A few days had gone by, but I'd yet to hear back from Aria about if she convinced her succubi fellows. Every day that passed, we drew closer to opening day. I didn't want to ask Mr. Ishioka to delay. A large mob of people waited outside in three lines leading into the warehouse. There were a lot of people. Most of them were young like us. As we drew closer, however, Elendir raised a hand to stop us.

"Wait. There's a witch up there. We should be careful," Elendir warned.

"A witch?" I followed her gaze to the roof, where a witch sat on a broom attached to a springy coil to make it move back and forth. It was clearly fake. "Elendir, that's not real. It's a decoration they put up there."

"Huh? Are witches really real?" Kana shuddered.

"Why would they make a decoration out of something so terrifying? Yes, witches are very real in Elza. They are light elven sorceresses mad with power, often proving to be extremely dire threats," she explained.

I hoped I'd never have to meet a real witch then…

We went to pay for our tickets and were introduced to what the clerk described as 'four levels of terror'. Each level was scarier than the next, and the warehouse split into four different sections for it. The first two were designed for children in mind, with not so terrifying decorations and soft jump scares. The third level was where the adults went to get a good scare. The fourth was what they called a 'full contact' experience.

Employees were allowed to touch and even kidnap someone, drag them through the house, and restrain them. The designs were Hollywood movie set-level. Choosing that required that we sign a waiver, which gave me pause…

"I vote for level four!" Mio exclaimed eagerly.

"I-I'm not opposed to the fourth level," Kana said, trying to be brave.

We turned in the direction of the four entrances. The first three levels had enormous lines. It might even take up to an hour before we got in. The scariest level, however, unsurprisingly didn't have a line. No wonder I thought I only saw three lines. No one wanted to have the shit scared out of them.

The six of us funneled into a stereotypical old, 19th century mansion rife with creaky floorboards, covered in cobwebs, and a fog up to our knees. As soon as we were all in, the door slammed behind us. It was completely dark and took my eyes a few minutes to adjust.

Directly ahead of us, a staircase led to the second floor. At the top, a giant painting of an old woman leered down at us, her eyes tracing our every move. A short hallway gave way into the kitchen on the right, and the left into a massive living room with overturned furniture arranged into a maze. It was all so corny. I had to give them credit though. They went above and beyond to create an authentic haunted house experience.

A chilling laughter echoed through the foyer. Rika jumped a few feet into the air and took off running down the right hall.

"Rika!" Hitomi chased after her.

"Hey!" Hitomi's pounding from the other side was dull and distant. "I'm going to go catch up to Rika and start looking for a way out. You guys go on ahead!"

"What now?" Just as I asked that, red lights bathed the foyer.

Something scribbled onto the walls in giant texts that read, 'Run!'

The broom closet door nearby swung open, and someone in a pig mask wielding a machete brandished their blade at us. Mio rolled up her sleeve, looking like she wanted to throw hands, but I pushed everyone along towards the living room to escape.

However, just like with Rika and Hitomi, the wall closed in after Mio and Elendir made it through, leaving me and Kana in the foyer.

It was still early in the evening, so we invited Hitomi and Rika back to our place to hang out. Mio ordered Chinese food delivered, and Kana brought out board games and cards for us to play together. The six of us stayed in our costumes for the sake of holiday spirit.

Children ran up and down the corridor of the apartment complex trick or treating, which came as a surprise to me. Shinjuku was one of the few places in Japan that had a bigger than average diverse population. Glancing out the window, young adults poured out into the night in force dressed in costumes, no doubt headed to parties. If Halloween became a regular thing every year, that would be fine by me. 

I could hear trick or treaters knocking from door to door, and my place would inevitably be next. Fortunately, Kana had the sense to buy some candy beforehand. We had a bowl handy in case anyone came by.

"But I like staying at home. We also shouldn't go out too often until Aria figures out things on her end," I said.

The dark elven matron scooped a handful of candy into each child's bucket. They thanked her with big grins, and she waved them goodbye with an even warmer smile.

"It's too bad Halloween didn't start taking off until recently. If we were born a few years later, we would be out there trick or treating," Rika said.

"Maybe you would. Going door to door asking for candy isn't my idea of fun. I'm with Mio though. Let's find a karaoke place. There should be some still open at this time," Hitomi suggested.

"Oooh! Good idea, Prez. I knew I could count on you!" Mio jumped up, and Shadow leaped off her head.

Firetruck sirens blared past our apartment. Everyone ran to the window in time to see three trucks speeding down the road. They were headed in the direction of a pillar of smoke on the other side of the city. Just as I was wondering what that was about, my phone started ringing.

It was Selene. The moment I answered it, an explosion went off from her end.

"What happened?!" I asked.

Another explosion, and the line went to dial tone.
