Chapter 181: I Am Not Going To Abandon My Husband
Lyse gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Murder? Levi? The word hung in the air, heavy and chilling.
Chris’s face paled. "Brett? That’s...that’s impossible," he stammered.
"I’m afraid it’s not." Officer Davies said. "Mr. Van Doren is a suspect in the murder of Brett Faulkner."
Lyse’s mind was reeling. Brett? She could not believe that Levi was incapable of such a thing. She knew that there was no love lost between the two brothers, but Levi would not stoop to that level.
"And that is not all," Officer Davies continued, his gaze shifting to Lyse. "Mr. Van Doren is also being investigated in connection with the death of Sutton Marlowe."
Lyse’s breath hitched. Sutton?
"Sutton?" Chris asked, his voice barely a whisper. "But Levi had been cleared in that case, what is the point of accusing him?"
Officer Davies shrugged. "The investigation is ongoing, We are exploring all possibilities."
Lyse felt a wave of nausea wash over her. This was too much. Levi, accused of murder, not once, but twice? It was unbelievable. She looked at Chris, her eyes pleading for answers.
"Officer Davies," Chris said, his voice regaining its composure, "I understand that you are doing your job, but this is absurd. Levi Van Doren is not a murderer. He would not hurt anyone, you have to be mistaken."
"I am so sorry that you feel this way," Officer Davies replied, "but we have evidence that suggests otherwise. I’m afraid I can’t divulge any further details at this time. This is an ongoing investigation and it is very sensitive considering the status of the suspect and victims."
Chris stood up, his face grim. "I want to see Levi," he demanded.
Officer Davies shook his head. "I am afraid that is not possible right now. He’s being questioned."
"Without his legal counsel?" Chris asked, sounding incensed. "That is against his right!"
Officer Davies seemed flustered when faced with Chris’s accusation. "I... you have to calm down."
"Don’t tell me to calm down!" Chris snapped as he rose to his feet, his voice steely and firm. "I want you to immediately stop that interrogation and release Mr Van Doren or else I will sue the entire department. I will see how you will feel when all your retirement benefits are used to pay off a civil case."
Officer Davies blanched, his eyes widening at the realization that Chris meant every word he had said.
"I’m sorry, give me a minute." The officer said before scrambling out of the room and leaving Chris and Lyse alone in the office.
As he ran out, he cussed his job under his breath. He hated to be the one to have to deal with this high and mighty citizens who thought that they were above the law.
He wished that Levi had been alone when he was arrested, then they would not have to deal with his nosy lawyer until Levi had confessed to the crime. Now their chances had become really low.
When they were left alone, Chris turned to Lyse and sat down, his tone going from threatening to reassuring. "Lyse, don’t you worry. Levi will be fine, I am going to make sure of it."
Lyse shook her head, her hands shaking as she tried and failed to stop the tears that gathered in her eyes.
"How could they say that Levi killed Brett and Sutton, he would never do that." She cried.
"Of course he wouldn’t." Chris assured her and he enveloped her hand in his. "It’s just a mistake that will be cleared up soon."
His voice was more confident than he actually felt inside, and Chris feared the fate that would befall Levi with everything that officer Davies had explained. If by any chance, the case got to court who knew what would happen. Chris knew that they had to do everything possible to stop the case from going forward.
He stood up and dialed Ethan’s number, wondering why he had not yet gotten there when suddenly, the door opened. It was officer Davies.
"Mr Van Doren will have his bail hearing tomorrow." He said.
Chris’s face darkened. "What does that mean?" He demanded.
"That the suspect will have to spend the night in police custody since court will not sit till the morning." Officer Davies explained. "This should give you enough time to prepare his counsel."
"I will not leave without him, I am not going to abandon my husband!" Lyse exclaimed hysterically at the thought of going home without Levi.
"You are going to have to leave ma’am," the officer said. "Or else, I will be forced to place you in a holding cell over night."
"Do whatever you want, i don’t care..." Lyse jumped to her feet with her hands flailing about.
"We will go." Chris interrupted and held Lyse and led her out of the office and down the hall before the officer carried out his threat.
He did not think that Levi would be happy to know that Lyse was arrested while she was in his care, so the best thing to do was to go and strategize.
"I don’t want to leave." Lyse protested tearfully, "we can’t just leave him here."
"Levi is not going to be happy if you are arrested." Chris said, "and of what help will you be to him in jail? Levi needs you to be strong for him."
Lyse sobered up at the thought of Levi and realized that Chris was right, there was no point throwing a tantrum and getting arrested. She needed to be free so that she could help him and not be an additional problem he would be thinking of.
"Do you understand?" Chris asked, his voice firm but not unkind.
Lyse sniffled and nodded her head before wiping the tears off her face and following Chris to the reception where Ethan stood waiting.
"Mr Black is speaking with Mr Van Doren." Ethan explained when they got to his side.
"Mr Black is the best criminal lawyer in the city, he will take care of Levi." Chris assured Lyse who nodded bravely and tried to force herself to believe that this was just one little bump that they would get past.
