Chapter 124 - 122: Host, Please Prepare for Battle
Chapter 124 - 122: Host, Please Prepare for Battle
Eric went downstairs to pass on the message.
But after looking all over the ground floor, he couldn’t find Yates Donovan.
He asked security, but they also said they hadn’t seen any suspicious individuals near the company.
’That’s strange.’
With no other choice, he could only head back up since he couldn’t find him. He told security to keep a special eye out and to call him immediately if they saw Yates Donovan.
But just as he was seeing the doctor into the elevator, before he even had a chance to remind him not to say anything he shouldn’t, the phone on his desk rang.
It was security. They said someone was causing a scene downstairs, and the main culprit was the very person he’d mentioned: Yates Donovan.
"How many people did he bring?" Eric frantically told someone to call the elevator; he was heading down right away.
"You guys hold them back. Whatever you do, don’t let this blow up. It’ll be bad if the media gets wind of it."
"Yes, sir." The security guard paused, then suddenly added, "He didn’t bring many people. Just two."
Eric breathed a sigh of relief. "Only two people? Then what are you panicking about...?"
"Because I recognize both of them."
Eric’s brow twitched. ’If even the security guards find them familiar, then they can’t be Yates Donovan’s bodyguards...’
Before he could ask, a voice came through the phone: "It’s the Second Young Master and Mr. Keller."
...
’It’s over.’
Eric’s vision went dark.
He was no longer in a hurry to go down. He instructed the security department not to make any rash moves, then hung up and bolted into the office.
Yates Donovan alone was trouble enough.
Add the Second Young Master and Mr. Keller to the mix... Hiss.
Although the Second Young Master wasn’t difficult, he wasn’t easy to get rid of either. And that was to say nothing of the one from the Keller family.
Inside the lounge, Mia Grant was pressed against the door, trying her best to eavesdrop.
She didn’t know if the soundproofing was too good or if the people outside were deliberately keeping their voices down, but she listened for ages and heard nothing.
’My phone’s broken again.’
’I don’t dare go out right now.’
Silas Grant had ostensibly told her to come in and get some clothes, but in reality, he was telling her to stay put in the lounge and not come out.
’I don’t want to deal with that guy named Adler anyway, but I’m just so curious about what they’re talking about.’
’Knowing what a petty guy Adler is, he’s probably badmouthing me behind my back.’
[Host.]
Mia Grant was still pressed against the door eavesdropping when the system’s voice suddenly rang out, scaring her so badly she nearly fell over.
Before she could get angry, she heard the system’s cold, mechanical voice again: [Warning. The system has detected the approach of multiple male leads.]
[Please prepare for battle, Host.]
...
"What?" Mia Grant steadied herself and looked around. Seeing the window behind her, she rushed over, pushed it open, and peered into the distance.
The top floor was too high up. She squinted for a long time. "Who’s here?"
She only knew that Yates Donovan was downstairs.
But the system used the plural form.
[Unable to identify specific individuals at this time. Please prepare for battle, Host.]
The system repeated.
Mia Grant took a breath. ’I knew I shouldn’t have counted on it.’
’But prepare for battle? How am I supposed to do that?’
’The sky is falling!’
’One of them is hard enough to handle. If two more show up, I might as well get on my knees and beg for forgiveness.’
’But if they all came...’
’I should probably just jump out the window.’
—
In the lounge, Mia Grant was pacing anxiously.
Outside, Silas Grant’s brow twitched at the news, and the smile on his lips widened. "Then please invite them up for a visit."
Eric’s eyelid twitched violently. Not daring to object, he hurried down to greet them.
Once Eric was gone, Simon Adler withdrew his gaze. He watched Silas Grant tap the ash from his cigarette, puzzled. "Why would those guys come looking for you for no reason? They can’t possibly be here to check on you, can they?"
"Especially that damn Keller. He’s limping around on his own leg, injured worse than you are. He’s suddenly grown a conscience and come to offer you condolences?"
As he spoke, he glanced at the closed lounge door and finally understood. "Ah, that explains it."
Simon Adler was in no mood to watch the drama unfold; he just found it troublesome.
"Don’t get into a fight later. It won’t look good if word gets out. The media these days is ruthless; they’ll write anything for a buck."
"If you guys fight now, you won’t even have to wait until tomorrow morning. The Hong Kong tabloids will be all over it tonight."
"Perfect." Silas Grant stubbed out his cigarette and slowly brushed a speck of ash from his pants. "I don’t mind giving them some more juicy material."
"What could be more explosive than a few grown men fighting for affection?"
Simon Adler found that he could no longer keep up with his train of thought.
It was like he couldn’t comprehend the way these madmen thought at all.
The man curled his lip. "Announcing our engagement."
...
Those three words left Simon Adler speechless.
After a long moment, the cigarette in his hand burned down quickly, searing his fingers. That snapped him back to his senses, and he crushed it out.
After a brief exchange of looks, he stood up. "I’ll go have a word with the PR department."
Silas Grant wasn’t joking. If he dared to say it, he would dare to do it.
It was better to save his energy for dealing with the media and the board of directors than to waste his breath trying to reason with him here.
Arguing with him was useless anyway—a waste of breath.
A certain someone showed no intention of stopping him. In fact, as he stood up, Silas threw a rather gratified comment his way: "Thanks for your hard work."
...
’Not hard work. A hard life.’
’How infuriating.’
By the elevators, Simon Adler was waiting.
He stared at his reflection in the elevator doors, rubbing his burnt fingers as he quietly sorted through his thoughts.
Actually, before he had met Mia Grant, the Old Master had summoned him once.
It wasn’t explicitly about Silas and Mia Grant. Ostensibly, he had just been invited over for a meal.
But throughout the dinner, he was being warned off.
Back then, he had thought she was just some young girl. Why would the Old Master pay her so much attention, even to the point of painstakingly plotting to get rid of her?
’So what if Silas Grant really liked her?’
’It would be a fleeting fancy at most.’
But now, he realized he was wrong.
That old fox, Silas Grant, had truly fallen for it.
And it seemed Silas himself hadn’t even realized the severity of the situation.
The elevator doors opened. Just as Simon Adler was about to step inside, the doors of the adjacent elevator opened as well.
Few people ever came up to the top floor.
He glanced over casually and met Yates Donovan’s playful gaze.
"Well, well." Upon seeing him, the other man greeted him enthusiastically. "We meet again, Mr. Adler."
’You don’t hit a smiling man.’
Simon Adler gave a slight nod. Then, he bypassed the man named Keller and greeted Hayes Hughes. "Why haven’t you returned to Jynsia? Isn’t the hospital busy?"
"I’m heading back tonight." Hayes Hughes’s gaze lingered on him for a few seconds before he changed direction, giving him a meaningful look.
Kian Keller didn’t even glance their way. It wasn’t his first time here; leaning on his cane, he strode toward Silas Grant’s office with practiced ease.
Yates Donovan smirked at them, then shoved his hands in his pockets and leisurely followed Kian Keller. "Hey, Keller, wait for me... You’re walking so fast for a guy with a lame leg."
The office door was thrown open with force.
Mia Grant, who had just stepped out of the lounge, instantly leaped up from the sofa.
Kian Keller’s gaze lingered on her. After confirming she was all right, his chest heaved once, and only then did he slow his pace.
Yates Donovan entered and also quickly looked for Mia Grant.
The moment his eyes fell upon that figure, the smile on his lips froze.
