Chapter 14: Escaping Danger
Chapter 14: Escaping Danger
When Fabio woke up, Henwil also opened his eyes and threw off the blanket, going over to check on Fabio's condition.
At the same time, he untied the rope from Fabio's hand and also removed the rope tied around his own wrist.
The purpose of this rope was to alert Henwil when the other person had awakened.
Henwil felt he hadn't yet established trust with Fabio, so taking precautions was necessary.
Fortunately, Fabio was still groggy and didn't notice Henwil's little safety measure.
Henwil gave him some water to drink, then placed the soup pot over the campfire to heat.
After eating some food and drinking a large bowl of hot soup, Fabio sighed with emotion: "This is the first time I've known bean meat soup could be so delicious!"
Henwil smiled: "We'd rather have fewer of these kinds of realizations!"
After putting on his dried clothes, Fabio stood up and performed a formal noble salute to Henwil: "Henwil, you saved my life!
I swear by my family name that as long as I return alive, I will definitely repay you!"Henwil didn't act presumptuously and quickly returned the gesture: "Knight Fabio, you're too kind. We are comrades after all.
Although I'm still young and can't go to the battlefield (better to be upfront to avoid being used as cannon fodder), being able to overcome difficulties together with you, knight, is my honor!"
Fabio smiled and patted Henwil's shoulder: "Alright! Little guy, no need to be so formal with me. Tell me, where are we now?"
Henwil picked up a branch from the ground and began sketching a map: "Our approximate location is in this area, about ten kilometers southwest of Fire Eye Town."
Fabio looked at the rough map: "We've deviated from the main road, so enemies won't search in this direction. With this heavy snowfall, all our tracks have been erased.
It seems we can wait for a while, then head to Outpost Fourteen. There we can get horses, and it won't be long before we return to Plains City."
Henwil shook his head: "No! We need to leave this morning! Although we're both exhausted, we can't stop.
The Allied Forces will definitely destroy several outposts along the route - they must completely sever the supply line between Plains City and Kuka City.
With this heavy snow, even if the Allied Forces dispatch reinforcements, they'll need to reestablish supply lines.
This period will be enough time to trap those hundred thousand allied troops! So they absolutely must destroy the supply outposts.
They might not destroy all outposts, but they'll certainly eliminate the nearest ones. If we arrive too late, we could easily get trapped there!"
Fabio looked curiously at Henwil: "How did you figure all this out?"
Henwil's heart jumped, but his expression remained calm: "I don't have such ability - this is all what Mr. Kavizé told me!"
Fabio nodded slightly. He knew Kavizé was no ordinary person and didn't doubt this explanation at all.
Suddenly, he remembered something: "Speaking of Kavizé, where did he go? Why do you have his weapons?"
Henwil's eyes reddened: "Mr. Kavizé fell in battle. When I found him, he was already dead. I could only take his weapons - I couldn't even retrieve his body!"
This was the story Henwil had prepared in advance, rehearsing it several times and forcing himself to think about his parents from both lifetimes to achieve the slightly reddened eyes.
If he said he got separated from Kavizé, it would be hard to explain why he carried Kavizé's weapons.
These were personal weapons that wouldn't be entrusted to attendants.
So the only explanation was that he took them from Kavizé's body.
Now Fabio believed Henwil's story and gently patted his head, comforting him: "From now on, you'll follow me!"
Damn right!
I've been waiting for those words!
After packing their belongings, the two set out again through the heavy snow.
This time their clothing was properly suited for the conditions, with boots suitable for snow travel that wouldn't let snow inside.
Their clothes provided excellent wind resistance and warmth, eliminating concerns about hypothermia.
Though Fabio had been at death's door last night, today he was full of energy for the journey.
Although he wasn't at knight rank, his physical condition far exceeded ordinary people, otherwise he wouldn't have recovered so quickly.
This made Henwil quite envious - true knight rank would be like superhumans from his previous life.
Fabio had good stamina, but Henwil had snow travel experience, also from his previous life.
This way, the two traveled together without either falling behind.
Trudging through the deep snow, they walked for an entire day before reaching Outpost Fourteen.
Many defeated soldiers had already gathered here, but their situation was dire - whether they'd survive until tomorrow was unknown.
After resting only a few hours, Fabio and Henwil mounted two mules and continued their journey deep into the night.
Fabio could have requisitioned warhorses, but Henwil said warhorses were too delicate - in this stormy weather, speed wasn't needed, only endurance.
So the easy-to-care-for mules were most suitable.
Even slow horses were faster than walking. Before dawn, they reached the next outpost.
After briefly resting and switching to fresh mules, they continued their journey.
This time when they passed Outpost Twelve in the afternoon, they didn't even stop.
They didn't proceed to the next outpost either, instead going to a hiding spot Kavizé had left behind to rest for the night and avoid Allied pursuit.
The result was favorable - when they set out the next day, the Allied Forces still hadn't reached this area.
Clearly, the severe weather had significantly impacted the Allied Forces' advance.
Finally, Henwil and Fabio returned to Plains City after a dangerous but ultimately safe journey.
Afterward, Fabio told Henwil they had narrowly avoided subsequent Allied pursuit.
If they had stayed slightly longer at the first hiding spot, they definitely wouldn't have escaped.
So the two had essentially escaped death!
Several days later, the Silent Battleaxe Legion's combat losses had been tallied.
Of the seven-thousand-plus legion, fewer than a thousand had confirmed returns.
Less than one-fifth of the nobles and officers had made it back.
By this calculation, the Silent Battleaxe Legion was basically existing in name only.
But the Allied Forces didn't report such heavy losses in their battle reports - they only stated slightly over a thousand deaths, with the rest listed as missing.
Partly for appearance's sake.
Partly to reduce costs - death benefits were quite high, while missing personnel didn't require such substantial settlement fees.
Henwil understood this perfectly, but it didn't concern him.
His main focus now was eating well and working hard to grow his body.
At the same time, he needed to consider what he should do next.
