Chapter 187-2: Fierce Battle with the Legendary Starborn Spirit (2)

Chapter 187-2: Fierce Battle with the Legendary Starborn Spirit (2)

Lin Xun drew a deep breath and shifted his gaze to an item in his inventory.

[White Dwarf Star Elixir (Item): A glass vial filled with grayish-white liquid. Shattering the vial will instantly vaporize the contents, producing an unknown effect.]

[Using this item inflicts a severe Weakened status on starborn creatures. This item only works on ordinary, elite, and legendary creatures of the stars. It has no effect on demigods, pseudo gods, or gods of the Radiant Stars oath.]

He had obtained this item after killing the Multivision President.

Most likely, the Multivision President had worried that using the Ring of the Radiant Stars could summon a starborn creature too powerful to control, preventing him from stepping onto the path to godhood. So he had prepared this White Dwarf Star Elixir to counter such formidable starborn.

However, how much effect the so-called severe Weakened state would actually have on a Legendary Starborn Spirit remained to be seen.

What concerned Lin Xun most was that with the terrifying power of a Legendary Starborn Spirit, even if he used the White Dwarf Star Elixir, he still might not be able to defeat the beast…

“At this point, there’s no other strategy. I have to try!”

He pressed the option to ‘Refuse Transformation and Attack’, then immediately clicked to use the item!

[You hurl the White Dwarf Star Elixir at the giant beast before you!][Crack! With a crisp sound, the glass bottle filled with the ashen liquid shattered, and a cloud of pale smoke billowed up, enveloping the colossal creature.]

[From within the haze came the giant beast’s enraged, bewildered roar…]

[“Starborn! What are you doing?!” Why… why does it feel its strength is fading?!]

Lin Xun’s eyes went cold.

He rapidly switched shells and issued a command to the Valkyrie.

[You have possessed the Knowledge-Seeking President of the Direct Vision Association shell!]

[You quickly retreated, distancing yourself from the giant shape shrouded in smoke.]

[You raised your staff and began to chant…]

[A pure white Knowledge Barrier surged up from the ground, shielding you completely within it.]

[Battle Angel – Valkyrie beat her wings and soared aloft. Drawing her longbow, she softly chanted a melody, and countless fine characters flowed into the Arrow of Dragon-Slaying!]

[As you watched the dispersing smoke in the distance, you raised your staff again and recited your incantation…]

[…]

[The haze gradually thinned, and a deafening roar echoed through the hall.]

[Legendary Starborn Spirit – Thunderbeast Mammoth threw back its head with a thunderous bellow. The massive scythe-like tusks beneath its jaws nearly punctured the hall’s vaulted ceiling. Lowering its head, the four crossed blades leveled straight at you as it charged!]

[Strangely, its charge lacked the overwhelming force you had imagined. The giant beast moved its limbs in a ponderous, almost feeble gait, like an old creature at death’s door.]

[Yet even so, its massive size allowed it to close the distance on you with alarming speed…]

[As you watched the giant beast approaching, you noticed that the once-lustrous black chitin had dulled into a decaying, ashen hue.]

[Battle Angel – Valkyrie loosed her bowstring. The enormous arrow wreathed in characters transformed into a white dragon that struck the Thunderbeast Mammoth head-on!]

[The arrow pierced the chitin like a falling star and buried itself deep in the creature’s flesh!]

[A spray of eerie green blood erupted. The Thunderbeast Mammoth’s charge faltered, its agonized roar making your eardrums ring painfully.]

After the Valkyrie had learned Melody of Knowledge, her arrows could no longer be considered purely physical attacks, they carried the dual damage of knowledge magic.

[With the Weakened effect sapping its power, the Valkyrie’s strongest strike dealt a serious blow to the boss.]

[Thunderbeast Mammoth’s eyes blazed crimson. It abruptly turned and charged at the Valkyrie!]

