Hostage to Love

Chapter 28

Chapter 28

The gunshot echoed through the marble cathedral like thunder, followed in a few minutes by the explosive breach of reinforced glass as SWAT forces flooded the bank lobby. Flash-bang grenades detonated with artificial lightning that filled the space with smoke and tactical chaos.

"SWAT! Everyone down!" The lead officer commanded through his tactical mask, an assault rifle trained on the scene unfolding before them.

Jaxon had Viper pinned to the marble floor, his executive suit torn and bloodied from their struggle. Viper writhed beneath him with desperate fury, trying to reach the pistol that had skittered across polished stone after the shot.

"Suspect is down! Weapon secured!" Jaxon called out that cut through tactical communications, his hands maintaining pressure on Viper's wrists while SWAT officers converged on their position.

"Don't move! Hands visible!" SWAT commanded, though their rifles remained trained on Viper rather than Jaxon, whose protective stance over Addison made his allegiances clear.

From the shadows near the vault entrance, Brick emerged with massive hands raised high above his head, his military bearing evident despite surrender posture.

"I need a weapon!" Brick called out with desperate urgency that drew immediate tactical attention. "Viper's got backup positions throughout the building!"

"Drop to your knees! Now!" multiple SWAT officers commanded, their focus shifting toward the larger threat that Brick's size and military bearing represented.

"Check the upper floors! Multiple shooters!" Brick continued with manufactured panic that pulled tactical resources away from other areas of the bank, his voice came from genuine military experience.

While SWAT coordinated their response to Brick's manufactured threat, a shadow moved through the chaos with liquid precision. Firebird slipped through emergency exits with the tactical invisibility that had kept her alive through countless operations, her escape facilitated by Brick's masterful misdirection.

"Building secure! No additional threats detected!" came the all-clear from tactical teams sweeping the upper levels.

Paramedics flooded the scene with medical efficiency that transformed the marble cathedral into an emergency treatment center. Their first priority was the unconscious figure lying in an expanding pool of blood near the vault entrance.

"Critical gunshot wound! Male, approximately thirty-five, unconscious and bleeding heavily!" the lead paramedic announced with clinical precision, his team immediately surrounding Wyatt with life-saving equipment.

"We need immediate transport to the trauma center!" another medic called out while applying pressure to entry wounds that pumped arterial blood with each weakening heartbeat. "The patient is losing consciousness rapidly!"

Jaxon watched with complex emotions as they loaded Wyatt onto the stretcher, the man who had loved Addison enough to take a bullet meant for her now fighting for his life because of that same protective instinct.

"Is he going to make it?" Addison asked through tears that mixed grief with exhaustion, her voice barely audible above the medical chaos.

"We're doing everything possible," the paramedic replied with professional compassion. "Chicago General has the best trauma team in the city. If anyone can save him, they can."

The stretcher disappeared through emergency exits with sirens wailing, carrying Wyatt toward medical attention that might be too little, too late.

"Ma'am, we need to examine you immediately," another paramedic announced, approaching Addison with equipment designed for pregnancy emergencies. "Gunshot proximity and stress exposure require immediate assessment for both you and your baby."

"I'm fine," Addison protested weakly, though exhaustion etched lines around her eyes that told different stories.

"Eight weeks pregnant," Jaxon declared with protective precision, his executive composure restored now that immediate danger had passed. "Any complications need immediate evaluation."

They guided Addison toward the ambulance where the medical examination unfolded with systematic thoroughness. Blood pressure, pulse, stress indicators, fetal heartbeat—each measurement catalogued with clinical precision.

"Baby's heartbeat is strong and regular," the paramedic announced with professional satisfaction. "No immediate distress detected from either mother or child."

"Thank God," Jaxon breathed, his hands finding Addison's with desperate relief.

"However," the medic continued, "trauma exposure during early pregnancy can have delayed effects. Complete rest and follow-up care are absolutely essential."

"Whatever she needs," Jaxon declared with absolute conviction. "Nothing matters except their safety."

Detective Hawkins approached through the controlled chaos, his weathered face carrying the bureaucratic authority that came with processing crime scenes that would generate headlines for months.

"Mr. Wellington, Ms. Blackhawk," he began with official courtesy that couldn't mask his exhaustion from processing multiple crime scenes in one evening. "I understand this has been traumatic, but protocol requires preliminary statements from all witnesses."

"Now?" Jaxon asked with executive directness that expected reasonable accommodation for extenuating circumstances.

"Department policy," Hawkins confirmed with apologetic firmness. "Critical incident debriefing within four hours of event conclusion. We can conduct interviews at the station where you'll both be more comfortable."

"What about medical clearance?" Jaxon pressed that put Addison's welfare above bureaucratic convenience.

"The paramedics have cleared her for transport," Hawkins replied with administrative efficiency. "We'll keep the interviews brief and provide whatever accommodations pregnancy requires."

Jaxon helped Addison from the ambulance with gentle strength that had replaced his former controlling precision. The transformation from corporate manipulator to protective partner had been complete under pressure that revealed character rather than creating it.

"Are you ready for this?" Jaxon asked with tender concern that prioritized her emotional state over departmental efficiency.

"As ready as anyone can be after watching someone die trying to protect them," Addison replied with quiet dignity that commanded respect from everyone within hearing range.

They walked toward Detective Hawkins' unmarked sedan through crime scene chaos that would reshape their lives in ways they couldn't yet comprehend. Behind them, forensic teams processed evidence that would either vindicate their testimony or raise questions about their involvement in events that had left multiple people shot and others disappeared entirely.

"Whatever they ask, we tell the truth," Jaxon said with conviction that blazed across his features. "Complete transparency about everything that happened."

"Everything?" Addison asked with recognition that complete honesty might implicate people they cared about in federal crimes.

"Everything," Jaxon confirmed with steel threading his voice. "Wyatt died protecting us. The least we can do is make sure his sacrifice means something more than just ending a bank robbery."

Detective Hawkins held the rear door open with professional courtesy while they settled into seats that would carry them toward questioning that could determine whether they were witnesses, victims, or something more complicated that existed in legal gray areas between innocence and complicity.

"The station's only ten minutes away," Hawkins announced as they pulled into traffic that parted automatically for police vehicles. "Coffee will be fresh, and we'll have everything wrapped up before midnight if possible."

"Will we know anything about Wyatt's condition?" Addison asked with desperate hope threading her voice.

"I'll make sure someone contacts the hospital for updates," Hawkins promised with unexpected gentleness. "Whatever his relationship to tonight's events, no one deserves to die protecting innocent people."

The city lights blurred past their windows as they drove toward revelations that would either clear their names or complicate their lives in ways that mere survival couldn't resolve.
