Chapter 120: Divine Intervention
Chapter 120: Divine Intervention
The phone call had been a bolt from the blue. Brandon had still been wallowing in self-pity, replaying the events of the past few weeks in his mind, when his phone rang. He had been reluctant to answer it until he thought that it might be his grandmother. Instead, it was a nurse from the hospital. Lyse had woken up. And she was asking for him.
A surge of disbelief, followed by an overwhelming sense of hope, flooded through him. He had not spoken to Lyse since that disastrous dinner at her parents house, he had tried to reach her but she had constantly rebuffed him.
The guilt had eaten at him, a constant reminder of his betrayal. He had realized much too late that he loved her, he had been blinded by lust and his stupidity. He had resigned himself to the fact that he had lost her forever.
Now, this call. It felt like a miracle. Had she forgiven him? Had she somehow found it in her heart to give him another chance? He didn’t dare to fully believe it, but the flicker of hope was enough to propel him into action.
Maybe she had become disillusioned with Levi and decided to move on from him. In his deluded mind, Brandon was eager to be reunited with Lyse and he did not think that it was out of character for her to want to go from father to son.
He hurriedly washed his face and threw on a jacket, grabbed his keys, and rushed out of his apartment for the first time in weeks, his heart pounding with anticipation. The drive to the hospital felt like an eternity. He replayed imagined scenarios in his head, picturing their reunion, rehearsing the words he would say to her.
When he arrived at the hospital, he practically ran to her room. He hesitated for a moment outside the door, taking a deep breath to compose himself. He wanted to appear strong, confident, the man she had once loved.
Before he opened the door, he faltered, wondering if Levi would be in there. He took a deep breath and stepped inside. Lyse was alone in the room, sitting up in bed, her eyes wide and slightly unfocused. She looked fragile, but beautiful as ever.
"Brandon?" she whispered, her voice weak but filled with a hint of recognition.
The sound of his name on her lips sent a wave of happiness through him.
"Lyse," he said softly, approaching the bed. "I’m here."
He took her hand in his, gently squeezing it. Her skin felt cool to the touch.
"I... I am so glad you’re here," she said, her eyes searching his face. "I’ve been asking for you."
Brandon’s heart swelled. This was even better than he had hoped. She had been asking for him. It was a clear sign that she had forgiven him, that she still cared for him.
"I would have come sooner if I had known," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "I have been so worried about you."
"Why were you not here when I woke up?" Lyse’s brow furrowed slightly as she pouted. "What happened?" she asked, her voice laced with confusion. "Why am I in the hospital?"
Brandon hesitated for a moment. He didn’t want to upset her, not in her fragile state. But he was also confused by how she was acting.
"You... you were in an accident," he said gently. "You have been in a coma for a while."
Lyse’s eyes widened in shock. "A coma?" she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. "I... I don’t remember."
A strange feeling settled over Brandon. He looked closer at Lyse, noticing the confusion in her eyes, the way she seemed to be struggling to grasp the situation. It was then that he realized something was wrong. Something more than just the after effects of a coma.
"Lyse," he said softly, "do you... do you remember everything?"
Lyse looked at him, her eyes filled with confusion. "Of course, I remember," she said. "I remember... I remember you. You are my boyfriend, Brandon and we are going to get married."
The words struck Brandon like a thunderbolt. Boyfriend. Not husband. Not Levi. She thought that they were going to get married? That must mean that she didn’t remember their breakup. She didn’t remember Levi at all.
A wave of conflicting emotions washed over him, he now understood why she had called for him. Guilt, confusion, and then... a surge of something he couldn’t quite name. It was an opportunity, a chance to rewrite the past, to erase his mistakes.
He knew it was wrong. He knew he should tell her the truth. But the temptation was too strong. He couldn’t resist the chance to have her back, to have the love he had so carelessly thrown away. It felt like divine intervention, Levi did not deserve Lyse, he did and that was why she was asking for him now.
"Yes, Lyse," he said softly, his voice filled with false sincerity. "I am your boyfriend. And we are going to get married, I’m never going to leave your side again."
He took her hand again, holding it tightly in his. He looked into her eyes, his own filled with a feigned love and devotion.
"I love you so much, Lyse," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "More than anything in the world. And I promise you, I will never let you out of my sight again."
Lyse smiled, a weak but genuine smile that made his heart ache. "I love you too, Brandon," she whispered.
In that moment, Brandon made a decision. He would seize this opportunity, this second chance. He would keep the truth hidden, and he would do everything in his power to keep Lyse with him. He knew it was a selfish act, a betrayal of trust in its own way. But he couldn’t help himself. He had lost her once, and he was not going to lose her again. Even if it meant living a lie.
He just had to find out how long this memory loss was going to last. He would also have to ensure that it stayed long enough for him to find a way to have them tied together... forever.
