Chapter 256: A Narrow Victory, an Injury

The pain radiating from the back of her head and temples was the most intense. For interstellar people, the deepest agony one could ever experience was the pain from within their Spirit Sea.

The jab was effective, and the man’s grip loosened slightly. Seeing her chance, Jiang Qiuqiu immediately launched her next counterattack against the Mercenary.

She couldn’t stop. Physically, she was no match for this man. She had to fight smart!

Her eyes darted to his position. To maintain his grip, the Mercenary was half-squatting beside her, his legs spread apart next to her elbow.

Jiang Qiuqiu’s hand felt around and closed over a sharp stone on the ground.

...

She molded all of her spiritual power into sharp spikes.

The Mercenary frantically gathered his own spiritual power to smash against Jiang Qiuqiu’s barrier. The impact was agonizing, but she ignored the pain. Disregarding all of his attacks, she unleashed her spikes with the force of an avalanche.

This was her Spirit Sea. When she grew stronger, everything within it would bend to her will.

The Mercenary was losing ground as the spikes struck him again and again. Jiang Qiuqiu’s face grew increasingly pale, and beads of sweat multiplied on her temples.

Her reserves were running low. She made a swift decision, fusing all the spikes into a single long spear and thrusting it violently at the Mercenary.

The Mercenary might have been able to react in that instant, but Jiang Qiuqiu, stone in hand, viciously smashed its sharpest edge into the man’s most vulnerable spot.

Something cracked.

The man—both his physical body and his spiritual power—let out a piercing shriek. His defenses crumbled. Without a moment’s hesitation, Jiang Qiuqiu ran his spiritual form through with her long spear.

...

A wave of spiritual shock washed over him. The hand on her neck suddenly went limp. Jiang Qiuqiu caught a single glimpse of the Mercenary’s agonized expression before she pushed herself off the ground, kicked him over, and bolted out of the woods.

But her strength was spent. She staggered and crashed into a tree, bracing herself against the trunk for a few seconds. Jiang Qiuqiu took a deep breath and then sprinted forward with every last ounce of her strength.

Her steps were uneven as she stumbled forward. Perhaps it was sheer survival instinct that allowed Jiang Qiuqiu to hit her top speed. Her heart pounded relentlessly. Her arms and legs felt as heavy as lead, but nothing could shake her determination to press onward.

It felt like an eternity and an instant all at once, and then Jiang Qiuqiu saw it: the guardhouse for Starry Sky Wander.

Her eyes lit up instantly!

The tall guard saw a resident staggering toward him and immediately ran out, catching Jiang Qiuqiu. "Miss, are you all right? What happened?"

"I was attacked! Please, help me call the police!"

...

She was home.

The familiar kitchen, the familiar swing, the familiar dishes, the familiar scents.

Her frantically pounding heart finally began to calm. The spiritual power she had kept coiled tight also relaxed slightly. This was a special residential complex; now that she was inside, she should be safe.

Now that she was in a safe environment, it was as if all the adrenaline-fueled buffs that had been sustaining her suddenly vanished.

A sharp pain shot through her back. A ring of red marks was already forming on her neck. Her throat, having been crushed, now felt raw, and her voice was suddenly hoarse. But these were minor aches. Jiang Qiuqiu discovered that the worst pain was in her Spirit Sea.

Even though she had gained the upper hand in the fight, she had no systematic training. Pushing herself into real combat and overdrawing on her power in every way made her head feel like it was about to explode. She quickly took out the Spirit Recovery Helmet that Mo Chengyu had given her and placed it on her head.

It felt like a blessing of cool rain on parched land—

Jiang Qiuqiu instantly fell into a deep sleep, without even having the time to message anyone.
