Chapter 684: Dream Factory

Gao Ming thought that it was Wang Jie’s eldest uncle who created the Dream Ghost. Now that he realised the Dream Ghost might be related to him, he didn’t know how to feel. The rest of the document detailed how the birthday wish anomaly slowly spiralled. The investigation centre couldn’t figure out the origin of the birthday wish. When a lot of people in the old city started to celebrate their birthdays at midnight, they realised things had gone out of control.

They missed the best time to deal with things. The old city was the horror game players’ territory. Therefore, the investigation centre wasn’t focused on dealing with the issue. They placed their attention mostly on dealing with the players.

When the investigation centre and the players reached a rudimentary agreement, the birthday wish anomaly had already spread to South City. Wang Jie’s uncle’s children risked their lives to deal with it but no one expected the anomaly to be so troublesome. Normal methods could not eliminate it. More and more people started to make their wishes at midnight. Strange wishes gathered together to form this ghost that no one had ever encountered.

It was born from human wishes. It existed within humanity’s greed, desire and anticipation. To eliminate it, one had to kill everyone who had made a wish. To make things worse, there was news that Wang Jie’s eldest uncle’s children had made their wishes too. Perhaps to shelter his children, Wang Jie’s uncle committed to a crazy decision. Some colluded with outsiders to take down Wang Jie’s eldest uncle.

Wang Jie’s eldest uncle was cornered. If he surrendered, he’d lose everything, so he chose to force a way forward. Wang Jie’s eldest uncle didn’t admit to any wrongdoings. He started to feed Gui Yuan more. He not only used living humans but also entered the shadow world to collect mud figurines to gather wishes.

Elder Wang knew what his son was doing but he didn’t stop him because he also desired the Dream Ghost’s power. In this chaotic era, only the Dream Ghost could protect the Wang Family. However, the sound of resistance was getting stronger.

Elder Wang wanted his eldest son to calm down the public but the latter didn’t care. He led all the security members at the South City Investigation Centre to enter the shadow world. They collected many curses and figurines. However, these were not enough. The thing that really made Gui Yuan take the last step was Han Hai Blood City’s lingering consciousness. Wang Jie’s eldest uncle discovered something shocking in the shadow world. The file didn’t mention it explicitly, but there was a rough note that Han Hai’s lingering consciousness had made a wish to Gui Yuan.“He left with 300 plus people and only 27 returned. They paid such a heavy price to help a ghost become stronger. Do you think my eldest uncle is suitable to take over that old man’s position?” Wang Jie noticed that Gao Ming had reached the last page. “My eldest uncle is polite and easy-going. Gao Ming closed the document. He didn’t answer Wang Jie. He glanced at the clock in the car. “How long before we’re there?”

“Instead of looking for Gui Yuan, it’s easier to lure it out. I’m bringing you to my uncle’s factory.” Wang Jie purposely leaked these things to Gao Ming. He didn’t need Gao Ming to side with him completely. He only needed Gao Ming to see through his eldest uncle’s pretence.

They were former roommates, but they started to trick each other.

Half an hour later, Wang Jie dropped Gao Ming off at a toy factory. The factory was huge and produced all kinds of toys, memorabilia and presents. This should be a place that produced joy, but it had been turned into a giant prison. The factory was surrounded by high walls. Workers in grey uniforms patrolled the place 24 hours a day.

“Those people in grey are hired by my eldest uncle. After the tragedy, he instantly gained public support. Many people trust him.” Wang Jie hadn’t even parked his car and people already ran over. He honked with impatience. He rolled down the window and shouted, “Don’t you see who I am? Don’t force me to run over you!”

Wang Jie wasn’t just saying that. He would really do it. The workers didn’t dare to stop him, so they had to call for their superior. Wang Jie led Gao Ming out of the car and waved at the leader of Team One who had been trailing them. The three of them entered the toy factory through the front door.

The pink walls that were decorated with cartoon characters were written with safety rules. A horrible scent of plastic lingered in the air. Some assembly lines were split into separate rooms. Each room had a black and a white box in front of the door. The white box had various toys. The black box contained cursed dolls, mud figurine fragments, hair, nails and trash with bloodstains.

When one neared the rooms, one would hear laughter from adults and children. Their lives were free of trouble.
