[You slowly descended to the ground, releasing the Hermit’s Descent dragon state and reverting to the form of a monster with a dragon’s head and human body.]
[Among the gathered yokai, apart from Shuten Doji, there were two or three other powerful ones. Though they were forced by the King of One Hundred Demons’ authority to kneel, as they bowed their heads they murmured among themselves…]
[“Could it be that Lord Shuten is mistaken? Statues of the Dragon God are everywhere, but this yokai doesn’t look like any Dragon God…”]
[“Yeah, this creature clearly looks like a mixed-blood spawn of a serpent yokai and a lizard yokai… No, maybe also a bat yokai, the wings on its back prove it.”]
[“…Tch, that bloodline is absurdly muddled. I’ve never heard of anything like it.”]
[“Perhaps Lord Shuten simply drank too much and saw wrong, should we remind him?”]
[“You fool, Lord Shuten’s tolerance is not something lesser yokai can question! Even if he did see wrong, we must cooperate and play along.”]
[“Ah, I understand! Listening to your wisdom, it’s as though the clouds have parted and my yokai life is suddenly filled with light…”]
[…]
[You stepped forward to help the still-kneeling red-haired giant up. He laughed heartily, praising your generosity.][Shuten Doji lifted a foot and kicked the yokai who wouldn’t stop muttering, bellowing. “You worthless rabble! You do nothing but gorge yourselves day and night, have you never heard the tale of the Dragon Father’s Nine Sons, each one different?!”]
[One yokai hesitantly asked, “But Lord Shuten, I too have heard of the Dragon God’s Nine Sons… Yet this Dragon God’s Descendant doesn’t much resemble any of them.”]
[“I am dull-witted, might I ask, which of the Nine Sons is this one?”]
[Shuten Doji frowned at these words and examined your appearance closely…]
Lin Xun’s heart lurched.
After all, he was a counterfeit Dragon God’s Descendant.
The Little Dragonkin shell was a scion of the Hermit Progenitor’s bloodline, and its head was that of a western dragon, a horned giant lizard, completely unlike the true dragons of Eastern myth.
The suspicions of these yokai were not unfounded. Saying it was the mixed offspring of serpent, lizard, and bat yokai…was honestly quite an apt description.
If Shuten Doji saw through his true identity, this Librarian’s trial would probably end right there.
“I have to buy time! There are only a little over ten minutes left, no matter what, I have to keep Shuten Doji occupied until then…”
[Just as you were about to open your mouth to explain, the aged voice spoke in your ear once more…]
[Powerful Apostle, he never imagined you would endure so long against Shuten Doji, truly astonishing.]
[As the Librarian, he deeply respected your strength. But your good fortune has now run dry, for the next yokai is a being no less powerful than Shuten Doji.]
[Two top-class great yokai appearing in succession, no matter how far beyond ordinary Apostles you may be, you will not be able to hold out any longer.]
[The aged voice gradually faded. From the distant woods came the figure of a graceful woman.]
[You focused your gaze and saw an incomparable beauty approaching. Her brows were as delicate as a spring mountain, her eyes glimmering like autumn waves. Silken black hair, an oval face with peach-pink cheeks, full bosom, slender waist, shapely hips and long legs…]
[She walked barefoot over the ashen remains of the Sacred Fire, each step light as a lotus blossom, her gait swaying with a seductive allure.]
[The beauty gazed at you with a gentle smile. In the shifting light of her eyes there seemed to be endless tenderness. From behind her hips, nine fluffy fox tails slowly rose.]
[The woman came before you and knelt in greeting, her voice soft and sweet, “I am the Nine-Tailed Fox, humbly welcoming the Dragonborn Lord.”]
[You helped the Nine-Tailed Fox to her feet, only for her to give a delicate gasp and tumble into your arms. Warm fragrant softness filled your embrace, plump curves pressing against you like flowing water, leaving you momentarily flustered.]
[All the yokai watching glared with blazing eyes and heavy breathing, but not a single one dared to move.]
[Shuten Doji clicked his tongue in disapproval but ignored how the Nine-Tailed Fox tried to fawn on you. Facing the yokai behind him, he explained, “Though the Dragonborn Lord’s true form does not resemble any of the Nine Sons, the aura of the Dragon God’s blood cannot be faked.”]
[From this, it is clear that the Dragon Father’s divine offspring are not limited to nine. The Nine in the tale of the Nine Sons is likely just a number, a figure of speech for ‘many.’]
[These words instantly won the yokai’s admiring gazes…]
[Shuten Doji burst into hearty laughter, convinced this theory was flawless and perfectly reasonable.]
[He looked back to you and bowed again, inquiring. “May I ask, Dragonborn Lord, why you have summoned us? Do you have any command for us? If so, we will surely serve you with all our strength!”]
[The Nine-Tailed Fox in your arms lifted her exquisite face, her gaze sultry and questioning.]
[Apostle bearing the Dragon God’s bloodline, how will you answer?]
[1. As a Dragonborn, your yang energy has been boiling lately. After summoning all these yokai to battle, your liver fire has cooled, but your kidney fire still blazes. You must join with the Nine-Tailed Fox to ease it.]
[2. As a Dragonborn, you are replenishing the Divine Treasury on behalf of the Chaotic Origin Dragon. The Dragon God has always loved treasures, and the Divine Treasury has not been enriched for ages. Thus you have summoned the yokai to offer tribute and fill the vault.]
[3. As a Dragonborn, you are proclaiming the divine oracle of the Chaotic Origin Dragon. Before long, an evil god will descend to disrupt the world’s order. All elder yokai must prepare for war, while the young must hide themselves away.]
It seemed the Little Dragonkin’s identity had triggered a special event.
The infernal game abruptly popped up a choice prompt.
Lin Xun stared at the three options, feeling extremely conflicted.
“Why does this damned game never give a multiple-choice prompt? Always one single choice, so stingy.”
Though there was no time limit shown for the choices, it was just an illusion, there was, in fact, a time limit!
Lin Xun checked the time, only seven minutes remained until the trial would end.
This meant that if he wanted to earn the extra reward, he had to pick an option and complete the subsequent event within those seven minutes.
Just earlier, he had thought that a trial of one hundred yokai was far too long. Now he wished there were a hundred more.
After all, with two top-tier yokai kings standing guard at his side, if any clueless lesser yokai dared to commit the outrage of attacking the Dragonborn, he wouldn’t even need to lift a finger, Shuten Doji and the Nine-Tailed Fox would immediately obliterate them.
Lin Xun looked at the options and carefully weighed their meanings.
By habit, he first ruled out the joke option, the first one.
The second option invoked the name of the Chaotic Origin Dragon to plunder offerings of yokai fat and treasure, clearly a route to obtain equipment or items as rewards.
The third option, however, left Lin Xun unable to fully grasp its significance.
The safest choice was obviously the second. No matter what kind of gear or items he might get, it would never be a loss.
But he couldn’t forget that he was still inside the Librarian’s illusion.
All the yokai here were phantoms drawn from before the God Wars, in reality, these creatures were probably long since turned to dust.
And defeating them in the illusion yielded no experience or loot.
So even if he picked the second option, any reward was guaranteed to be an illusion that couldn’t be taken out.
Excluding the two dead-end options, only the third remained.
As he deliberated, three more yokai spawned. Lin Xun didn’t have time to keep pondering what the third option truly meant.
He swiftly pressed the option.
