Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Nora's condition deteriorated rapidly as afternoon stretched into evening. Blood soaked through makeshift bandages while fever burned across her pale skin like wildfire consuming paper.
"Temperature's climbing past 104," Rose reported, pressing her hand against Nora's forehead with clinical concern. "Infection's setting in fast."
"We need antibiotics," Jaxon declared, kneeling beside the injured woman transformed into genuine compassion. "Real medical supplies, not improvised field medicine."
"Working with what we have," Rose replied grimly.
Addison crouched beside her best friend, guilt crushing her chest like physical weight. Nora had sacrificed herself to protect the pregnancy secret, and now she was dying because of that loyalty.
"I'm so sorry," Addison whispered, gripping Nora's burning hand. "This is my fault."
"Don't," Nora managed through cracked lips, her voice barely audible above labored breathing. "Worth it. Both of you are worth it."
Wyatt approached their medical huddle with predatory grace, his masked attention focusing on the injured woman who'd revealed everything with her heroic intervention.
"How long does she have?" he asked Rose with deadly quiet.
"Without antibiotics? Six hours, maybe eight." Rose's tactical assessment carried brutal honesty. "The wound's too deep, too infected."
"Then we get her professional help," Wyatt decided with military finality.
Jaxon's head snapped up with surprise bleeding through his protective composure. "You'd risk your entire operation for someone who's not even part of this?"
"She protected an innocent woman," Wyatt replied with steel threading his voice. "That earns respect."
"From terrorists?"
"From soldiers."
The distinction carried weight that made even Jaxon reconsider his assumptions about the man behind the mask.
Wyatt moved to the communication station with purposeful strides, his decision crystallizing into action despite potential mission compromise.
"Detective Hawkins," he said into the phone.
"We're listening," came the immediate response.
"Medical evacuation required," Wyatt announced with clinical precision. "One injured civilian in exchange for proof of good faith."
"What kind of proof?"
"Your word that paramedics enter and exit without tactical interference," Wyatt stated with deadly calm. "Clean medical evacuation, no tricks, no surprises."
"Agreed," Hawkins replied without hesitation. "Paramedics are standing by."
Addison watched Wyatt orchestrate mercy with the same tactical brilliance that had made her fall in love with him years ago. Even in the midst of his vendetta, he wouldn't let innocence suffer unnecessarily.
"You're really letting her go?" she asked, stepping closer despite the electric tension radiating between them.
"Honor demands it," Wyatt replied without turning toward her voice, though his entire posture shifted with magnetic awareness of her proximity.
"Even if it compromises your mission?"
"Some things matter more than mission success."
The words hung between them like bridges across impossible distances—recognition of the moral code that had first drawn her to his fierce integrity.
Twenty minutes later, paramedics entered under heavy police escort. Their tactical gear couldn't disguise the relief in their movements as they approached Nora's deteriorating condition.
"Severe laceration with systemic infection," the lead medic announced, immediately starting IV fluids. "We need to move her now."
"Addison," Nora whispered as they prepared the stretcher, her fever-bright eyes burning with desperate urgency.
"I'm here," Addison said, leaning closer to catch her friend's failing voice.
"Listen to me," Nora commanded with strength that defied her condition. "Follow your heart, not your fears."
"Nora—"
"You deserve real love," Nora interrupted with fierce conviction that cut through medical chaos. "Not safe love. Not convenient love. Real love that sets your soul on fire."
"She needs to conserve her strength," the medic warned, but Nora's grip tightened around Addison's wrist with iron determination.
"Promise me," she insisted, her voice carrying clarity that transcended fever and pain. "Promise you'll choose what makes you alive, not what keeps you comfortable."
"I promise," Addison whispered through tears that fell like rain on drought-stricken earth.
The paramedics lifted Nora's stretcher with practiced efficiency, their movements swift and sure as life hung in the balance.
"Thank you," Nora said to Wyatt as they passed his position, her voice barely audible but carrying absolute sincerity. "For showing mercy."
Wyatt's mask tilted in acknowledgment, though his hands remained clenched at his sides like he was fighting the urge to reach toward something beyond his grasp.
The lobby fell into charged silence as medical personnel cleared the entrance. Emergency lights from outside painted red and blue shadows across marble walls, creating an atmosphere that felt both funeral and battlefield.
Jaxon approached Addison with executive determination, surveying the blood covering her dress and face.
"You need to clean up," he declared firmly. "All this blood isn't good for you or the baby."
He guided her toward the bathroom, but Brick's massive frame blocked their path like a human wall.
"Nobody moves without orders," Brick announced with military authority.
"She's pregnant and covered in blood!" Jaxon exploded with fury. "Move aside!"
"No exceptions," Brick replied with stone-cold resolve.
"Let us through!" Addison demanded with blazing defiance, but Brick remained immovable.
"GHOST!" she screamed across the marble space. "Let us wash this blood off!" She knew that he would let her go.
Wyatt stood frozen across the lobby, devastation radiating through his tactical composure. Her pregnancy announcement had shattered something fundamental in his soul, and everyone could feel his anguish crackling through the air.
Without speaking, Wyatt raised his hand in a dismissive gesture. Brick stepped aside immediately and let them in.
Inside the sterile bathroom, Jaxon's executive mask crumbled into pure vulnerability. He knelt before Addison with reverent tenderness, his hands hovering over her stomach.
"Our baby," he whispered with a voice breaking under overwhelming emotion. "You're both my entire world now."
His arms encircled her waist with protective devotion that blazed across his features.
"I'll give you everything," Jaxon promised with absolute conviction. "The best doctors, perfect nursery, complete security for our family."
"You're going to be an amazing father," Addison breathed, seeing transformation from ambitious CEO into devoted protector.
"Listen carefully," Jaxon whispered against her ear with urgent intensity. "In an hour, when they're distracted, we run. Emergency exit behind the information desk. Be ready."
Their lips met in a kiss that sealed promises of future and escape, tender passion interrupted by bathroom door exploding inward.
"Time's up!" Brick commanded as armed robbers flooded through the doorway. "Boss wants you back immediately!"
Rough hands dragged them apart, destroying their intimate moment with brutal efficiency.
