Chapter 1881 - 1880: Zhang Ting’er
Chapter 1881 - 1880: Zhang Ting’er
"Heh heh." Zhang Xiaohao smiled playfully.
He walked toward the shop next door, not even bothering to close the door of his own shop.
"Brother Xiaohao, everything I said is true, my sister really is super pretty, as beautiful as a painting, a real girl-next-door beauty, so beautiful she makes fish sink and wild geese fall from the sky, and she plays the piano really well. As long as you promise to put in a good word for me, I’ll introduce my sister to you." Xiao Hu hurriedly chased after him.
No matter what he said, Zhang Xiaohao acted as if he hadn’t heard a word, and walked straight into the tailor shop next door.
"Brother Xiaohao, you’re here, hurry, come in and sit!" Seeing Zhang Xiaohao come over, a middle‑aged man quickly came up to greet him. He was Xiao Hu’s father.
"Brother Zhang, no need to be so polite, I’ll help myself." Zhang Xiaohao said with a smile.
He placed the two bottles of Wuliangye and six boxes of skewers he was carrying on the table.
"Brother Xiaohao, you’re being too polite again. It’s enough that you came, why bring anything! Look at you." Xiao Hu’s father said.
But he still happily took what Zhang Xiaohao handed over and set it on the table.
Then he turned around, glaring fiercely at Xiao Hu.
"I told you to go invite your Uncle Xiaohao, how did you drag it out until now? Can’t you see it’s already dark?" Xiao Hu’s father said with a cold face.
"Dad, I was wrong! Mainly it’s because Uncle Xiaohao teaches so well. I got too focused and lost track of time." Xiao Hu quickly admitted his mistake.
Brother Xiaohao had now become Uncle Xiaohao.
"Sigh! It’s rare that you like studying, how could Dad blame you! But remember this next time, you can’t delay your Uncle Xiaohao’s time, understand?" Xiao Hu’s father said.
"I know, Dad." Xiao Hu nodded.
Seeing that he’d muddled things past his father, Xiao Hu turned around and made a face at Zhang Xiaohao, his proud look as if to say, See? Even if you don’t help me, I can still bluff my way through.
"Heh heh." Zhang Xiaohao chuckled and ignored the little rascal.
"Brother Xiaohao, don’t just stand there spacing out, hurry and sit! The food and wine are all ready." Xiao Hu’s mother walked out of the kitchen.
Behind her followed a young woman in the prime of her youth, a delicate girl‑next‑door beauty, so pretty she could sink fish and shame wild geese, her skin fair and tender as snow, carrying a scholarly air about her.
"Brother Xiaohao, this is my daughter, her name is Zhang Ting’er." Xiao Hu’s father introduced.
"Hello." Zhang Xiaohao nodded politely.
"Hello." Zhang Ting’er nodded, her face flushing red.
"Eh? Sis, how come you’re back? Weren’t you working as a Piano Master in that wealthy household?" Xiao Hu asked, puzzled.
"Sigh! The young lady of that wealthy family is about to get married, so she won’t have time to keep learning the piano. They gave your sister a sum of money and sent her home." Xiao Hu’s mother explained.
"Oh." Xiao Hu replied.
He blinked at Zhang Xiaohao, his look seeming to say, Brother Xiaohao, I wasn’t lying, right? My sis is really beautiful, just like I said, so pretty she makes fish sink and the moon hide in shame!
Then he happily ran over to his sister.
"Alright, everyone stop standing around, sit down and eat! If we don’t eat now, the dishes will get cold and won’t taste good." Xiao Hu’s father called out.
He promptly invited Zhang Xiaohao to sit down on a chair.
"Brother Xiaohao, we’ve known each other for almost a month now, and I still don’t know what your family situation is like." Xiao Hu’s father asked.
"So it’s coming this fast?" Zhang Xiaohao laughed inwardly.
But he still said, "Right now it’s just me alone."
"Then are you married?" Xiao Hu’s father asked again.
"Yes." Zhang Xiaohao said.
"For a man, having three wives and four concubines is normal. By the way, how come I haven’t seen your wife?" Xiao Hu’s father asked in confusion.
"She’s got something going on right now, not convenient for her to come over." Zhang Xiaohao replied with a smile.
The wife he spoke of was naturally Cheng Tianxue.
"Mm, then what plans do you have for the future?" Xiao Hu’s father asked again.
"I might stay here three to five months, or maybe a year or two, then I’ll be leaving." Zhang Xiaohao answered truthfully, not hiding anything.
"Sigh! Enough, let’s drop it and eat. If we don’t eat soon, the food will get cold and won’t taste good." Xiao Hu’s father sighed.
Everything he’d asked before wasn’t really an issue. The key problem was that Zhang Xiaohao wouldn’t be staying here long; he’d be leaving after a while. That made things difficult—he couldn’t possibly let his precious daughter leave her hometown and follow him into a life where they might not even know where their next meal was coming from.
"Mm." Zhang Xiaohao smiled and picked up his chopsticks to start eating.
From beginning to end, Zhang Ting’er had been secretly observing Zhang Xiaohao. She didn’t know why, but even though it was only their first meeting, her heart was beating very fast, her face was burning red, and she just wanted to be with him.
After the meal.
"Brother Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, it’s getting late, I’ll head back now." Zhang Xiaohao said with a smile.
"Alright, Brother Xiaohao, take it slow." Xiao Hu’s father said.
He got up and walked him to the door, then closed it, and sat back down on the chair with a dejected expression.
If he’d had a cigarette at that moment, he would definitely have taken a deep drag without hesitation.
"Xiao Hu’s mother, you heard what Brother Xiaohao said too. Even if you think highly of him, he’s only staying here for a while before he leaves." Xiao Hu’s father said despondently.
"Sigh! It’s a case of having fate but no share." Xiao Hu’s mother sighed.
"Dad, Mom, I—I like him! Even if we can only be together for one day, I still want to be with him." Zhang Ting’er said earnestly, her face flushed red.
"Ting’er, it’s not that your mother doesn’t agree. You heard what he said just now: he can only stay here for a while, then he’ll leave. If you go with him, what will you do after he’s gone?" Xiao Hu’s mother persuaded.
"That’s right, Ting’er, if he leaves, you’ll be alone for the rest of your life!" Xiao Hu’s father tried to dissuade her.
"Actually, I think Brother Xiaohao is pretty great—he’s handsome, well‑read, has a good temper. If Sis could be with Brother Xiaohao, that’d be a good thing! Isn’t there a saying? Love isn’t about lasting forever, it’s enough that you once had it." Xiao Hu said seriously.
After he finished, Xiao Hu’s father, for once, didn’t string him up for a beating, just let out a complicated sigh.
"Ting’er, you make your own decision on this. Whatever you decide to do, I won’t stop you, as long as you don’t regret it in the future." Xiao Hu’s father said.
After speaking, he stood up from the chair and walked toward the bedroom in the back.
"Sigh! Since your father has already said that, I won’t stop you either. Do what you think is right. If you really want to be with him, then don’t delay! Every extra minute together is a minute gained—cherish what’s in front of you." Xiao Hu’s mother said.
"Mom, I—I want to go find him now." Zhang Ting’er said, mustering her courage.
"Sigh! I know your temperament. Once you’ve made up your mind, not even eight oxen could drag you back. If you want to go, then go." Xiao Hu’s mother sighed.
