Chapter 116 - 114: She Is My Master
"..."
Mia Grant blinked, hesitantly taking out the gun. The next second, Yates Donovan snatched it from her hand.
"Hey—" Her hand instinctively reached for it. He shot her a glare that stopped her cold. "You’re not scared, holding this?"
Mia Grant was at a loss for words, trying to argue, "A little, but..."
"But nothing." Yates Donovan unloaded the magazine and saw it was actually full.
He tutted, muttering "psycho" under his breath. It was unclear who he was cursing.
Normally, Mia Grant would have cursed right back at him.
Today, she really didn’t dare to make a move.
After dismantling the gun and tossing it aside, Yates Donovan held out his hand again. "And the thing that old stone-face gave you?"
It took her a moment to realize who he was talking about. Then she pulled out the bullets and handed them over.
Yates Donovan’s expression finally softened. He smiled and ruffled her hair like he was petting a puppy. "Good girl~"
"..."
Mia Grant slapped his hand away. "But you gave me a knife."
"How is that the same?" Yates Donovan scanned her face. "Aren’t you usually pretty smart? What’s wrong with your brain now? Did he kiss you until you were oxygen-deprived?"
Mia Grant choked.
"Can you please talk properly?"
Teased like this, she scratched her cheek in embarrassment.
"Oh, look at you, all shy now? Who was it just now, in front of all those people, kissing so passionately you couldn’t be pulled apart? There was even a fucking trail of saliva..."
"Hiss."
Before he could finish, she had given his thigh a vicious pinch.
"What, I’m not allowed to talk about it now?"
Mia Grant stared at him, her face cold.
Yates Donovan leaned back in his seat, propping his head up with one hand. He watched her for a long while before finally saying, "Yes, he meant well. A gun is indeed much more useful than a knife."
His expression suddenly darkened. "But, do you want to die?"
"..."
Mia Grant froze.
Seeing the confusion in her eyes, Yates Donovan gave a sardonic laugh and answered for her, "You don’t."
"You want to live more than anyone."
"What’s the difference between you taking this thing now and cutting off all your own escape routes?"
"Have you ever thought about how using a gun and using a knife are fundamentally different?"
"A knife can still be considered self-defense. How do you plan to explain a gun?"
"With that timid little heart of yours, would you even dare to fire it? You probably don’t even know how to load the magazine, do you?"
"..."
"And we’re in Portia. Besides Silas Grant, if anyone gets a hold of something on you, forget about me—even Kian Keller wouldn’t be able to get you out."
She asked subconsciously, "So it would be okay in Jynsia? Isn’t Jynsia more dangerous?"
"It is more dangerous. But I can cover for you."
"You?" Mia Grant looked skeptical. "How would you handle it?"
’The Donovan Family is still run by Yates Donovan’s second uncle right now. Yates doesn’t have any real power. If I got into trouble, I’d be lucky if he could just visit me on a schedule to bring some food and offer condolences.’
’Relying on him would be even less useful than relying on Kian Keller.’
"I can take the blame for you."
"..." Mia Grant’s breath caught. She lifted her head, her reaction slow.
"What... what did you say?"
His tone was casual. "In Jynsia, I can erase all traces of your actions and take the blame for you."
"And don’t tell me Kian Keller could help you too. Hah. Let me tell you something, Mia Grant."
"In this world, I’m the only one who would dare to do that."
"If you don’t believe me, we can test it."
"..."
After a moment, Yates Donovan avoided her burning gaze and looked away. "I’m confiscating the gun. You’re not allowed to touch this kind of thing again. This is your only warning, got it?"
"He’s a half-cripple with a messed-up head. Don’t be a fool along with him."
After a long silence, Mia Grant gave a weak "Oh."
—
Back at Yates Donovan’s place, Mia Grant glanced out the window. "Is there no one outside anymore?"
"They left a long time ago."
"They’re gone?"
"I spoke with that guy, Adler, on the phone."
"When?" Mia Grant hurried after him.
In the dining room, Yates Donovan sat down, looking up to signal for her to eat. "On my way to find you."
"What did he say? Is he a friend or an enemy?"
"Hard to say." Yates Donovan said, "To you, he’s definitely an enemy. To Silas Grant, he’s naturally a friend."
Mia Grant tried to process that. After a pause, she seemed to understand something. "He wants to use me... to trade for my brother with the old man?"
With a soft SNAP, Yates Donovan snapped his fingers.
"You guessed it."
Mia Grant frowned, not feeling any more at ease because of it.
"Don’t dwell on it. Eat first."
"Has he alerted the old man yet?"
"Not yet. He hasn’t given up on his plan." Yates Donovan pushed a pair of chopsticks into her hand. "Try this roast goose. I had someone special..."
"If I don’t show up, will the old man really keep my brother locked up forever?"
"What else did he tell you?"
Yates Donovan glanced at her and gave a cheeky grin. "I’ll tell you after you finish eating."
Mia Grant opened her mouth to argue, but the next second, a spoonful of steamed egg custard was stuffed into it.
"Be good. Swallow."
"..."
Mia Grant shot him a glare and did as she was told.
After she finished eating, she pestered him with questions relentlessly.
Annoyed by her chatter, Yates Donovan clamped a hand over her mouth. "Say one more word and I’ll kiss you."
She bit his hand. Yates Donovan laughed and leaned down. "Bite me again, and I’ll still kiss you."
Only then did she quiet down.
After some time, the man’s relaxed voice sounded in the living room. "Don’t worry, it’ll be fine."
Mia Grant looked up.
After a pause, she raised her hand.
Leaning back on the sofa, Yates Donovan said, "No."
She frowned and raised it higher.
"Hold it in."
This time, she stuck her hand right in front of his face. Yates Donovan turned his head, pretending not to see, but she followed, pushing her hand into his line of sight.
Yates Donovan: "One sentence."
Mia Grant took a deep breath. "But isn’t my brother’s position at the company really precarious right now if he doesn’t show up tomorrow who’s going to take charge rely on that Adler guy?"
It really was one sentence, all without a single breath.
"The upper management at the Hughes Corp have been eyeing Silas Grant’s position like tigers for years, but Silas Grant is no pushover. You really think just anyone can walk all over him?"
"Just you wait and see. The old man will release him tomorrow. He won’t let Silas Grant be absent."
"..." Mia Grant raised her hand.
"Speak."
"Can that Adler guy contact my brother?"
"What are you planning?" Yates Donovan looked over at her.
"I want to call my brother. I need to make sure he’s okay. Or... take me to see him tomorrow."
"I thought you weren’t going to cooperate with that Adler guy."
"I suspected he was in cahoots with the old man at the time. Since he’s also doing this for my brother, I guess you could say he’s one of the good guys, reluctantly."
「One hour later.」
A sound came from outside the door. Mr. Payne announced that a guest had arrived.
Mia Grant immediately sat up straight.
Two minutes later, Mr. Payne led a man in.
The man greeted Yates Donovan, and then his gaze fell on her, his eyes holding a trace of contempt.
Mia Grant’s lips curled into a smile. "If you look at me like that again, I’ll have him gouge your eyes out."
"..."
Simon Adler turned to look at Yates Donovan. The latter was leaning back on the sofa, laughing heartlessly. Seeing Adler’s look, he gave a helpless shrug.
"Don’t ask me. She’s my master. Since she said so, I have no choice but to obey."
