Chapter 796: Her gift
Chapter 796: Her gift
Charlotte Smith finished her shower and went straight to bed.
In her hazy state, she seemed to hear the noise from the servants downstairs, suggesting someone had returned.
Half-awake and half-dreaming, she felt footsteps coming from outside her door, someone standing before her, looking down at her.
She was extremely sleepy, her mind foggy, and she couldn’t open her eyes. Soon, her consciousness was pulled into a deeper dream, and she remembered nothing.
When she woke up, it was already morning.
A dreamless night, she sat up in bed and instinctively looked around the room.
The two large suitcases she had packed were quietly placed by the door, showing no signs of having been moved.
She had dreamt yesterday, dreaming that Robert Stephens had returned...
Shaking her head, she couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly.
Clearly, she was already planning to leave, but she still dreamt of him for some reason.
Did she hope he would ask her to stay?
Charlotte Smith, you really are...
So silly.
She sighed lightly, went into the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face, then changed out of her pajamas.
She pushed open the door, planning to go downstairs for breakfast, when she heard a "thud" as something fell from the doorknob.
Pausing in her movement, Charlotte instinctively looked at the floor, her gaze narrowing slightly when she saw the small gift box.
That was...
She bent down and reached out to pick it up.
The small gift box was wrapped in a ribbon, casually hung on the doorknob.
When she opened the door, it accidentally fell off.
She wasn’t foolish; she knew exactly what this was...
It was the pink diamond Robert Stephens had taken her to the mall to choose just the other day.
Could it be that he gave it to Janet Madison yesterday, and she had rejected it?
Feeling a complex mix of emotions, Charlotte opened the gift box and glanced at the diamond ring, still sparkling in the morning light, took a deep breath, and dashed downstairs with the gift box clutched in her hand.
She grabbed a maid and asked, "Where is Robert Stephens?"
The maid exclaimed, "Mr. Roberts is just about to leave for the office..."
Just then, Charlotte heard the sound of a car engine from outside.
She ran out and saw the slowly opening Lincoln at the doorway, instinctively shouting at the car, "Robert Stephens!"
The car halted, and Charlotte, out of breath, chased after it, knocking on the car window, "Robert Stephens, open the door!"
The black window lowered, revealing the handsome and gentle face of the man, his deep, dark eyes looking at her questioningly.
At that moment, Charlotte had so much she wanted to say, but upon seeing him, she didn’t know where to start.
She took a deep breath, unable to calm down, and could only raise her hand, opening her fingers to reveal the small gift box to Robert Stephens.
Robert glanced at her, then at the gift box, pondered for a moment, then reached out to open the box and took out the diamond ring.
Charlotte’s eyes widened slightly, looking at Robert’s actions in disbelief.
The man gently supported her hand, slipping the ring onto her ring finger, bit by bit.
She watched his actions, feeling a bit lost.
After putting on the ring for her, he patted the back of her hand and said, "All done. Go play, don’t cause any trouble."
He thought she wanted him to put it on for her personally.
"I-I didn’t..." Charlotte stammered, tongue-tied, not knowing how to explain.
Robert Stephens said, "I have to go to work now."
"..." Charlotte pursed her lips and quietly asked, "Is this my birthday gift?"
