I Really Didn’t Want to Be a Trainer

Chapter 796: All Pokémon feel pain, but Ultra Beasts don't

Chapter 796: All Pokémon feel pain, but Ultra Beasts don't

Chapter 796 Every Pokémon Feels Pain, But Ultra Beasts Do Not 23

UB Response Unit, the secret base beneath the Malie-Malie Sea.

The calm sea suddenly split open, and a silver-shelled metal fortress rose from the strait.

A corridor hatch opened, a stream of light darted out lightly, revealing a Latias!

The red jet-like Latias kicked up a row of water columns and joyfully ascended.

Lu Ye rode Latias, glancing back at Lila and the Handsome Guy.

They were mounted on a Salamence’s back, Lila directing, the Handsome Guy keeping watch.

Lu Ye looked again at the base slowly descending toward the sea. The déjà vu hit too hard, and Teacher Lu muttered to himself:

“Did I really pick the wrong script…”

Humans manipulated by alien lifeforms, leading Ultra Beasts to invade Alola? This plotline is far too familiar to me!

Lu Ye’s black hair fluttered in the wind, a faint light reflected in his eyes showing the artificial island.

Aether Paradise, so close he could taste it!

Aether Paradise, Space Center.

A bright silver laboratory crowded with research equipment.

Cosmog inside a cylindrical container looked exhausted, sleepily slumped over.

Instruments kept beeping, the large screen’s progress bar nearly complete.

Dazzling light flashed, and a spatial rift formed in the lab ceiling, widening steadily.

Faba looked up with fanatic light in his eyes.

Doo—

The safety door opened, and Lusamine entered the lab with Burnet and Biaoke, demanding:

“Faba! What on earth is going on here!”

Faba stood with his back to the Ultra Wormhole, arms spread, slightly bowing with a hand on his chest:

“As you can see, Director Lusamine, I fulfilled your commission and opened the gateway to the Ultra World for you.”

Lusamine looked up, lost in thought for a moment, then said:

“I already entrusted Mr. Lu Ye. Why would you act alone and seize Cosmog from Lillie?”

“Lu Ye? Do you think a champion trainer would willingly cooperate with the Aether Foundation?”

“What do you mean!”

“My investigation shows that the Interpol agent who helped dismantle Team Plasma wasn’t the ‘Handsome Guy’ but a rarely seen police inspector.”

“The only one who could know is that inspector, who developed tactical methods on his own and captured Acerola and Ghetsis. Compared to Ms. Lila, he would be the best candidate to be promoted to head of the Response Unit.”

“In other words…”

Faba said:

“That Teacher Lu was obviously conducting a sting operation!”

Lusamine’s gaze froze;

beside her, Biaoke snapped:

“Faba! That still isn’t an excuse for you to release Nihilego and cause chaos!”

“I only accelerated the Director’s plan a little.”

Faba pressed a button and released the cylinder’s wall. Cosmog weakly rolled onto its side.

Faba stepped forward, picked up the 0.1 kg Cosmog, held it high under the glowing Ultra Wormhole, and shouted:

“Come on, Nihilego!! Take us to your world!!”

Sensing Cosmog’s aura, the laboratory walls began to writhe. Soon, a transparent jellyfish-like Nihilego extended its tentacles, attempting to pass its entire body through the wall, emitting a rustling sound.

Biaoke’s face changed;

Burnet urgently said, “Step back, Director Lusamine! Nihilego will release neurotoxin!”

Lusamine stood still, staring calmly.

“I know,” she said softly, “because this Nihilego is the one Moen and I placed in Aether Paradise five years ago.”

Burnet was startled;

Faba looked pleased with himself.

“Five years ago, Nihilego opened an Ultra Wormhole and came to Alola. Moen and I began researching the Ultra Wormholes. Later, Moen disappeared into an Ultra Wormhole, so I thought… with Cosmog’s power, maybe I could go to the Ultra Deep Sea and see him again.” Lusamine’s eyes lost their sparkle.

“Faba, you’ve known about the Director’s plan all along! Why didn’t you stop her!” Burnet demanded.

