Chapter 481 482: The Report
Chapter 481 482: The Report
Verifying this theory wouldn't be particularly difficult.
If [Wisdom] was merely an extension of the wizard's internal [Order], then
reality should shift according to the wizard's heart. This meant that if Sean
could reshape a spell, changing its magical power and finding different external
patterns for it, he could prove that a wizard's path relied more on [Order] than
on external [Wisdom].
For instance: if Sean could take the standard pronunciation and wand movements of the Wand-Lighting Charm (Lumos) but forcibly change its effect into a high-intensity Flare Charm, and then later find a set of incantations, runes, and gestures that better suited that new Flare Charm, it would prove that thewizard changes the world, rather than the wizard merely conforming to the
world's laws.
It was a fascinating thought—difficult, perhaps, or even entirely wrong. But
Sean's joy remained untarnished. Delving into the deeper mysteries of magic
always made a wizard's blood pump with excitement. Sean felt a long-lost passion
and calling, much like the feeling of reading Master Libatius Borage's books
late at night, feeling the guidance of deep magic and the tireless exploration
of the wizarding race.
His quill stopped. The roast lamb before him was still steaming. Sean let out a
long breath and looked at today's newspaper.
[New Release Preview from the Long-Retired Master Scamander—Don't You Know?
Merlin's Beard, How Can You Call Yourself a Scamander Fan?]
Sean had a faint, sinking feeling. He pulled the paper closer and saw Mr. Newt
Scamander smiling shyly in the photograph. Just then, the magical radio on the
long table crackled to life. Normally, Sean used it to study the integration of
magic and science, but now it was emitting a very different sound.
Usually, the radio spoke of celebrity trivia: the Weird Sisters being attacked
by fans during a performance in Durmstrang, or claims that Celestina Warbeck's A
Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love had been plagiarized... But, as always, when
the radio began broadcasting "normal" news, it tended to be the most important
news of the season.
The last time Sean had heard significant news was on Professor Terra's radio
when he returned from the International Alchemy Conference; before that, it was
the arrest of Gilderoy Lockhart—the former Defense Against the Dark Arts
professor currently residing in far-off Azkaban.
The radio spoke: "Will this be your final book, Mr. Scamander?" The voice was a
woman's, thick with suppressed excitement.
"...Yes."
It took Sean only a second to recognize the voice of his shy Hufflepuff senior.
"And you just said..."
"That God... may actually exist."
"What a shocking revelation! If God exists, what does He look like?"
"A black cat."
Sean sat in silence for a moment, then clicked the radio off. He looked up. The
High Table had gone completely silent.
"Why not leave it on?" Dumbledore winked at him.
"If you insist." Sean placed the radio back on the table. Dumbledore's smile
grew even kinder.
The scene was a harmonious one: a young wizard listening to the broadcast with
trepidation, while a group of elderly wizards watched with great interest,
pushing their tables together to huddle around the radio. Some professors were
interested in Newt Scamander as a Magizoologist; others were interested for
entirely different reasons.
"A black cat? What kind of black cat?" the radio continued.
"A black... black cat."
"I see..." Sean heard the host stifling a laugh. "Wizards and witches, Mr.
Scamander claims our God is a black cat..." Sean suspected the host must have
had professional training, or she surely would have burst out laughing by now.
"No," Newt's voice corrected.
"I beg your pardon?"
"God is not a black cat; that is merely its form. And 'God' might not be the
right word—it may simply be a powerful magical being. Our impression of it is
much like a Muggle's impression of a magical creature. They cannot comprehend
magic, so they cannot comprehend the creature. We cannot comprehend a higher
level of magic, so we call it a God."
"You mean..."
"In the days not long ago, meeting it was like meeting a powerful magical beast
in one's youth. If I were the first wizard to encounter a Diricawl, I would
think it a god capable of teleportation; if I were the first to see a Demiguise,
I would think it a god of invisibility."
"So, when did you meet it?" the host asked, her voice tinged with nervous
fascination.
"When I needed it. Ms. Bryna, have you ever dreamed?"
"Of course, Mr. Scamander. I had a wonderful dream only last night."
"Dreams make our fantasies possible; in dreams, we can even cross the boundary
between life and death. That is what I encountered. Under its guidance, I
crossed the threshold of death and undertook a great adventure. I have written
it all in the book, and I call it: The Master of Dreams and Mist, the Bridge
between Life and Death, the Symbol of Eternal Good Luck—"
Newt paused.
"What is its name?" the host asked urgently.
"I didn't ask."
"Oh! Mr. Scamander!" Even the professional host couldn't control her reaction.
"However, I call it Bastet. I hope it likes the name."
The radio broadcast ended there. There was no follow-up because Sean had quietly
slipped out of the Great Hall. He hadn't expected Mr. Scamander to turn around
and write an entire book the moment he got back.
He felt like a man who had discovered a hidden paradise, only to have the first
person he invited there immediately start selling tickets.
"Dear Bastet?"
In the corridor, the Headmaster walked past the young wizard, chuckling. "Oh,
dear Bastet... heavens, what an amusing name. I must write him a letter..." Even
as the old wizard walked away, his laughter echoed through the hall.
Sean sighed and spread the newspaper out again. He still had important things to look for.
In the Daily Prophet, a massive section was dedicated to Newt Scamander's
adventure from various angles. Sean looked closely until he found what he was
looking for:
[Ministry Official Wins Grand Prize] Arthur Weasley, Head of the Office for the
Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective
Objects, has won the annual Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw.
