Chapter 159: Is Brandon My Son
Brett angrily stormed out of the Van Doren Group building, his bodyguard pushing away the press who clamored around him eager to ask questions. It further reminded him of his failure, hi mind was a maelstrom of rage and panic. He had been so close, so tantalizingly close, to achieving his lifelong goal. But Levi’s unexpected revelation had shattered everything. The carefully constructed plan had backfired spectacularly, leaving him exposed and utterly humiliated.
He snatched the keys from his driver and jumped into the driver’s seat, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, the tires screeching as he sped away from the building. He needed to confront Sutton. She was the one responsible for this mess. She was the one who had lied to him, who had manipulated him, who had ultimately led to his downfall.
He arrived at Sutton’s apartment building, his anger reaching a boiling point. He did not bother with the intercom, simply barging through the lobby and taking the elevator to her floor. He pounded on her door, his fist connecting with the polished wood with a force that echoed through the hallway.
Sutton opened the door, her expression a mixture of surprise and apprehension. She could clearly sense his anger, his volatile state and she backed away.
Before she could speak, Brett reached out and grabbed her by the throat, his fingers tightening around her neck. He slammed her against the wall, the impact jarring her.
"Is he mine?" Brett snarled, his voice a low, menacing growl. "Is Brandon my son?"
Sutton’s eyes widened in terror. She could feel the pressure on her throat, the air being squeezed from her lungs while she clawed at his hand that refused to lessen it grip. She tried to speak, but no words came out.
Brett tightened his grip, his eyes burning with rage. "Answer me!" he yelled, his voice echoing through the apartment. "Is Brandon my son, did you lie to me?!"
Sutton finally managed to choke out a response, her voice barely a whisper. "Yes," she gasped, her eyes filled with fear.
Brett’s grip loosened slightly, but he still held her pinned against the wall and he hit the wall on the side of her head. "You lied to me," he said, his voice laced with venom. "You made me think that I had an upper hand."
"I... I did it for Brandon," Sutton stammered, her voice trembling. "I wanted the best for him."
"The best?" Brett scoffed, his voice filled with disgust. "You call this the best? Lying about his paternity? Deceiving an entire family?"
He released her abruptly, pushing her away. Sutton stumbled back, catching her breath, her hand clutching her throat.
"I wanted him to have a stable life," she said, her voice regaining some of its strength. "I wanted him to have a future, the Van Doren name, the Van Doren fortune. Levi was the better choice. He was the legitimate son, the one who would inherit everything. What was i supposed to do."
Brett stared at her, his anger intensifying. He could not believe her audacity, her complete lack of remorse.
"You are not but a conniving lying whore," he hissed, his voice filled with disgust. "You used me, you used Levi, you used Chris and you definitely used your own son."
Sutton met his gaze, her expression hardening. She refused to be cowed by his insults, by his anger.
"What makes you think that you are any better than me? You are just like me, Brett," she said, her voice firm. "You are just as ambitious, even more ruthless. You would have done the same thing if you were in my position."
Brett remained silent, his mind reeling. He knew she was right. He had always been driven by ambition, by a desire for wealth and power. He had been willing to do whatever it took to achieve his goals.
He looked at Sutton, his anger slowly simmering, replaced by a strange sense of understanding. They were two sides of the same coin, two individuals driven by the same desires, the same ruthless ambition.
"You know, you are right," he admitted, his voice low as he stalked her and she backed away from him. "I am like you, that is why you should know what I would do to someone who betrayed me."
Sutton cringed at the cold emotionless expression in Brett’s eyes, he was even more scary calm than when he had been raging.
When she had gotten backed up against the wall and had nowhere to run to, he gently caressed her face and said. "You cost me a lot Sutton, you really cost me a lot. I am not in a very forgiving mood, I will just have to ponder on your punishment."
He abruptly turned and walked towards the door, his steps heavy, his mind filled with a mixture of anger, frustration, and a grudging respect for Sutton’s cunning. She was a woman who knew exactly what she wanted and she had gone for it, he had no other choice than to respect her guts. Unfortunately, it had cost him his victory.
He had lost this battle, but he was not about to give Levi the satisfaction of seeing him lose. He would find another way, another strategy to achieve his ambitions. He wouldn’t forget this. He would make them pay. He would make them all pay.
As he left, Sutton stood there, catching her breath, a complex mix of emotions playing across her face. She had survived yet another confrontation, had defended her choices, but the cost was evident. The web of lies she had spun had begun to unravel, and the consequences were only just beginning to unfold.
She feared what was coming next, Brandon was going to hate her when he found out what had happened. But she had done everything she did to protect them both and give them a future worth living.
