Chapter 168-1: The Central Monster, Legendary-Grade Divine Item (1)
“Central monster!”
That colossal creature was so enormous it stood taller than the three-story building that had once occupied this spot.
The giant monster had a jackal-like ferocious head, while its body was that of a primate, covered in coarse, black bristles.
It threw back its head and roared at the sky. The deafening shockwave spread out in rings.
All the Apostles in the vicinity whose strength was a bit lower clutched their ears in agony, blood faintly seeping from between their fingers.
The central monster lifted its massive foot and stamped down toward the nearest team member…
Lu Caiyi raised her lion-head gauntlets, ready to rush to the rescue, but someone was faster.
A burly figure, exuding unmatched ferocity, had already charged beneath the monster’s descending foot.
Wang Zong kicked the exhausted team member out of danger and faced the enormous foot coming down on his own.
The burly man let out a thunderous roar, raised both hammers, stepped forward with a stomp, twisted his hips and waist, and rotated his torso, channeling the surging power through his arms. His two war hammers swept upward as if to cleave the sky itself, smashing into the massive foot above.
“BOOM!!”
The earth-shaking crash made everyone’s eardrums swell with pain. At the point where Wang Zong clashed with the central monster, blood and flesh sprayed in all directions. That towering monster staggered under the blow, retreating again and again, kicking up sand everywhere.
Wang Zong was drenched in blood. The dense spikes of his hammers were dripping with bits of flesh and bloody foam.
The blood wasn’t his, it belonged to the central monster.
He let out a bold, hearty laugh and charged at the beast again with his hammers raised.
Compared to their sizes, it was like a tiny mouse taking the offensive against a ferocious tiger.
Yet to everyone’s astonishment, it was the massive central monster that was driven back again and again.
Seeing Wang Zong pummel the monster into retreat, Lu Caiyi let out a long breath.
She and several still-capable team members helped the exhausted and wounded colleagues to their feet and gathered them together to protect them.
Once everyone was settled, Lu Caiyi tightened her gauntlets, ready to join the fight and help Wang Zong finish the monster quickly.
At that moment, sudden change struck.
The central monster, battered and reeling under the twin hammers, suddenly dropped its huge body low.
Its form rapidly transformed. The forelimbs elongated, the hind limbs shortened, sharp claws sprouted from all four limbs, and a tail emerged from its rear.
The central monster forcibly shifted from a wolf-headed humanoid into a giant wolf.
The four-legged wolf’s shoulder height nearly reached two stories, even larger than an African elephant.
This giant wolf seemed to understand that the little mouse in front of it possessed strength vastly exceeding its own.
It no longer tried to battle the little mouse and instead lunged at Lu Caiyi in the distance.
More precisely, it lunged for the team members she was protecting.
The wolf’s charge was as swift as lightning, several times faster than when it had a humanoid form. In the blink of an eye, it reached Lu Caiyi, leaving Wang Zong, dragging his hammers, far behind.
Its massive, razor-sharp claws glinted coldly as they tore toward the wounded team members.
Without the slightest hesitation, Lu Caiyi raised her iron fists and charged forward to meet it!
She clashed head-on with the giant wolf monster without yielding an inch.
But to her surprise, after exchanging a blow, the wolf leapt past her, lunging at the wounded team members behind.
This pounce was as fast as a thunderbolt. Lu Caiyi couldn’t block it in time, and Wang Zong, even farther away, had no chance of intervening.
Within the protective circle, Lu Weidong watched as the terrifying beast barreled toward them, and his heart felt incomparably calm.
From the moment he’d joined the Armed Division as a security officer, he’d been ready for this day.
“To think I won’t get to have one last cigarette before dying… what a pity…”
Lu Weidong quietly closed his eyes.
In the distance, Wang Zong’s expression tensed. In his hand, he manifested a palm-sized round shield.
With a sudden motion, he crushed the shield.
In that instant, dozens of ancient soldiers appeared out of thin air within the protective circle. They wore rooster-crested helmets, each gripping a gleaming spear in one hand and raising a massive silver shield in the other.
The soldiers lifted their great shields and sheltered the protective circle beneath them, forming a dome-shaped tortoise shell formation.
The central monster crashed down onto the shields but couldn’t shake the unyielding formation.
“You bastard thing! You dare run away?! You made me waste a precious item!”
Wang Zong gnashed his teeth and dragged his hammers after the giant wolf.
The central monster opened its gaping maw full of fangs, bit down on a shield, and with a shake of its wolfish head, tore an entire soldier out of the tortoise shell, shield and all.
It swallowed the soldier in one gulp and lunged at the formation again. Yet where it had pulled away the soldier, the gap had already been filled by the others lifting their shields.
Wang Zong finally caught up and swung his hammer down at the giant wolf.
But the wolf refused to fight him head-on. Relying on its incredible speed, it circled the tortoise shell with Wang Zong in futile pursuit, occasionally snatching another soldier out of the formation to devour.
“Damn it, come fight me if you’ve got the guts! Why the hell are you running?!”
The remaining team members, including Lu Caiyi, were all safe within the shield formation.
Wang Zong had maxed out his strength stat, yet he still couldn’t catch up to the wolf, forced to watch helplessly as the protective circle shrank bit by bit under the monster’s relentless predation.
He flipped his wrist, stowing both hammers to lighten himself and quicken his steps.
But even without the weight of the hammers, he was still far slower than the giant wolf.
“The Intelligence Division is closest, why hasn’t Li Xingyue’s support arrived yet?!”
Wang Zong’s shell was that of a berserker with every point allocated to raw power. If only the wolf would stand and fight him, he was confident he could crush it within two minutes.
But faced with a central monster this fast, all his strength was useless.
Among the team members, there were indeed those with agility-focused and ranged-attack shells, but those members were either stuck at the third difficulty or bottlenecked at the fourth difficulty.
Facing a central monster with power equivalent to a fourth-difficulty stage boss, they not only couldn’t break out of the protective barrier before the defensive item’s power ran out, even if they did get out, they’d be delivering themselves to slaughter.
To avoid alerting any hidden New World Apostles observing from the shadows, all departments other than the Armed Division could only arrive at the normal support speed, they couldn’t preemptively gather near the Public Security Bureau to resist the contamination zone together.
Fortunately, the defensive item obtained from headquarters was extremely reliable. Holding out until the other departments arrived with reinforcements would be more than enough.
The sandstorm vortex encircling the Public Security Bureau gradually expanded. Without slaying the central monster, the contamination zone would keep spreading until it reached the Source of the Apocalypse’s limit.
Just as Wang Zong was worrying that the contamination zone would grow too large for the Idyllic Sanctuary’s illusion to fully cover it, several figures charged into the sandstorm.
