Chapter 274 : Relatives Arrive
Chapter 274 : Relatives Arrive
Lin Nan's eldest uncle was already nearly fifty years old.
He was Wu Jiaming's cousin's father. Years ago, he and Eldest Aunt had illegally emigrated abroad together. About ten years ago, they had another cousin abroad, thus obtaining a green card and status.
Eldest Uncle only returned around New Year each year. When he returned this year, without exception, he was quarantined for fourteen days, only being released today.
Mother had already gone downstairs to chat with them, but Lin Nan still stood somewhat timidly at the corner of the first-floor stairway, peeking toward the hall from the stairs.
There were quite a few people in the living room at the moment: Wu Jiaming's family of four, Eldest Aunt, Grandfather and Grandmother, plus Mother and her cousin.
Lin Nan immediately became even more cowardly. She already didn't like this kind of New Year visiting scene, and now it was her first time appearing as a daughter before the eldest uncle she wasn't very familiar with.
"Nan Nan is very beautiful now."
Someone brought up Lin Nan, and the hall began discussing the issue of Lin Nan's congenital deformity.
No one raised any confusion. After all, Lin Nan had suddenly become female, and she had all the functions a female should have. Even her chromosomes were XX. Besides congenital deformity, the only other explanation was magic.
This group naturally couldn't consider the latter.
"Back then, wasn't Nan Nan premature and put in an incubator? The doctors weren't thorough with their examinations back then. If they'd known earlier that Nan Nan was a girl, she wouldn't have had to suffer so much."
So the topic turned to criticizing the doctor's work errors. Each person was filled with righteous indignation. If it weren't already something from over ten years ago, judging by their momentum, they probably would have marched to the hospital.
After listening from the stairs for over ten minutes, Lin Nan finally couldn't stay put any longer.
If she let them continue talking like this, they might really go to the hospital to check the original reports.
She walked down the stairs somewhat awkwardly, head lowered as she came to Mother's side, not daring to look up at those relatives.
Her arrival instantly made the atmosphere in the hall freeze for a moment. After a long while, Lin Nan's eldest aunt finally came forward, personally taking some walnuts she'd cracked herself and stuffing them into Lin Nan's mouth.
Wow, Lin Nan had only met this eldest aunt a few times and didn't know how to refuse, so she opened her mouth and ate them, then shyly thanked her in a low voice: "Thank you, Auntie."
Eldest Aunt looked Lin Nan's face up and down, then looked down at her increasingly swelling chest.
"So well-behaved. I always felt something was strange when I saw you before. Turns out you were a girl all along. So pretty."
"Right? If my Nan Nan hadn't been raised as a boy by me for over ten years, boys seeing her now definitely wouldn't be able to walk away." Mother smiled as she took Lin Nan's arm.
The several people present were all sizing up Lin Nan's appearance. That eldest aunt had already seen her before and kept her head down, concentrating on eating sunflower seeds.
Eldest Uncle looked her over but didn't show any expression of rejection, only expressionlessly handing out a red envelope: "Here, your New Year's money."
Last year he had also given Lin Nan New Year's money, but unfortunately it was immediately taken by Lin Nan's mom.
"Thank you, Eldest Uncle."
Lin Nan's gaze at Eldest Uncle immediately became much warmer.
Perhaps because the subject herself had arrived on the scene, the group didn't continue their previous topic. Eldest Uncle talked about his idea of taking Wu Jiaming abroad.
She couldn't understand the dialect very well, so she turned her gaze to the cousin who had returned with Eldest Uncle.
This cousin was only about ten years old and was currently nestled in Wu Jiaming's arms, the siblings whispering to each other about something.
Liu Xinyi had no particularly deep relationship with anyone present. She'd moved a small stool by herself to sit at the front door, head lowered playing games.
"Nan Nan now looks almost exactly like you did when you were young." Aunt sat on Lin Nan's left side, speaking in low tones with Mother on the right: "Back then, the people chasing after you lined up all the way outside the village. If you hadn't been dazzled by so many choices, you wouldn't have ended up with that kind of man."
"What happened in the past should stay in the past." Mother was quite open-minded about it, looking at Lin Nan caught in the middle with a face full of affection: "As long as Lin Nan can be happy in the future."
Lin Nan was quite unaccustomed to this kind of gaze from Mother. After all, it had only been a few months since they'd resolved their estrangement. For nearly twenty years before that, they'd had very little communication.
Eldest Aunt reached out to pinch Lin Nan's face. She could only endure it without a sound, but heard Aunt make a big fuss as she leaned in closer: "You're not wearing makeup? How is your skin this good? When I saw you last year, your face was still full of acne."
"Uh... I used the right skincare products?" Lin Nan explained guiltily, only feeling her face hurt a bit.
Although Aunt hadn't used much force, her face had always been quite delicate.
"If Nan Nan learned how to do makeup, she'd definitely be at the level of TV stars."
"No way, my Nan Nan is much prettier than those stars."
Lin Nan took a deep breath, really unable to bear it anymore. She quickly retreated two steps to escape Mother and Aunt: "I'm going to play with Xinyi."
Without waiting for their agreement, she hurriedly went over to Liu Xinyi sitting by the door.
However, this eldest aunt really didn't seem to reject her at all. That eldest uncle was the same. Although he wasn't close to Lin Nan, his face didn't show much rejection either. On the contrary, he'd even given her a red envelope.
Could it be that having stayed abroad for so long, his thinking was more open compared to Eldest Aunt, who almost never left the village or town?
Sitting beside Liu Xinyi, Lin Nan quickly tore open the red envelope to take a look, but was disappointed to discover it was only two hundred yuan.
Although having money was already pretty good, she'd thought that Eldest Uncle returning from overseas would give a bit more. Turned out it was even less than what Little Uncle gave.
"Where's Little Uncle?" Lin Nan curiously asked Liu Xinyi.
She looked around for a long time but didn't see Wu Guodong's figure.
"I think he went out to buy cigarettes? Everyone in this room is a chain smoker. He needs to get some more with how fast they ran through a pack." Liu Xinyi pulled out a cigarette and showed it off proudly to Lin Nan: "Look, Aunt gave me this cigarette!"
"Aunt..." Lin Nan suddenly thought of Liu Xuefei. If she really became her little uncle's wife, Lin Nan really couldn't bring herself to call her that.
After all, she wasn't much older than herself.
"Yeah, Aunt even has a little tiger tattoo on her shoulder, and her strength is amazing. Even Jiaming can't beat her at arm wrestling." Liu Xinyi looked envious: "I want to get a tattoo too."
"Easy, just draw a 正 character on your thigh. Drawing a few more would look even better." (TN: It’s the Chinese tally mark.)
Liu Xinyi rolled her eyes at Lin Nan, but saw Wu Guodong returning from outside with a carton of cigarettes. She immediately abandoned Lin Nan to rush forward, wanting to get a pack of cigarettes too.
Lin Nan sighed gloomily. Glancing at Mother's side, she saw they had already taken out mahjong and started playing.
Looking at that little cousin again, she couldn't remember her name at all, only thinking she was chubby and quite cute.
The sudden arrival of so many unfamiliar relatives put Lin Nan under great stress.
