Chapter 560: Robert Stephens’s Past
Chapter 560: Robert Stephens’s Past
In the evening, Edward Stephens personally drove to the company to pick her up.
Daisy Ginger walked out of the office and saw Edward’s car parked at the company entrance. Her gloomy mood that had lasted all day suddenly brightened, for reasons she couldn’t quite understand.
She pursed her lips, suppressing the upward curve of her mouth, and walked over gracefully. She opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat.
The man’s project in Tsing City had ended a month ago, and the main reason he stayed behind was probably because of her.
"Home or dinner?"
"Let’s eat first."
She was a bit hungry.
The man nodded and drove to a western restaurant near the company.
While waiting for the food, Daisy said to the man, "Emma Magus came to find me today."
Edward didn’t seem surprised, "What did she say?"
"Pretty much what you already told me." Daisy shook her head, "It’s just..."
"Just what?"
"She seems a little interested in your brother..." Daisy glanced at Edward.
The man raised an eyebrow, "Oh?"
Daisy reached out and touched his face, "Poor you, just abandoned like that." Not long ago, Emma Magus was still jealous of her because of Edward.
Edward chuckled, pinching Daisy’s hand, "I’ve already told you she means nothing to me."
Daisy shook her head, "Has your brother never loved anyone?"
Edward paused for a moment, his voice slightly hoarse, "That’s uncertain."
Daisy looked up at him, "Does he have someone he likes?"
"Probably."
Daisy tentatively asked, "Charlotte Smith?"
Edward still said, "Probably."
Daisy, hearing his vague reply, frowned and couldn’t help but say, "Don’t say probably; if your brother truly likes her, can’t she be persuaded to talk to him?"
"If she were effective, it wouldn’t have dragged on until now." Edward pinched her fingertips, "Even if he liked her, that was in the past."
"..." Daisy looked at him speechlessly, "Because your brother found out she likes you?"
Edward, irritated, tapped her forehead with a dining knife, his face cold, "Can’t you have a bit of the main wife’s aura instead of constantly introducing bizarre ’concubines’ to me?"
"..." Did she say something wrong? Charlotte Smith clearly liked him.
Daisy pouted, "What’s with your brother? Acting unloved, breaking up couples all the time."
"Charlotte once betrayed my brother because of her family."
The steak and red wine were served, and Edward poured a glass for her first, before slowly continuing, "My brother’s leg became paralyzed due to that accident."
Upon hearing this, Daisy was stunned.
Talking about the past, Edward was also a bit vague.
He was still young, studying in college, and the news of Robert Stephens’ accident reached him a month later.
He only heard vague whispers that the Smith family allied with several other families to bring down Robert, planting explosives in Robert’s car.
Robert was in a coma for over half a month, narrowly escaping death but left unable to walk, living life in a wheelchair, and simultaneously losing his fiancée and the inheritance rights of the Stephens family.
And back then, sitting in the car with him was Charlotte Smith.
The explosion’s major impact fell on him; if he hadn’t shielded her, Robert wouldn’t have been so severely injured.
It was later discovered that Charlotte was aware of the plot.
Robert went to a private hospital in the United States to recover, and his former glory fell upon him along with Charlotte.
Robert didn’t die, but the Smiths were the masterminds. After settling accounts, all of the Smith members involved, except Charlotte Smith, were killed by Robert. Otherwise, Ryan Smith, an illegitimate child, would never have been brought back by the Smiths. It was simply because anyone with familial ties or inheritance rights in the Smiths was eliminated by Robert.
Now the Smith family relies entirely on Charlotte, enduring whatever Robert throws at her.
...
Hearing Robert’s youthful tale from Edward, Daisy took a long time to regain her composure.
When she knew Robert, the man was already perfect, just like now, behaving flawlessly, like a perfect sculpture, so precise in behavior and expression that no genuine emotion showed.
It was unexpected he once risked life and limb for Charlotte Smith.
Daisy lowered her head, prodding the now cold steak with her fork, unable to resist saying, "And so he turned twisted?"
After being deprived of inheritance rights and betrayed by his fiancée, the man viewed her and Edward as a pair of pesky lovers, thinking about violence daily, and wanting to get rid of her.
Edward said plainly, "He just doesn’t want anything to slip beyond his control anymore."
Daisy asked, puzzled, "Does he think I’m uncontrollable?"
Edward laughed, pinching her cheek, "He thinks I’m disobedient."
"You’re not his toy. Do you not even have the right to choose your beloved?"
"To him, only things entirely under his control have the right to exist." Edward shook his head, "That explosion completely changed him."
His tone was somewhat dispirited; Robert’s change left an indelible mark on him.
He killed so many people, to the point where he could no longer discern the meaning of life and death. Anything useless, disobedient, had no reason to exist, which made it easy for him to take so many lives.
"Would he..." Daisy worried.
Edward shook his head, "No." He understood her meaning, tousling her hair, "He won’t harm me."
Despite his murderous past, Robert never harmed anyone in the Stephens family.
Everything he did over the years boosted the Stephens Consortium to greater heights, so many still followed him.
Even he had to admit, the Stephens were better in Robert’s hands.
"That’s good." Daisy sighed in relief, "If he wanted to harm you, then we’d better count our blessings and..." Her forehead was flicked, and she cried out softly, covering her forehead and glaring at him angrily, "What are you doing?"
The man’s eyes narrowed dangerously, "What were you about to say?"
"I..." Daisy swallowed nervously under his dangerous gaze, daunted, "Nothing..."
"No matter what happens, I won’t give up on you." Edward’s tone was grim, "Since I promised you a resolution, just wait for me patiently. Don’t start saying ’forget it,’ okay?"
Daisy: "...I didn’t even say that."
Who talks about love like they’re ready for a fight?
