Chapter 555 555: 555: No matter the era, the Lestranges are always detestable.
John had left.
But not completely.
He stood atop the Eiffel Tower, looking down at Credence kneeling on the ground.
Though it was cruel, it would preserve the future as much as possible.
John shifted his gaze elsewhere. His eyes turned into slit pupils, zooming in on the shadow below.
"That is… Newt?"
Seeing Newt with Tina, John said helplessly, "Hogwarts tradition. Wherever it's dangerous, that's where you go. Are you sure you're a Hufflepuff?"
The wind stirred John's hair. He reached out, pinching a strand between his fingers and rubbing it lightly.
"Feels like it's been a while since I last bathed," he muttered.
"So Grindelwald had you keep an eye on me?"
John turned his head. On the other side of the tower stood a tall, upright figure.
Wolfgang neither confirmed nor denied it. Holding his wand, he said calmly, "He told me you're dangerous."
"You didn't cast a spell at my back just now. Is that confidence?" John chuckled softly. "You should listen to him."
"Perhaps." Wolfgang leaned against the tower. "As long as you don't leave this place, we're not enemies."
"Is that so? It's a bit cold here."
John rubbed his hands together. "Don't you think?"
Wolfgang faithfully carried out Grindelwald's orders.
John looked up and muttered to himself, "It's about to rain."
"Standing this high up in a storm isn't a wise choice."
"Hm?" Wolfgang raised his head.
At some point, the sky had already darkened. Fierce winds swept through the heights, blowing Wolfgang's hat clean off.
John stood across from him, a faint smile on his lips. "Watch out for lightning."
He gave his wand a light flick.
The next second—Boom—!
As thunder roared from the sky, a bolt of white light struck the Eiffel Tower.
…
Boom—!
The flash split the night, illuminating Jacob's hurried steps through the cemetery.
He had come to France with Newt.
But after Newt and Tina went to the Ministry, he had seen traces of Queenie from a prophecy sphere belonging to Nicolas Flamel, the six-hundred-year-old man at the safe house.
He couldn't wait any longer and came here alone.
"Damn it, is it going to rain today?"
The thunder startled Jacob. The cemetery was already eerie, and now there was lightning on top of it.
Pulling his coat tighter, he headed toward the Lestrange mausoleum, marked with a raven crest.
He softly called out Queenie's name.
"Queenie?"
He didn't know that Nicolas Flamel's prophecy sphere had shown the future.
Receiving no reply, he continued forward.
He stepped into a narrow space filled with shadows and stone coffins, a single lamp standing there alone.
"Queenie, honey?"
He took two steps forward, sensing someone approaching from behind.
He spun around sharply, only to find a wand already pressed against his cheek.
"Don't move."
"Easy there, buddy." Jacob slowly turned his head, and upon seeing the man, said in surprise, "You?"
The person was Yusuf Kama, who had previously kidnapped Tina.
He had been parasitized by a creature, and it was Newt who had helped remove it.
Holding Jacob at wandpoint, Kama slowly led him into the shadows in the corner.
Jacob wanted to fight back, but had no chance.
After a while, Credence slowly walked in.
Nagini stood beside him as they followed the directions to the Lestrange mausoleum.
Inside the magnificent tomb, statues of the deceased members of the Lestrange family lay in silent repose.
"This is where…"
Credence's eyes were fixed ahead, unblinking. The answer to the origins he had long sought… would he finally find it here?
"Careful!" Nagini sensed danger at once. She transformed into a snake and hissed toward the shadows.
From within the darkness, Yusuf raised his wand, preparing to kill Credence.
He had once been forced to make a vow, to kill the thing most precious to the Lestrange who had taken his mother.
"Move! Get out of the way!" Yusuf shouted as Nagini blocked him, making it impossible to aim. "Then I'll have to kill you first, and then Corvus!"
At that moment, those who had escaped the Ministry with the Zouwu also arrived.
Leta had encountered Newt at the Ministry. While Newt and Tina were calming the Zouwu, she slipped inside.
The instant she saw Yusuf, her thoughts fell into chaos.
"Stop!"
Hearing the voice, Yusuf turned back, as if seeing his mother step forward.
It was Leta, his half-sister.
That face looked so much like their mother's.
