Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Ghost's scarred mask concealed fury as he escorted Addison from the office. Each step away from their confrontation felt like tearing flesh from bone.
"Addison!" Jaxon's voice erupted with desperate relief as he crossed marble with determined strides. "Thank God you're alive."
His arms crashed around her with protective violence, pulling her against his chest where his heart thundered like artillery fire.
"I thought they'd hurt you," he breathed against her hair, his executive composure shattering to reveal raw terror. "When he took you away, I nearly lost my mind."
"I'm okay," she whispered, though her voice trembled like leaves before hurricane.
Across the lobby, Ghost's entire body radiated lethal tension as he watched Jaxon's hands trace her features with intimate familiarity. His fists clenched with barely controlled rage.
"What did he want?" Jaxon demanded, his voice soft but urgent as he studied her pale face.
"Questions about the bank," she lied, the words burning her throat like acid. "About you."
Ghost's stare intensified, pulling at her consciousness like magnetic force. She could feel his eyes burning through the mask, watching every gesture between them.
"You're trembling," Jaxon observed with gentle concern, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "Tell me what he did."
"Nothing," she said quickly, forcing herself to meet his worried gaze. "Just intimidation tactics."
"You're braver than I deserve," Jaxon declared with fierce admiration, pressing his lips to her forehead in tender benediction. "I'm getting us out of this nightmare. Both of us. Together."
He guided her toward the hostages, his arm wrapped around her waist with possessive protection that made Ghost's mask turn with predatory calculation.
"Here," Jaxon said, draping his suit jacket around her shoulders. "You're cold."
The fabric carried his scent—expensive cologne and familiar warmth that had once meant safety. Now it felt like armor against the emotional storm raging in her chest.
"Jaxon," she whispered as he settled beside her against the marble pillar. "What are we going to do?"
His eyes swept the lobby with tactical assessment, cataloguing every robber position before leaning closer to speak directly in her ear.
"I've been watching their patterns," he said with quiet intensity that sent electricity through her spine. "They get careless during shift changes."
"You're planning something," she breathed, recognizing the executive determination that had built his empire.
"An escape," he confirmed with steel conviction. "There's an emergency exit behind the information desk. If we move fast and quiet, we can reach it during their rotation."
"Jaxon, that's incredibly dangerous—"
"More dangerous than staying trapped with armed psychopaths?" he interrupted with urgency. "Addison, I can't protect you here. We need to run."
His hand found hers with desperate strength.
"I need you to be ready," he continued with fierce intensity. "When I give the signal, we move together. No hesitation, no looking back. Can you do that?"
"What about the others?" she asked, glancing toward terrified hostages.
"I can only save you," he replied with brutal honesty that cut through sentiment. "Don't tell anyone about this plan. Not Nora, not Marcus, nobody. Our lives depend on absolute secrecy."
"Jaxon—"
"Promise me," he demanded with urgent authority. "Promise you'll trust me and follow my lead when the moment comes."
Before she could answer, Ghost's commanding voice echoed across marble.
"Touching reunion," he announced with theatrical menace that made every hostage freeze. "But playtime's over."
Jaxon's arms tightened around Addison with protective fury as Ghost approached their position with predatory grace.
"Something wrong?" Jaxon challenged with executive authority that refused intimidation.
"Nothing that concerns you," Ghost replied with quiet venom, his mask reflecting deadly intention. "Yet."
The tension between them crackled like an electrical storm as two forces of nature prepared for collision. Addison found herself trapped between them—past and future warring for her soul, while Ghost was going toward her.
"Stay away from her," Jaxon declared.
"Or what?" Ghost's laugh carried razor edges that promised violence. "You'll file a complaint with management?"
"I'll do whatever it takes to protect her," Jaxon shot back with steel threading his voice.
Ghost's mask tilted with dangerous interest as he studied their defensive positioning.
"Protect her from what?" he asked with theatrical curiosity. "From truth? From choices she needs to make?"
"From you," Jaxon replied with absolute finality.
Addison's pulse hammered as emotional warfare exploded around her. Every word carried double meaning, every glance held history that threatened to destroy everything.
"Stop," Addison said firmly. "Just stop this. I want to end this nightmare as quickly as possible."
His mask turned toward her with predatory focus.
"Choosing the right allies," he continued with intensity. "Choosing who deserves loyalty."
"She's chosen," Jaxon declared with fierce conviction, his arm pulling her closer with possessive authority. "We're together. That's not changing."
"Everything changes," Ghost replied with a quiet promise that carried threat and desperate hope in equal measure. "Everything."
The lobby fell silent except for their thundering heartbeats and the electric tension that promised explosive confrontation.
"Perhaps it's time you and I settled this properly," Jaxon announced, stepping forward to shield Addison from Ghost's burning stare.
"Man to man," he added with steel conviction.
Ghost's mask reflected cruel satisfaction as he accepted the challenge that would determine everyone's fate.
"Agreed," he replied with quiet menace that promised revelations capable of destroying everything.
Addison watched helplessly as the two men who claimed to love her prepared for war that would tear her world apart.
