Chapter 105: My Maeve
Lyse nervously approached the nurse’s station, her heart pounding in her chest. She was worried and wanted to inquire about the man she had brought in, the stranger whose life she had inadvertently saved. As she opened her mouth to speak, a doctor, a stern-looking man with a tired expression, approached her.
"You are the one who brought the middle aged man in earlier today?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity.
Lyse nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "Yes, I was in the street when he collapsed in my path."
The doctor’s expression softened. "Well, you did a good thing. He has had a coronary but thanks to your quick action, he is going to be fine. We are doing everything we can for him."
Then he reached out his hand to shake Lyse. "I am Dr Caleb."
"My name is Lyse," Lyse said, bashful at the doctor’s praise. "And I was only doing what anyone else would have done."
"Not at all, you went out of your way to help a complete stranger and not many would have done that.." The doctor insisted.
"I was not able to see if he had a phone in his possession." Lyse said, "have you checked him and maybe reached out to his family or someone who can say who he is? Please how is he doing?"
"As a matter of fact, I have been able to reach someone and inform them. She should be arriving any moment from now." He said. "And I believe that he is going to make a full recovery."
Before Lyse could respond, a stunningly beautiful woman that felt familiar to Lyse stormed into the waiting room. "Ah, that must be her." Dr Caleb said.
The woman’s eyes which had been anxious and panicked suddenly narrowed at the sight of Lyse standing beside the doctor.
As she approached them, Dr Caleb started to introduce himself but the woman whose eyes which were now filled with rage as she glared Lyse did not seem to hear him.
"Who are you and why are you here?" she screamed, her voice echoing through the quiet hospital corridor. "You are the shameless hussy who has been sleeping with my fiancé aren’t you!"
Lyse was taken aback by the unexpected attack. She had no idea who this woman was or what she was talking about. "I don’t know what you are talking about," she stammered as she looked between the woman and the doctor, as if asking him to intervene.
The woman took another step forward, her expression vicious. "Are you denying that you were with Ken when he became unconscious and had to be taken to the hospital?" She demanded. "Are you going to deny that he spent the night with you?
"I have no idea what you are talking about, who this Ken you speak of is, a man staggered into my arms and I brought him here because I did not want him." Lyse who had regained her nerves said coldly.
She stood her ground and glared back at the woman as if daring her to do her worst. She found it ridiculous that this stranger was accusing her of such vile things when she had only tried to help.
Dr Caleb stepped forward, his voice firm. "Ma’am, I believe there has been a misunderstanding. This woman here saved your fiancé’s life. She found him collapsed on the street and brought him here. If it weren’t for her quick thinking, he might not have made it."
Even though the woman was no longer screaming. Her counternance remained haughty, as if she was in the right. Even at that instance, an apology was still hard because it meant admitting that she was wrong.
"Well," she mumbled, her voice barely audible. "I did not know that, I thought she was one of those shameless women who try to trap Ken in their bed."
"Well, I am not one of them!" Lyse snapped, her voice sharp.
"How was I supposed to know that?" The woman grumbled sulkily.
The doctor interrupted her. "You should be thanking her, not attacking her. She is a hero."
The woman rolled her eyes, which had not even a trace of remorse in them. She turned to Lyse.
"I apologize for my attitude, I was only worried about my fiancé." She said.
Lyse, though annoyed, accepted her apology.
"I guess since I am here, she does not need to remain." The woman announced.
Lyse who had felt a sense of responsibility for the man she had brought did not want to leave without knowing for sure that he was okay, was hesitant.
"I think that the patient would want to see who had saved his life, don’t you think?"
"There is no point in all that." The woman pointed out. "If she saved him for altruistic reasons then she should leave."
Then turning to Lyse, she asked slyly. "Or were you hoping for some sort or reward? I could just give that to you." After saying that, she reached into her purse as if to retrieve some money.
Lyse stiffened and stopped her, "I did not do what I did for a reward, I have no need for it." She said coldly then turned to Dr Caleb. "I will be on my way now, have a good day."
"Thank you so much, Lyse." Dr Caleb bid her goodbye.
Lyse ignored the smug look on the woman’s face and turned away, walking away from the emergency ward while the woman stared at her back until she was gone.
"Dr Caleb, the patient is waking up." A nurse ran out of a room to them.
The doctor ran into the room that the nurse had exited, with the woman following closely on his heels. They entered the room where the man that Lyse had saved lay covered in white sheets and was groaning.
The woman ran to the side of the bed and held his hand, calling his name tearfully. "Ken."
"My Maeve." He murmured, his voice weak.
