Chapter 400 - 419: Follow the Streamer, Get Free Natural Food from Ancient Earth
"For all you handsome gentlemen and lovely ladies still in line, you can go ahead and get your terminals ready!"
"Simply scan the QR code to follow our streamer, and you’ll get a free serving of a natural Ancient Earth food: tofu soup!"
This was the entrance to the senior activity center, and the people waiting for the bus were almost all over 150 years old—the Federation’s true senior citizens.
When they were born, technology hadn’t been so advanced. Things like "live streams" and "streamers" weren’t popular back in their day, so only a tiny fraction of them knew how to follow a streamer on a terminal. For most, the very topic left them completely in the dark.
Of course, it was no problem if they didn’t know.
They were new users, after all!
The young boy with the megaphone gently instructed the elderly people passing by. "It’s very simple, just open your terminal! That’s right. Sir, your model is actually quite advanced."
"Look, first you tap here, then scan our ID code. See? You’ve successfully followed."
"Our streamer’s name is Jiang Jiujiu. All the dishes we’re serving today are ones she’s made before. If you enjoy the food and want more, you can go check out her live streams."
There were quite a few people, so the young boy didn’t spend too long on the explanation. Once the follow was confirmed, he handed a bowl of tofu soup to the elderly person.
After the elderly person received their soup, the young man took a photo of them with a camera robot.
The elderly man holding the soup seemed unimpressed at first, but then he took a sip.
He was the first person to try the soup, and everyone in line had their eyes on him. They watched as he scooped up a spoonful and drank it. Perhaps due to his age, his face remained completely expressionless, so no one could tell whether he liked it or not.
But they quickly discovered they were mistaken.
Because this old gentleman suddenly started drinking his soup much faster. At first, he had just been daintily sipping one small spoonful at a time. Now, he was holding the paper bowl with both hands, blowing on it repeatedly. Once the soup was cool enough, he took a quick gulp. His expression was still blank, but his speed was off the charts.
Alternating between scooping and blowing, he finished the bowl of soup in no time.
If it tasted bad, would he be drinking it that fast? A small buzz rippled through the line.
However, that wasn’t even the slickest part. The slickest part was that as soon as the old gentleman’s bowl was empty, he strode right back to the end of the line to queue up again.
Tatami: ...
Tatami: !
Tatami grabbed Wang Chichi. "Th-that stuff looks really good!"
The line was in an uproar again.
All eyes were fixed on the stall once more, their gazes burning with anticipation.
The Ju people running the stall hadn’t expected it either. This old man wasn’t a shill, yet without saying a single word, his promotional effect was incredible!
At first, the line to get food moved slowly. It wasn’t because the food took long to prepare. After all, they were serving fried tofu and tofu soup. A large pot of the soup had been made in advance, which was no trouble at all, and the fried tofu was quick too, as they could fry several portions at once.
The hold-up was due to the seniors having trouble with the terminals.
After a while, though, the line started moving much faster.
One person after another accepted a bowl, took a curious sip, and declared it delicious. Most of them immediately got back in line for a second helping. The few who left did so only to go get their friends.
The reactions were so exaggerated that it made one wonder if everyone in line, aside from oneself, was a paid actor.
Tatami and Wang Chichi waited for quite a while themselves.
Finally, it was their turn.
Now that they were so close, the aroma was overwhelming. The small, brilliantly golden cubes looked absolutely delightful, but—
The young man ladled out a bowl of soup.
Tatami hesitated, then asked, "I don’t want the soup. Could I have a portion of that instead?"
She pointed at the fried tofu. The young man smiled. "Of course."
And so, the two of them received something different from everyone else.
The small golden tofu cubes were drizzled with a bit of red chili oil and topped with some chopped green herbs. It smelled heavenly.
Tatami used a small skewer to pick up a piece of tofu and pop it into her mouth.
In that instant—
She hadn’t even finished chewing before she was already dragging Wang Chichi back toward the line.
Her action made several of the nearby seniors, who were still sipping their soup, have a sudden realization. ’Hey, that’s right! Why am I waiting until I’m finished to get back in line? Can’t I just eat while I wait?!’
