Chapter 223
Chapter 223
Annette said, "To apologize? Ms. Grace, are you sure you're here today to apologize? According to you, you're with Lucas, but you still have feelings for Connor. So, to protect the one you truly love, you can step on other people's wounds. You did it, since in your eyes, it was for the good of others. Therefore, you want others to understand you and forgive you, right?" Annette kept her voice steady.
Her words put Alina on alert.
Alina realized that Annette was indeed difficult to deal with.
"It's not like that. I didn't say you must forgive me now. Even if you don't forgive me now, it doesn't matter. I'll keep apologizing."
Annette smiled and shook her head, wondering, 'Am I wrong to be angry, or is there something wrong with Alina's mind?'
"Ms. Grace, I used to be bullied, which got me scared, so I have tended to protect myself. I have a history of being direct, and some of what I say may be harsh, but it's true. What you did this time is not something that can be solved with just an apology."
Alina said firmly, "Tell me then. What do you want? I'll try my best to make it up to you."
Annette sarcastically said, "Ms. Grace, let me ask you a question first."
Alina nodded and said, "Go ahead."
"Do you still think you're not wrong, or are you apologizing for Connor's sake?"
Alina knew what she had to say to make Annette happy.
Yet she didn't want to make Annette happy.
Alina looked embarrassed and said, "I don't think I did anything wrong, but you and Connor think I did. I don't want him to be mad at me. It would be easier for me to apologize to you than to be snubbed by him."
Annette nodded and said, "So, even though you apologize to me, you don't mean it. Then why have you come today?"
"I didn't get it. Ms. Hall, why do you hold on to such a trifle?"
"Ms. Grace, it might be a trifle in your eyes, yet it is an unforgivable thing in my life."
Annette found it hard to agree with Alina's words. It didn't happen to Alina, so Alina wouldn't feel bad.
Alina sighed and said, "Ms. Hall, don't you think it's really selfish of you to do so? Doesn't Connor have the right to make friends? Connor and I did have a relationship. So what? I can't be friends with him because of that?"
"I am selfish?" Annette was so furious that she almost laughed. "You're the selfish one, Ms. Grace. You are telling Connor's wife about your feelings for him? So? Do you want me to leave Connor so that you can be with him?"
"I'm not telling you about my feelings for Connor. I just want to tell you why I did this."
"Is there a difference? Ms. Grace, what do you think of Lucas and me? Are we leverages for you to show your true feelings for Connor? Don't you think you're being a bit ridiculous?"
Alina bites her lip and says with a look of aggrieved, "That's uncalled for."
"Me scolding you would be uncalled for. I wouldn't be this calm."
"Annette..." Alina was so sad, and she turned and left, crying.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Connor sitting on the bench next to the door.
She turned her head, wiped her eyes, glanced at Connor, and ran away.
When Alina returned to her ward and saw that Connor had not come after her, she felt upset.
She thought, 'Does Connor have to piss me off like this?
Asshole! All men are assholes.'
Connor sat for a while before standing up and returning to the ward.
Annette lay in her hospital bed, staring at the ceiling.
"She didn't say anything to irritate you, did she?"
Annette turned her gaze to him and asked, "The question you want to ask is whether I bullied her, right?"
"That's not true."
"You were just at the door. Didn't you see that Alina left crying?"
Connor shrugged and said, "I went to the stairwell to smoke. Besides, I don't give a damn whether she left crying or not."
"Connor," Annette sighed and said. "Are you really capable of not caring about Alina at all?"
"I don't care about things that don't belong to me. You are the only one I care about now."
"Men are always like this," Annette sighed with a bitter smile. "You can say whatever sweet nothings you want."
Connor sat down by the bed and said, "I meant everything I said to you."
Annette turned her face away and didn't look at him.
Connor said coldly, "What did Alina say to you this time? I'll go find her."
Then, he got up and walked out.
Annette shouted, "Stop right there."
Connor stopped and turned back to look at her.
Annette bit her lip and said, "Connor, are you doing this to let her know how miserable I am? Will you stop?"
"I just want to know why you're in such a bad mood after she left. I don't want you to misunderstand my relationship with her."
"You did have a past with her. I don't know who is in your heart right now, but I'm sure she still has feelings for you. Even you can't deny that."
"It's none of my business whether she has feelings for me or not. I know what I should do and what I shouldn't. If I hadn't met you, still, I wouldn't have hurt Lucas for her."
Annette looked at him and then sighed.
She thought, 'I shouldn't take it out on him.
Connor doesn't know what Alina said, and Alina did leave because of my harsh words.'
Annette changed the subject and said, "Where's my food?"
Connor turned around and said, "Someone will bring it here later. I asked them to prepare something nutritious for you."
He smiled and sat on the edge of the bed, asking, "You're not angry anymore, are you?"
She glared at him. Connor never understood that women were more or less stubborn.
Even though she wasn't angry anymore, she would still keep pretending for a while.
"Alpha Connor, I want you to leave the room."
Connor knew she had calmed down, so he sat down and said, "No. I'll be at wherever you are."
Annette looked away and didn't bother to quarrel with him anymore, yet she couldn't help but curl up her lips.
After a while, Connor's phone rang.
He took a glance and then said to Annette, "It's Dwayne."
Annette was wondering if it was Alina.
She said stubbornly, "I didn't ask you to tell me."
Connor walked to the window and picked up the phone.
He had his back to Annette, so she let herself stare at his back at her will.
She thought, 'The Moon Goddess favors Connor indeed. He is wise, handsome, and rich. Even his back looks so attractive.'
She was wondering, and Connor had put his phone down.
Annette hurriedly closed her eyes and pretended that she was asleep.
Connor came back and said with a smile, "I have some good news for you."
Annette opened her eyes a little and looked at him.
Connor said happily, "Jessica has been taken away by the police, and the Norman Group's legal team has arrived at the police station. I'll have Dwayne pick up your medical records now. I'm sure Jessica will be found guilty of intentional assault. I'd like to see how she gets to swagger this time."
As soon as he finished speaking, Annette's phone rang.
She picked up her phone from the nightstand and saw that it was Lance.
She already had a theory about why Lance was calling her right now.