“Stop her?” Faba sneered, “Why would I do that.”

“Director, look.” Faba spread his arms wide, “this beautiful Ultra Wormhole.”

“The one to make your dream come true is none other than me, Faba!”

Nihilego slipped through the lab wall, floating in the air like a jellyfish, emitting an eerie vibe.

Lusamine watched Nihilego, her eyes losing their highlight as she murmured:

“Yes, I have always loved Ultra Beasts…”

“Don’t be fooled, Director!” Burnet grabbed Lusamine’s hand hard, “This is Faba’s lie to seize control of the Foundation and the Ultra Beasts to satisfy his ambition!”

Faba folded his hands behind his back and watched coldly.

“She opened the Ultra Wormhole and grabbed Cosmog. I did everything. What did I do wrong?”

Burnet was speechless. Lusamine took a step closer to Nihilego, like a girl drawn to the person she loved.

“Type: Null, Tri-Attribute Assault!!”

Burnet and Biaoke were startled and looked over. The blond boy had used his privileges to open the lab door and ordered Type: Null to attack Faba directly!

Beams of ice, fire, and electricity roared in tandem.

Faba’s face changed. He dropped Cosmog and rolled, the beams exploding against the rows of containers, mist spreading and frost forming.

“Phew~” Cosmog dozed, snuffling, entering dormancy while a cocoon-like white light gradually formed around it.

Faba cowered behind the lab bench and said:

“Gladion… that Type: Null is my invention!!”

“No. That name is not Type: Null at all.”

Gladion’s eyes sharpened. “Five years ago you secretly researched Nihilego in this lab and alarmed Lillie. Type: Null protected Lillie from Nihilego, but Lillie was wrongly accused as the cause. To hide your crime, you put a mind-limiting mask on Type: Null, making it more violent.”

Lusamine looked at the son she hadn’t seen in so long and whispered, “Gladion…”

Faba clenched his teeth and stayed silent behind the bench.

“You must be curious how I know all this.”

Gladion said coldly, “I met the ‘Handsome Guy’ during my travels. More importantly… I used my privileges to obtain data on Silver’s companion beast.”

“Silver’s companion beast…” Faba muttered, “Impossible. I didn’t even finish the experiments on that beast!”

“Emotion is a very strange force. Even an artificial Pokémon can have its own ‘heart’.”

Gladion abruptly threw a pitch-black disc;

the dark-type disc struck Type: Null’s body, and the silver armor shone with brilliant white light!

“Silver’s companion beast, Dark Pulse!”

Kala!

The mask on Type: Null’s head shattered into pieces, revealing a majestic beast face with white crest feathers atop its head.

The Silver companion beast gathered a surging Dark Pulse, black light pouring forth!

Faba pressed a button simultaneously.

Boom!!

Smoke and dust rose;

Gladion shielded Lusamine behind him. Biaoke and Burnet exchanged anxious looks.

Gladion’s pupils narrowed. Nihilego floated before Faba and absorbed the dark energy!

“That was close.” Faba dusted off his sleeve and toggled a switch, “The beast-wave I devised based on Acerola’s machine is very useful.”

“Waves that can command Ultra Beasts!?” Burnet exclaimed.

“Strictly speaking, so far only Nihilego’s parameters are compatible, but that’s enough.”

Faba said coldly, “Nihilego, go pick a host you favor.”

Nihilego code-named UB01: parasite. When it parasitizes a human host, it can exert far greater power.

Every Ultraman series has that classic parasitic monster, the episodes are always the darkest, a childhood scar.

Nihilego swung its jellyfish tentacles, nimbly evading Silver’s beam, then suddenly appeared before Lusamine.

“Gladion!”

Lusamine’s pupils shrank as she wrapped her arms protectively around Gladion.

Nihilego’s tentacle reached toward Lusamine, its jellyfish head enveloping her golden hair as its color slowly shifted from white to black.

The horrifying image stunned everyone present;

even Faba’s face soured.

“What kind of… monster is this…” Faba realized he had underestimated the beast and muttered hoarsely.

