Chapter 378 - 377: The Ghost Woman Is a Bit Silly

Chapter 378 - 377: The Ghost Woman Is a Bit Silly

Seeing this, Beisitian was no longer even a bit afraid, only full of speechlessness, and moreover, felt that this ’female ghost’ was somewhat silly!Beisitian remained silent, just watching the ’female ghost’ kick the stool three times. She certainly wasn’t planning to go out, wanting to see how many more times she could kick it.

However, she was quite amazed; the female ghost, with the white silk tightened around her waist, managed to keep balanced while hanging in the air. How did she do that?

After kicking it the third time, the ’female ghost’ realized there was still no reaction from inside the room. She simply yanked off the white silk, placed her hands on her hips, and faced Beisitian’s room, seemingly very angry.

The ’female ghost’ didn’t continue further. She quietly placed the stool under the windowsill, put away the white silk, and walked towards the northwest corner of the courtyard, never to appear again.

Beisitian didn’t dare go back to sleep. Even though the ’female ghost’ was silly, her appearance was quite mysterious. Neither did she enter by prying open the door nor by climbing over the wall, and her sudden disappearance in the courtyard’s northwest corner was enough to be terrifying.

Beisitian waited until dawn to open her door and go out. The talisman powder in the living room remained untouched, indicating that the ’female ghost’ hadn’t been there.

She then went to the west room, including the windowsill, where the talisman powder also remained undisturbed. It seemed the room was inaccessible to her.

Beisitian opened the door and came into the courtyard, taking a glance at the stool under the windowsill. This stool originally belonged to the east wing; she forgot to put it back after placing it outside during the day. If she had put it back, what would the ’female ghost’ have used to ’hang herself’?

Beisitian’s gaze turned to the northwest corner of the courtyard, holding the burning talisman powder in her hand, and slowly walked in that direction.

Because of the east wing, there was a gap in the courtyard’s northwest corner; a wheelbarrow used to stand there, appearing to have not been moved for ages. It had a dustpan on it, probably used by the former owner as a temporary place to dispose of rubbish.

Beisitian glanced over it; the gap wasn’t large, instantly revealing nothing could be hidden, but her gaze locked onto the corner between the courtyard wall and the west house.

A large wooden board blocked it, looking like an old door panel taken down and placed there, arousing Beisitian’s suspicion that there was likely a passage opening to the outside!

Cautiously, Beisitian walked over, knowing that the person must have already left, but still worried about any remaining traps.

After observing for some time, she found no hidden dangers and pushed the wooden panel slightly; it was loose.

Storing the talisman powder away, she used both hands to move the wooden panel aside, revealing a narrow passageway. It was cramped; even a woman would have to sidestep, and a slightly larger person would get stuck.

This passageway appeared unremarkable at first glance, only holding some piled-up odds and ends leading up to the courtyard wall, a dead-end. Yet Beisitian believed there had to be a way to the outside.

She re-powdered the talisman into her hand and sidestepped her way in.

The space was indeed incredibly tight, making it stuffy.

Reaching a pile of sticks for firewood, Beisitian couldn’t pass through unless she moved the wood aside.

Looking at the firewood, a thought sparked in her mind – why stack firewood here?

Much of the firewood was dry twigs, yet observing closely, some spots were dust-free.

Seeing this, Beisitian suddenly understood; the passageway likely lay underneath!

Beisitian moved the firewood aside in batches and soon saw a hole beneath. The opening was small, fitting only for women and children to crawl through.

Who would have thought there was a dog hole here!

With a smile at the corners of her mouth, Beisitian restacked the firewood to look as it did before, then stood up and exited.

Beisitian returned to the courtyard, glancing toward the courtyard wall. She recalled that the household there was the home of the woman she saw around thirty years old yesterday.

However, Beisitian was certain it wasn’t that woman. The woman who greeted her yesterday was plump and couldn’t have fitted in the passageway even if sidestepping.

Still, yesterday’s ’female ghost’ must have had some connection to that family. Otherwise, why would she crawl through the dog hole to come and play tricks in her courtyard!

Beisitian went to the west side of the courtyard, where she had set up a small kitchen next to the west wing, preparing a simple breakfast before planning to visit the neighbors.

Beisitian went out and bought some fruit before knocking on the neighboring house’s door.

The door was opened by the woman who greeted her yesterday. Seeing Beisitian, the woman hesitated before eyeing the fruit in her hand, showing a hint of puzzlement.

This woman had a pair of phoenix eyes, slightly sparse eyebrows, and somewhat thin lips, yet not looking mean. On the contrary, the more you looked, the more pleasing her appearance became.

"Sister, I’m the new neighbor. I’m not familiar with this place yet, and we met just yesterday. I hope it’s not a disturbance to you." Beisitian smiled shyly.

The woman seemed to understand, smiled, and invited her in, "Where are you from, girl? Do you plan to stay here long-term?" the woman asked, smiling.

"I haven’t decided yet. Sister, what is your surname?" Beisitian replied with a smile.

"I’m Zhou Yunxia. You seem quite young; I’ll call you my little sister," Zhou Yunxia said with a smile.

"Alright, my name is Beisitian."

The two of them walked inside the house.

This courtyard wasn’t as large as hers, filled with items. The northern house seemed a bit old, as if it hadn’t been renovated for many years.

Inside, the interior also looked somewhat worn-out. An elderly lady in the east room gazed curiously at them.

"This is my mother-in-law," Zhou Yunxia said to Beisitian with a smile, turning to the old lady, "Mom, this is Sitiang, the little sister from next door, coming over for a visit."

The old lady smiled at Beisitian, missing several teeth, causing her words to whistle slightly.

"Sit down, sit down." The old lady laughed, patting the kang.

Beisitian sat on the kang, chatting cheerfully with the old lady.

Zhou Yunxia asked a few questions about her circumstances. Since Beisitian was still feeling things out, she didn’t provide much detail, only mentioning her husband was in the military.

Zhou Yunxia laughed, "Many folks here are military families. No wonder you settled in this area, Sitiang."

No wonder she could buy a house here; without connections, it wouldn’t be possible to purchase, no matter the money.

In mid-conversation, a young lady came from outside. She seemed fairly young, with a slender figure, a palm-sized oval face white and clear, and mesmerizing large eyes. She visibly hesitated upon seeing Beisitian.

"Sister-in-law, who is this?" she asked Zhou Yunxia.

"This is Sitiang from next door. This is my husband’s cousin who visits during holidays, named Zheng Lulu," Zhou Yunxia introduced with a smile.

Beisitian greeted her, not lingering her gaze on Zheng Lulu, but instead turned to Zhou Yunxia, "Sister Zhou, I heard yesterday that my courtyard was haunted. It frightened me so much I didn’t return home at night but stayed at a friend’s. I wonder if it’s true?"

As she spoke, she watched Zheng Lulu’s expression cautiously from her peripheral vision.
