-rank evaluations, then even if the official Apostles couldn’t, their guides wouldn’t be stuck at D and C.

Lin Xun narrowed his eyes. Based on everything, there was only one truth.

The Apostle Security Council was deliberately hiding high-rank strategies, preventing civilian and official Apostles from obtaining higher evaluations.

The likely reason for this was the Source of the Apocalypse.

Were they afraid of people obtaining the Source of the Apocalypse and recklessly using it in the real world?

Or was it that there were enemy moles within the organization, afraid of leaking strategy information?

Whatever the reason, this kind of practice would inevitably limit the strength growth of the organization’s Apostles.

Cutting off one’s own hands to weaken the enemy was clearly foolish. Besides, the enemy was still managing to achieve S-rank evaluations. This method hadn’t weakened them in the slightest.

Upon careful thought, Lin Xun realized that the Apostle Security Council must possess high-rank strategies. There were probably even higher-level military organizations behind the scenes.

Those top-level strategies were most likely circulated only among the organization’s core personnel.