“Kartana—”

A streak of white light sliced through, supersonic, and a young man’s voice drifted softly.

Any Pokémon hit by an attack will feel pain, fear, or expose a weakness.

But Ultra Beasts don’t feel those things.

The black-haired young man’s gaze was stern as he stood in the backlight and said:

“Scissors Guillotine!”

Swish!

The Kartana sheathed its blades like a surgeon’s precise scalpel, hovering calmly behind Nihilego.

“Tch…” Kartana retracted its blades.

And cut another annoying thing down.

Boom!!

An X-shaped blade line flashed and Nihilego’s tentacles were cut to pieces.

Lusamine collapsed weakly into Gladion’s arms.

Nihilego fell limp from the air like a slack jellyfish and landed on the floor.

Gladion glanced sideways, stunned, and exclaimed: “Master!?”

Lu Ye: “Who are you?”

Gladion stammered, “I, I’m the student you took in Kanto, you may have forgotten me.”

“I know, I’m just joking.”

Lu Ye smiled gently, smoothing Gladion’s blond hair and flattening the tuft.

“You did very well, Gladion. You bought valuable time.”

Gladion’s eyes instantly warmed, reminding him of his father who left years ago.

“No… how can you control Ultra Beasts!?”

Faba’s face was embarrassed.

I studied for five years and barely scratched the surface!

“Even Ultra Beasts can form bonds with humans… you would never understand.”

Even monsters can be companions of Ultraman Seven.

Lu Ye casually tossed out a golden cube.

Kartana’s gaze sharpened;

it drew its blades and in an instant cut the golden cube into tiny squares, stacked them on its blade, and elegantly fed them into its mouth.

Faba: “…”

I’m an idiot.

I shouldn’t have been a scientist. I should have become a chef!

Beside Lu Ye stood Lila in black suit and the trench-coated Handsome Guy detective.

The Handsome Guy took an ID photo from his pocket and said calmly:

“Faba, you are suspected of illegal smuggling, illegal research, and other charges. Please come with us.”

Faba sagged instantly, propping himself up on the lab bench and stammering, “I, I…”

Suddenly, a murderous light flashed in Faba’s eyes as he lunged for the Cosmog on the floor, trying to lift it!

“He’s trying to use Cosmog to cross the Ultra Wormhole!” Burnet shouted.

A shadow extended from under Lu Ye’s feet. Before Haunter could act, Cosmog bloomed with dazzling evolution light!

“What’s happening!” Biaoke cried.

Teacher Lu recalled Bamboo Lan’s research and said:

“Cosmog’s evolution is different from other Pokémon. When its Ultra power is depleted, it evolves into the ‘star cocoon’ Cosmoem to store up energy again.”

“And Cosmoem…”

Lu Ye looked at Faba, red-faced and panting, straining with all his might but failing to lift Cosmog.

“Has a mass of 999.9 kg. One in ten thousand could lift it bare-handed.” Lu Ye said calmly.

Faba was left speechless. It’s just evolving—why such a huge weight difference!

With pursuers in front and no escape behind, Faba noticed the still-living writhing Nihilego. He gritted his teeth, slammed the button, and shouted:

“Nihilego, parasitize my body!”

Nihilego convulsed again, floating ghostlike, flickering beside Faba, and its jellyfish head suddenly swallowed him whole.

A scream rose, and everyone frowned.

Fueled by Faba’s life energy, the near-dead Nihilego revived.

Nihilego parasitizing Lusamine had a kind of sickly beauty…

Parasitizing Faba was… hard to describe.

The Ultra Wormhole in the ceiling generated a powerful suction. Nihilego carrying the unconscious Faba drifted toward the wormhole.

Faba still clutched the control button in his hand, eyes vacant.

“Haunter, stop Faba!” Lu Ye ordered.

This was the gateway to the Ultra Deep Sea, home to countless Nihilego.

If Faba entered, his waves of control would pose an even greater threat.

“Gengarrr~” Haunter’s eyes glowed with immobilizing blue light, a shadow extending beneath its feet to firmly grab Faba’s legs.