"Is it really you, my little sister?"
Newt and Tina stepped inside, having noticed the disturbance here as well.
And Credence, seeing this scene, fell into confusion.
"He's your brother? Then who am I?"
Even though he had chosen Nagini, he still clung to the question of his origins.
Leta looked at the boy everyone had mistaken for the last bloodline of the Lestrange family and shook her head with pity. "I don't know."
"I'm tired of being nameless, without an identity." Credence stepped closer to Yusuf. "Tell me where I come from, and then you can finish it."
"No! Credence!" Nagini transformed back into her human form and blocked him, speaking earnestly. "Have you forgotten what he told you?"
Credence paused.
Seeing this, Yusuf also lowered his wand.
"Your origins lie in our past," Yusuf said, looking at Leta. "Our fates are intertwined."
This was a story that belonged to two families.
Kama and Lestrange.
A story spanning two generations, centered around one woman.
It was also the feud between their fathers, Mustafa Kama and Corvus Lestrange Sr.
They became bound by an unending hatred because of Yusuf and Leta's shared mother, Laurena.
The grievance of having his wife taken, the vengeance for his mother's death. On his deathbed, his father forced Yusuf to make an Unbreakable Vow.
One by one, the past was laid bare.
And the filth and ugliness of a great family were revealed when Leta opened that family tree.
The tree recorded only the males, while the females were marked as flowers.
Yusuf sought revenge, but Leta told him that Corvus Lestrange had long since died.
He had died in that shipwreck, caused by a single action of the young Leta.
She had swapped young Corvus with another baby.
Then the disaster struck.
Two lifeboats, one carrying Leta, the other carrying the switched Corvus.
The waves crashed down, swallowing that lifeboat.
Everyone on that lifeboat perished, including the infant.
On the family tree, the branch marked for Corvus Lestrange was entwined with orchids, before ultimately withering and dying.
Credence had never expected the answer he sought to turn out like this. He was utterly despondent.
Tina asked, "Leta, do you know Credence's real identity? Did you know when you switched the babies?"
"I didn't." Leta looked at Credence with deep regret.
Credence stood there, lost and shaken.
Nagini held his hand tightly, worried.
At that moment, an opening appeared in the wall of the mausoleum.
Everyone present stared at the staircase leading underground. From below came the rumbling voices of a large crowd.
Jacob walked over. "Queenie?"
He ran down the steps, with Newt and Tina following after him.
Leta glanced at Yusuf, then ran after Newt.
Yusuf hurried to follow.
"We should go down," Credence said.
Grindelwald had gone to great lengths to bring them here. The obsession with his origins drove Credence forward.
Nagini stayed by his side.
Below them lay an underground amphitheater.
Thousands of witches and wizards gathered in one place, a sea of people.
Statues bearing the raven motif stood all around.
Grindelwald's followers maintained order.
The two of them could only be swept along by the crowd, carried forward step by step.
These were pure-bloods, and it showed just how far Grindelwald's influence reached.
Even if some pure-bloods did not support him, he could still gather thousands of them here.
"Everyone here is a pure-blood wizard. They treat killing people like us as a game!" Nagini sensed the danger and tried to pull Credence away.
But Credence kept moving forward, leaving Nagini no choice but to follow.
The two of them stood out completely among these wizards.
Despite her fear, she still refused to leave him behind.
Jacob had found Queenie, but now that Queenie had come into contact with Grindelwald, she was stubbornly determined to stay and listen.
As an Auror, Tina immediately realized it was a trap.
Newt understood as well. Everything had been arranged to lure them here.
The surroundings were sealed off by Grindelwald's followers. There was no way out.
The lights dimmed, and the crowd began to cheer.
Grindelwald appeared.
…
Lestrange Mausoleum.
A figure stepped inside.
"So delaying me was your goal?"
John glanced around. "Lestrange."
He had arrived earlier.
But since he had ostensibly already left, he had not shown himself.
When he saw Yusuf Kama about to make a move against Nagini, he had already taken out his wand.
Fortunately, he hadn't needed to act.
With such a grand scene unfolding, he didn't believe the important Lestrange family had nothing to do with it.
"No matter the era, the Lestranges are always detestable."
Frowning slightly, he headed down the stairs.