[You spoke the final syllable of your incantation…]

[Your staff rose high as dazzling starlight burst forth!]

[The entire hall filled with blinding radiance, and the beast’s anguished howls reverberated everywhere.]

[When the light finally dimmed, a swath of the creature’s upper chitin had cracked and sloughed away, revealing dense cords of muscle beneath.]

[The Thunderbeast Mammoth let out a roar, swung its body around, and charged you again!]

[The Valkyrie drew another arrow swirling with currents of wind and loosed another shot…]

[Legendary Starborn Spirit – Thunderbeast Mammoth has taken some damage!]

[It abandoned its nearly successful trampling attack on you and instead turned to charge the Valkyrie once more…]

[You raised your staff and began chanting again…]

[…]

“Dealing with this brainless boss is so simple. As long as I and the Valkyrie keep kiting it and taking turns inflicting damage, we can make it run around in circles.”

That was the mage’s advantage: high damage and the ability to kite enemies at range. With the Valkyrie’s formidable assistance, he could push this tactic to the absolute limit.

The only problem was that the Thunderbeast Mammoth’s health bar was ridiculously long.

Two of the Valkyrie’s powerful arrow shots plus one use of the legendary skill Falling Starlight had only managed to inflict some damage.

Without the White Dwarf Star Elixir’s weakening effect, the idea of kiting this boss to death would have been sheer fantasy.

Endless starlight erupts!

[You feel somewhat fatigued!]

[The giant beast once again changes its target. Just as before, the Valkyrie draws her bow and fires.]

[But her Arrow of Dragon-Slaying and Hurricane Arrow are still lodged in the beast’s body. Until the Thunderbeast Mammoth dies, she cannot retrieve them and can only use ordinary arrows to inflict damage.]

[This time, the fired arrows did not pierce the Thunderbeast Mammoth’s chitin!]

[Alarmed, you look closely and see its chitin slowly regaining its original luster. Its legs are moving faster and more forcefully, and its charge is growing ever swifter!]

[You realize the Weakened effect from the White Dwarf Star Elixir is slowly wearing off.]

[Arrows that fail to penetrate the chitin cannot damage the beast, and naturally cannot make it change targets.]

[You chant your incantation, watching helplessly as the charging beast closes in!]

“Damn it, why is the potion’s duration so short!”

Lin Xun barely had time to curse before facing mortal danger.

[You hurriedly cut off your chant and dispelled the Knowledge Barrier. The abrupt interruption of a powerful spell makes your head spin and blood dribble from your nose.]

[You have taken minor damage!]

[Without bothering to wipe away the blood, you turn and flee…]

Could a mage outrun the Thunderbeast Mammoth?

Of course not!

Thinking fast, Lin Xun opened his inventory and moved the Abyss Lantern into the Valkyrie’s equipment slot.

If the Valkyrie equipped the Abyss Lantern, she could use the item’s special effect to draw the boss’s attention, stopping it from targeting him.

[Your watcher is too far away to change equipment!]

“Dammit, damn this hellish game, screwing me again!”

[Behind you, the deafening footfalls drew closer and closer. You were about to be trampled into a puddle of meat by the Legendary Starborn Spirit – Thunderbeast Mammoth.]

Gritting his teeth, Lin Xun operated with lightning speed.

[You have possessed the Corrupted Ancient Theater Dancer shell!]

[You step into nimble footwork and open a pair of dim eyes…]

[The starlight within the hall blazes brightly. Your shell skill Bloodshadow Step is boosted by Dim Shadow, and its concealment effect is greatly enhanced!]

[The Thunderbeast Mammoth suddenly loses sight of you. It lets out a furious roar and, carried by its massive momentum, charges straight ahead, unaware that you, still hidden, have already changed direction and slipped far behind it.]

“Good thing I removed the flaw from Dim Shadow, or I’d be dead meat by now.”

Lin Xun let out a long breath, feeling as though he’d just survived by a hair’s breadth.