The Ultra Wormhole’s light crisscrossed. Lu Ye turned and said:

“Please, Kartana, separate them!”

Kartana nodded slightly, dashed out like a flash of lightning, and with a casual slash severed Nihilego’s tentacles again!

Faba fell with the severed tentacles, thudding loudly.

“Eew~~!”

Nihilego’s tentacles rapidly regenerated, like swimming jellyfish, and hurried back toward the Ultra Wormhole.

If it didn’t retreat now, it would really be guillotined!

Nihilego: o(╥﹏╥)o

All that talk about not feeling pain—what nonsense!

Lusamine weakly opened her eyes and looked toward the Nihilego flying into the wormhole, as if watching her departed husband leave, tears welling in her eyes.

Over the years… founding the Aether Foundation, researching Ultra Beasts, even distancing herself from her children… she had ended up like this…

“Mother.” Gladion said softly, “You still have me and Lillie.”

Lusamine was stunned for a long moment. A tear fell as she gently stroked her child’s cheek.

The Handsome Guy detective spoke:

“Ms. Lusamine, perhaps your husband is not dead.”

Lusamine turned toward the weathered, capable Interpol agent.

“According to the Response Unit’s investigations over the years, people who fall into Ultra Wormholes are sometimes thrown back into another world and become amnesiac ‘Fall’.”

The Handsome Guy continued, “In other words, he may have started a new life somewhere, but forgotten his past.”

“Is that so…” Lusamine trembled, supported by Gladion, covering her face as she wept softly, “Thank you…”

Teacher Lu glanced at the unconscious Faba, then down at his phone. It displayed a news article.

“Faba, Alola’s youngest genius scholar, vows to rid Alola of Ultra Beast crises” …

Lila, in her black suit, silently stood beside the officer.

Lu Ye spoke:

“Every person has both darkness and light within their heart.”

“So, whether someone is good or bad, protecting such people is the job of the Ultra Defense Team.”

“Is it worth it?” Lila asked softly.

“I don’t know. But I firmly believe that even if a person’s inner darkness can’t disappear, it can be turned into light.”

Lu Ye smiled. “Believing in and realizing that future is also something a teacher should do.”

Lila’s eyes flickered, moved, and she saluted, “Yes, sir!”

The lab doors opened again.

Kukui entered with a group of students and paused at the sight of the chaotic lab.

“Mother! Brother!” Lillie ran up and hugged Lusamine.

“I’m fine, Lillie.” Lusamine kissed her daughter’s golden hair lightly, “And thank you and Gladion for never leaving…”

“Are you all right?” Kukui scratched his head and walked over to Burnet.

Burnet rolled her eyes at Kukui and crossed her arms, “You came too late!”

“Sorry…” Kukui smiled awkwardly and looked at the unconscious Faba, “But… it looks like Teacher Lu solved it.”

“Not yet.” Burnet said seriously. “That Ultra Wormhole needs to be sealed, or it will attract even stronger Ultra Beasts!”

The Ultra Wormhole in the ceiling continued to flash white light, exuding Ultra Aura.

Kukui’s eyes drifted to Cosmoem, and he smiled at the idea, saying:

“In that case, we can use Cosmog’s power to close the wormhole!”

“Evolving into Solgaleo would make it easier… but let Cosmoem sleep a little longer.” Burnet said.

“That’s Cosmog?”

Ash stepped forward curiously and bent down to touch the Cosmoem, praised as the ‘star cocoon.’

“Wait, Ash!” Kukui cried.

Cosmoem weighs 999.9 kg;

when unconscious, no one could possibly pick it up!

Ash lifted Cosmoem, holding it in his palms and studied it, surprised:

“It evolved!”

Students swarmed around Ash, chattering, “Let me see~”

Kukui gaped, jaw dropping.

Ash picked up Cosmoem!?

Is that even reasonable!!

Teacher Lu’s expression was complicated.

With Ash and Bewear on our side, I’m not worried about Necrozma showing up at all!

A shadowed Darkrai sighed heavily, face darkened.

Perhaps…

Even the mighty Darkrai of White Poplar Town has his own troubles…
