Chapter 179-2: The Ancient Demon at the Bottom of the Abyss (2)

Chapter 179-2: The Ancient Demon at the Bottom of the Abyss (2)

From the information he had obtained earlier, he knew that before his death, Maguire had sent a message to the Multivision President claiming the abyssal demon’s strength was on par with the President’s.

But judging from things now, it was far more likely that the abyssal demon’s power vastly exceeded the Multivision President’s.

Maguire had probably started harboring suspicions and resentment toward him and intended to drag the President down to die together.

If Lin Xun hadn’t intervened, causing the Multivision President to prematurely fuse with the Star Demon test subject, the President would likely have died here as well.

[You step up to the edge of the cliff…]

[Right before you yawned the bottomless darkness of the endless abyss. Gazing into that pure blackness, you felt a sudden urge to leap down and surrender yourself to it.]

[The frigid wind gusting up from the abyss pushed at your back, as if trying to compel you to jump in.]

[Do you wish to jump into the abyss?]

Lin Xun ignored the hellish game’s text prompting him to throw himself to his death.

[You possessed the Knowledge-Seeking President of the Direct Vision Association Shell!][You took out the Refined Copper Sand Maraca and gently shook it. The Battle Angel – Valkyrie responded to your summons, stepping forth from the void.]

[The Battle Angel – Valkyrie narrowed her eyes, peering around. In this pitch-black environment, she could only rely on the glow emanating from your Thunder Dragon Staff-Spear to see anything nearby.]

Based on his past experiences in the illusion books, the abyssal demon almost certainly had the ability to fly.

The mage Shell and the Valkyrie had excellent anti-air combat capability, far superior to the short-reach Earth Giant or the Three-Headed Lion.

The problem now was that the Valkyrie was unable to fight properly in the darkness.

If he could overcome this, Lin Xun’s odds of victory would improve dramatically.

Facing an abyssal demon whose power far surpassed the Multivision President, and with only a single opportunity to challenge it, he had no choice but to give this everything he had. Any chance to raise his odds, no matter how small, could not be missed.

After pondering for a moment, Lin Xun opened his skill panel to try something.

[You raised your two staves and chanted an incantation…]

[Countless characters flickering with white light manifested in the air, then vanished, bursting into a blinding flash!]

[Pure white brilliance illuminated your surroundings, clearly revealing everything nearby, yet failing to pierce the darkness of the abyss below…]

[Leaning over to look down by the glow, you could only see the cliff beneath your feet stretching endlessly into the black, the hidden depths seemingly without end.]

[The light faded, and darkness once again swallowed you.]

Knowledge Radiance had already become an instant-cast skill, and being only Rare+ grade, its mana consumption was minimal.

So long as the demon appeared, he could use this skill to light up the Valkyrie’s vision, creating short windows of attack.

At the Valkyrie’s firing speed, she should have no trouble loosing several arrows in each window.

By using Knowledge Radiance repeatedly between spell cooldowns, even if it wouldn’t allow the Valkyrie to go full throttle, it would still add a considerable amount of firepower.

Lin Xun completed all preparations.

Then he used the Book of Characters to awaken the abyssal demon.

[You took out the flickering Book of Characters, recited the intricate incantations within, and tossed the book into the darkness…]

[The book fell into the pitch-black abyss, shrinking further and further until it was just a barely visible speck of light, then was completely swallowed by darkness.]

[…]

[You raised your staff and murmured an incantation…]

[The pure white Knowledge Barrier rose from the ground, firmly shielding you within!]

Lin Xun cast the magic shield in advance, fully prepared.

[…]

[…]

Minutes passed by, second after second.

Five entire minutes went by, yet the grand boss still didn’t appear.

“What’s going on? Is the abyss really so deep that the demon is just taking forever to fly up here?”

Lin Xun recalled that during the abyssal expedition in the illusion book, when the Grand Scholar had awakened the demon, it hadn’t taken anywhere near this long.

“Sure enough, the ancient abyssal demon is far stronger than an ordinary demon, even its appearance time is greatly extended.”

He did not let his guard down and continued to wait.

[…]

[…]

[You gazed into the still pitch-black abyss, growing a bit bored.]

[Have you considered that the reason the Ancient Abyssal Demon has yet to appear might simply be because it is sleeping too deeply?]

[Do you wish to leave this place?]

Lin Xun automatically ignored the hellish game’s sarcastic taunting.

He’d sparred in wits with this damned game often enough to understand its tricks.

The more insistently it tried to urge him to leave, the richer the rewards that were waiting here were bound to be.

Besides, the demon had already been awakened by Maguire once before, how could it possibly be sleeping so deeply now?

[…]

[As the long wait continued, you grew somewhat bored.]

[Gazing into the still black abyss, you suddenly felt a compulsion to throw yourself down into it.]

[Do you wish to jump into the abyss?]

Another five minutes passed, and the hellish game resumed its mocking commentary.

Lin Xun frowned.

Even if this was an ancient abyssal demon and a grand boss, this wait time was absurdly long.

At first, he’d thought it was just the hellish game trying to rush him away, as usual, to keep him from claiming the reward.

But now, he began to suspect that the Book of Characters had failed to awaken the demon at all.

Reviewing the earlier text, he suddenly noticed a crucial clue he had overlooked.
