Chapter 130 - 128: Broke Up
Chapter 130 - 128: Broke Up
Eric had put it rather tactfully.
Silas Grant’s meaning was clear. He wouldn’t be going to Jynsia for a while, and he didn’t want her coming to Portia again.
In the meantime, there was no need for them to stay in contact.
[Host?]
[Host!]
Mia Grant snapped back to reality.
The plane had already taken off, and the pressure in her ears was becoming more noticeable. She pinched her earlobes and looked around.
This was the lounge of a private jet, and she was the only one there.
A familiar overcoat was hanging nearby. It was Kian Keller’s.
Taking a deep breath, Mia Grant lay back down.
She asked the System, "What do you want me to do now?"
[No new tasks have been assigned.]
"Then why did you call me? Didn’t you see I was sleeping?"
[System has detected that Host’s spirits are low. Does Host require assistance?]
"..." Mia Grant slowly opened her eyes. "Since when did you become so human-like?"
[After a full upgrade.]
The System began to earnestly explain its new updates, and Mia Grant couldn’t help but laugh.
Sensing the shift in her emotions, the System paused. [So, is Host sad because of Silas Grant?]
Mia Grant blinked. After a long moment, she said, "No."
[Is it really not because you were broken up with?]
"..."
Hearing the phrase "broken up with," Mia Grant’s mouth twitched violently. "Watch your wording!"
The System made a confused sound. It couldn’t quite comprehend human emotions; they were far too complex for it.
"I was just thinking that his asking me to draw a line between us for now means he’s about to make a move on the old man."
[Isn’t that a good thing? But Host is still very sad.]
Mia Grant was at a loss for words. "You heard what Silas Grant’s secretary said. The old man is harder to kill than we thought. He’ll definitely have to plan this out carefully."
"From my perspective, it’s a simple matter of a swift strike and it’s over. But from his perspective, there’s the company, the family, the public... If he acts rashly without handling these things first, he’ll definitely stir up trouble."
"So what I’m worried about is, what if something happens to him during this time? What about my mission?"
The System seemed to regard her with a mix of belief and disbelief. [...That makes sense.]
’You’d better be worried about the mission’s progress.’
Rubbing her nose sheepishly, Mia Grant pulled the blanket up higher, escaping from reality. "You are dismissed. We wish to rest."
By the time the plane landed in Jynsia, Mia Grant’s fever had broken.
Mia Grant didn’t see Kian Keller after getting off the plane.
According to Hayes Hughes, something came up with the Keller Family, so he had to leave first.
Mia Grant didn’t think much of it.
On the way back, Hayes Hughes took her to his workplace for a full check-up.
Only after confirming she was fine did Hayes Hughes take her back to school.
The entire way, he kept reminding her of things to watch out for.
Mia Grant’s head was starting to hurt from listening, but she didn’t dare to argue.
Of course, what Hayes Hughes was concerned about wasn’t the fever, but the mysterious bout of coughing up blood she’d had a couple of days ago for which they couldn’t find a cause.
Hayes Hughes’s car drove right up to her dormitory building.
Mia Grant slowly unbuckled her seatbelt. Hayes Hughes had already gotten out, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door for her.
He helped her out of the car, then retrieved a pile of things from the back seat.
Snacks, medicine, and some clothes.
She had no idea when he had prepared all this; it was like a magic treasure chest.
"This is a lot of stuff. I’ll walk you up."
Mia Grant nodded.
At the elevators, she pressed the button while introducing her roommates to Hayes Hughes.
"I just checked my messages. It looks like they’re all in the dorm room."
"Perfect. The roasted chestnuts are still warm. You can share them with everyone. Next time, if you want anything..."
"Hayes?" A voice cut in from the side.
Mia Grant and Hayes Hughes turned their heads in unison to see Serena Grant walking in from outside.
A dark look flashed in Mia Grant’s eyes. As reluctant as she was, she still had to greet her.
Serena Grant glanced at her, not looking particularly eager to talk to her either.
But with Hayes Hughes present, she was forced to ask, "Are you feeling okay? Mom and I were planning to visit you tomorrow."
"..." Mia Grant desperately wanted to roll her eyes but managed to hold back.
"Thank you for your concern, sis. I’m fine." She forced a smile.
Serena Grant couldn’t care less if she lived or died. Her gaze shifted to Hayes Hughes beside them. "Hayes, are you free tonight? Mom said she’d like to invite you over for dinner."
The door of the elevator opposite them opened. Mia Grant, not listening to what the two cousins were discussing, stepped inside first.
She said nothing, not even giving Hayes Hughes a single glance from beginning to end.
He followed her in.
"I have a surgery tonight, so it’s not convenient." Hayes Hughes pressed the button for their floor. "I’ll call my aunt later to explain personally."
Serena Grant looked like she wanted to say more but could only watch as the elevator doors closed.
Inside the elevator, there was a long silence.
Hayes Hughes’s chest rose and fell slightly. "About last time..."
"Hayes, we’re here."
Hayes Hughes’s voice stopped abruptly.
He stared at the smile on her face, then his own lips curved. The smile that spread across his face instantly drowned out the flicker of heartache he’d unconsciously revealed. "Let’s go."
The topic was dropped.
’Mia Grant didn’t actually know what he wanted to say. Was he going to plead someone’s case, or was he on her side...’
’Whatever it was, she didn’t want to hear it right now.’
She had a visceral aversion to recalling what happened last time.
’She thought she was strong enough. It was just public humiliation, not like she was streaking naked.’
’It wasn’t the first time she’d been in a situation like this...’
’But in the end... she was still so fragile.’
When Hayes Hughes came down from the dormitory, he was surprised to find Serena Grant still on the first floor.
"Hayes." Serena Grant immediately went up to him when she saw him.
Hayes Hughes sighed softly. "I really don’t have time. I’ll visit my aunt another day when I’m free."
Serena Grant hurried after him, explaining, "Mom wanted to see you this time because it has something to do with Mia Grant."
"I heard it’s about her marriage."
Hayes Hughes looked resigned. "Hasn’t her engagement to Yates Donovan already been called off?"
"It’s not with Yates Donovan." Serena Grant watched his expression, cautiously uttering a different name.
Hayes Hughes’s eyelashes trembled.
"What?!"
Hearing what the System said, Mia Grant nearly rolled off the top bunk.
"Kitty?"
The other girls in the dorm were startled by her outburst. "Kitty, what’s wrong?"
A few seconds later, the curtain of the top bunk was pulled aside. Mia Grant poked her head out and forced a smile. "It’s nothing. I just had a nightmare. You guys carry on, don’t mind me."
The curtain was drawn again, plunging the top bunk into darkness.
Clutching her blanket, Mia Grant repeatedly confirmed with the System, "Who did you just say I’m getting engaged to?"
[The Sinclair Family.]
"..."
Mia Grant’s mouth twitched. "Are you sure it’s not Yates Donovan or Kian Keller?"
[Nope. I heard the Sinclair Family proposed it, and the Grant Family agreed without hesitation.]
"But... why?"
Mia Grant couldn’t figure it out. The Sinclair Family hadn’t even been on her list of potential engagement candidates.
Besides, she had another question—
"The Sinclair Family has two brothers. Which one am I engaged to?"
