Chapter 215 : Mountain Climbing

The rural night had long lost the starry sky of years past.

Accompanied by dogs barking and cats meowing, Lin Nan walked to the balcony, yawning and stretching, then shivered from the suddenly cooler air, but quickly returned to normal.

The temperature seemed to have dropped quite a bit. She took out her phone to check and found the temperature had dropped to ten degrees.

She was only wearing thin pajamas, but she didn't really feel the cold. Magic at least meant she wouldn't easily catch cold or get sick anymore.

She changed into a black high-necked sweater, put on a coat, and wrapped a scarf around herself. Although Lin Nan wasn't sensitive to temperature, she still had to act afraid of the cold and wear thick clothing, otherwise she would definitely be nagged by grandfather and mother.

This outfit on a standard-figured, above-average-looking male would mostly appear handsome, but on Lin Nan it looked like women's clothing no matter how you looked at it.

Even though it covered her figure and the scarf blocked half her face, she still radiated a girl's temperament from within.

Lin Nan was used to looking like she was wearing women's clothing no matter what she wore. After washing up in the bathroom, she forced herself to perk up and went downstairs.

Grandfather, cousin, and little uncle were already sitting at the round table in the hall eating breakfast. When grandfather saw her coming down slowly, he frowned and scolded, "Getting out of bed takes half an hour! Hurry up and eat, there are oyster pancakes you like."

Lin Nan sat at the table with lifeless dead-fish eyes, yawning continuously.

It looks like grandfather has completely accepted me.

His attitude seemed a bit harsh, but he spoke to grandmother in the same tone.

Taking a bite of the oyster pancake, Lin Nan discovered that this pancake was almost entirely filled with oysters. She looked up at grandfather with some surprise.

Only then did he continue explaining with a stern face: "I bought a pound of oysters myself and asked the boss to add them."

Lin Nan was startled. Grandfather had never been this considerate toward her before.

Wu Jiaming beside her said sarcastically with jealousy: "We're benefiting from your favor, otherwise we wouldn't get to eat such good oyster pancakes."

He was clearly the grandson, so why was Lin Nan, this granddaughter... granddaughter getting more attention?

Wu Guodong silently rolled his eyes. He, the son, hadn't even spoken yet, okay?

Both being male, the two didn't pay much attention to grandfather's differential treatment. After eating simply, they followed grandfather's footsteps out the door.

Behind grandfather's house was a mountain that was fairly famous locally. The peak was basically a recreational center for middle-aged and elderly people, with all kinds of ball courts and exercise facilities.

To go up the mountain normally, you should take the stairs built on the other side all the way up, but grandfather led several people to the old mountain path behind the small villa.

The mountain path was just a small trail with vague traces of steps, but it had long fallen into disrepair. Lin Nan and Wu Jiaming used to follow Wu Guodong frequently through this small path to play in the back mountain when they were children.

The sky was just getting light. It seemed like there had been a light rain last night, making the mountain path somewhat muddy. The air in the mountains was fresh and pleasant, but Lin Nan still preferred the city.

At least living in the city, she wouldn't have to climb mountains early in the morning.

Lin Nan followed behind the others with little enthusiasm, looking around in all directions.

Although it had been over ten years since the last time she walked this path, there were almost no changes here, just a few new graves added around the mountain path.

This mountain originally seemed to be just a burial mountain. Lin Nan didn't know why locals would choose this place as an activity center for middle-aged and elderly people. It couldn't be to let them adapt to the environment in advance, could it?

Having seen many graves in this mountain since childhood, Lin Nan now found these burial mounds somewhat frightening, gloomy as if there really were ghosts lurking in the dense forest beside her.

It seemed like something fearsome was watching her from behind, making Lin Nan unconsciously quicken her pace to catch up with little uncle ahead.

Ever since coming into contact with magic, she felt that there might really be ghosts in this world.

She, who at most used to be afraid of the dark, inexplicably began to fear ghosts too.

"Walk slower, don't slip." Wu Guodong turned back to look at Lin Nan who had walked beside him. Seeing her somewhat nervous expression, he teased, "You're not afraid of graves, are you?"

Lin Nan nervously hid behind him.

"We used to rave on grave mounds and I never saw you afraid before." He pointed to a large cemetery not far away. "Remember? We used to climb over the wall to get in, but you couldn't climb out and cried inside."

Lin Nan naturally shook her head at this dark history: "I don't remember, I was still young then, wasn't I?"

Grandfather walking at the front suddenly stopped. Lin Nan was startled and followed his gaze to look at a new grave beside the mountain path.

"Your great-great-grandfather, he passed away last month, just one year short of being exactly one hundred years old." Wu Guodong explained. "During that time, didn't you just learn about your body condition? Your mom and I thought it would be better not to trouble you with this matter."

"Mm."

Lin Nan didn't have a deep impression of great-great-grandfather either. He was a deaf and stubborn old man who, despite being so old he could barely take care of himself, refused to move to grandfather's house and always failed to remember Lin Nan and other youngsters.

With great-great-grandfather gone, great-great-grandmother would be living alone. Grandfather carefully walked down from the mountain path to the graveside to clear some fallen leaves and debris from on top.

"Don't come down, it's slippery." Seeing the others also planning to go down, grandfather quickly stopped them.

Lin Nan and the others could only stand on the mountain path, waiting for grandfather to finish his remembrance.

She felt somewhat bored, yawning as she looked toward the increasingly bright sky. Then she turned her head and saw Wu Jiaming staring straight at her.

She was startled and asked, "What's wrong?"

"Just thinking about how the male cousin I used to bathe with became a female cousin." Wu Jiaming said with a smile. "What would the other male cousins' reactions be if they knew?"

"I don't consider such things."

Wu Guodong imagined it and teased, "Isn't that Ji Xinyi lesbian? She might take a fancy to you, you'd better be careful. She'll definitely arrange to sleep in the same room as you."

"Female cousin said she had a girlfriend last year, and I can just sleep on the floor."
