Chapter 120: Proxy Agent, Storm Scroll of Thunder from the Cloudless Wastes!
Chapter 120: Proxy Agent, Storm Scroll of Thunder from the Cloudless Wastes!
[Blood King: After leaving the Disciple Sanctum, I was focused solely on completing your command, my Lord. I immediately attempted to invade Horseback Samurai, but to my surprise, Transmitter had already struck first…]
[Blood King: I stared at the information on the note, lost in thought. It made sense that you, my Lord, would give me Horseback Samurai’s soul imprint, but why did you also give me Transmitter’s soul imprint?]
[Blood King: I pondered endlessly. Surely, your decision must have carried deeper meaning. There’s no way you just wrote the same thing down for me and Transmitter without intention.]
[Amos: …]
[Blood King: I racked my brains, trying to interpret your intention to hopefully relieve you of your burdens… and finally, I reached a conclusion!]
[Blood King: You had already foreseen that Transmitter would act before me, and that Horseback Samurai would surely perish.]
[Blood King: But Transmitter was one of Talros’s old guard. If word got out that he killed a fellow former comrade just because Horseback Samurai refused to bend the knee immediately… it would damage your reputation, make you seem intolerant.]
[Blood King: So, you sent an unknown newcomer like me to clean up loose ends. That way, there would be no consequences. When viewed this way, everything makes perfect sense. I cannot help but admire your foresight and cunning, my Lord.]
[Amos: …]
[Blood King: I had thought we had a tacit understanding about all this. But now that you’re asking me to explain it all… I fear my end is near. No doubt I’ll soon follow Transmitter into the grave.][Blood King: But rest assured, my Lord. To preserve your reputation, even if you kill me, I won’t utter a single word of what’s happened. I used up a precious item and fought Transmitter to the death, and I did so willingly.]
[Amos: …]
Lin Xun had no idea what expression Amos might have right now, but he figured his wall of self-sacrificial reasoning had probably left the man dumbfounded.
After a long pause, a new message finally appeared in the chatbox.
[Amos: Interesting! Very interesting!]
[Amos: Do you want to become my proxy agent?]
Lin Xun’s brow furrowed. This felt… off.
Amos wasn’t punishing him, instead he seemed ready to promote him?
He couldn’t help but speculate. Amos wasn’t a fool; even if he believed half of Lin Xun’s speech, that would be generous.
Most likely, Amos simply saw him as ruthless, decisive and willing to kill a rival to secure a mission.
That sort of personality fit right in with the New World’s brutal style. To Amos, he was a promising candidate, worth cultivating.
[Blood King: I am honored to serve, my Lord… But I am still new. What duties would a proxy agent be expected to perform?]
[Amos: The higher-ups in the organization oversee many regions. They can’t be everywhere at once. A proxy agent, as the name implies, acts on behalf of a superior to manage a designated area as its de facto leader.]
Becoming a proxy agent was clearly a deeper infiltration than staying a low-level underling.
But when a pie falls from the sky, it’s not always good news.
[Blood King: Your grace is beyond what I deserve, my Lord, I shall remember it always!]
[Amos: I still need agents for Hang City, Ning City, and Wen City. Where do you want to go?]
Lin Xun’s heart tightened. Was Amos testing to see where he was located?
[Blood King: If I may be so bold, I’d like to try Hang City.]
[Amos: Heh. Hang City is a provincial capital, with Heavenly Punishment of the Apostle Security Council stationed there. You’re too weak, going there would be suicide.]
[Amos: Fine. You’ll go to Wen City. I’ll give you a mission. If you complete it, you’ll become the proxy agent of Wen City.]
As expected, Amos still had his doubts.
To become a proxy agent, Lin Xun would first have to pass a test.
[Blood King: I await your command, my Lord!]
[You have obtained Note for Recording Information (Junk).]
[Amos: Follow the instructions written on the note. If you succeed, you’ll be the agent for Wen City.]
[Amos: That’s all, dismissed.]
The chat window vanished, and the game text confirmed that Amos had left.
Lin Xun quickly teleported back to his own chapter and opened his inventory.
[Note for Recording Information (Junk): The note reads: Tomorrow at 12 noon, go to Room 404 of the Shangri-La Hotel in Wen City.]
Lin Xun frowned. Was Amos asking for a real-life meetup?
Online chats turning into offline encounters often ended in disaster, he couldn’t afford to be careless.
If Amos saw through him during the meeting, a fight would be inevitable.
Amos was a prime candidate for the Twelve Disciples, while he himself was just a Difficulty Four Apostle. Even Amos had said his strength was only passable.
Which meant Amos’s true level and power were in another league entirely.
It was already late into the night.
He quickly dialed the black stocking lady.
His superior seemed to have already gone to bed. After a long pause, the call connected, her voice carried a hint of drowsiness.
Lin Xun told Li Xingyue everything that had happened today.
“You’re saying you not only infiltrated the Disciple Sanctum, killed a New World member, but also got promoted to become Amos’s proxy agent for Wen City?”
Li Xingyue’s voice sharpened immediately, disbelief written all over it.
Lin Xun himself found it a little surreal, and joked.
“That’s right, Team Leader Li. You’ll be the white-market queen of Wen City, and I’ll be the black-market king. We’re a perfect match.”
“Cut it out. Stay put, I’m coming over.”
She hung up. Lin Xun waited quietly at home.
About twenty minutes later, he heard the sharp tack-tack of heels echoing through the stairwell.
He opened the door and there stood Li Xingyue, dressed in a black silk spaghetti-strap gown.
Bare white shoulders peeked out from beside the straps. Below the hem, smooth, long legs extended gracefully. Her half-lidded peach blossom eyes still carried a trace of sleep, enchanting and languid.
It was the first time Lin Xun had seen his superior like this. Clearly, she had rushed over straight after getting out of bed.
Li Xingyue shut the door behind her and dragged him to sit on the sofa.
“Amos is clearly still suspicious of you. Even if he called you to the hotel, that doesn’t guarantee he’ll show up himself.”
“But just in case, we have to prepare for everything.”
“Tomorrow, I’ll have Lu Caiyi go with you. Also, take this item, use it if necessary.”
As she spoke, a scroll made of yellowed parchment appeared in her hand, golden lightning arcing faintly around its edges.
[Storm Scroll of Thunder from the Cloudless Wastes (Epic+ Item): Crafted from tanned dragonhide, this scroll contains overwhelmingly destructive lightning energy. Tearing the scroll will unleash its sealed power.]
[This item offers two attack modes: The first is an AOE strike, releasing lightning indiscriminately to cause catastrophic destruction.]
[The second is a single-target strike, guaranteed to hit the enemy, focusing the entire force into a devastating blast that also inflicts extended paralysis.]
