Chapter 35
Chapter 35
Chapter 35 Zero DistanceWhen Wen Yufeng saw Qin Qing running toward him, he felt a rush of undeniable joy filling his entire being, despite his initial surprise.
He couldn’t help but take a step forward, emerging from the shadowy tree.
At the same time, Qin Qing stopped in front of him.
The girl was slightly out of breath, her fair cheeks tinged with a soft pink.
“Wen Yufeng…”
Qin Qing exhaled a little, lifting her head to look at the tall boy standing before her.
“Come home with me.”
But Wen Yufeng didn’t respond right away; he just looked down at her, his gaze steady.
Qin Qing hesitated for a couple of seconds, blinking uncertainly.
“You have an injury on your arm; it’s not convenient for you to walk alone…”
Wen Yufeng’s thin lips moved slightly, and he looked down at the somewhat uneasy girl before him, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he replied in a slightly hoarse voice, “Aren’t you afraid your brother will scold you for bringing me into the car?”
“…”
Qin Qing’s face scrunched up slightly before she shook her head, reaching out to take hold of Wen Yufeng’s left hand.
Wen Yufeng’s gaze shifted as he lowered his eyes.
The girl’s hand, like her, was small and delicate, with slender fingers that looked even cuter compared to his long, bony ones.
Perhaps because she couldn’t hold his entire hand, she only grasped his ring and little fingers, tugging him steadily toward the parked car by the roadside.
Wen Yufeng’s expression changed several times before he suppressed the urge to pull her into his arms.
Meanwhile, inside the car, Qin Hao, who had been watching the entire scene unfold through the rearview mirror, wore a somber expression, his eyes fixed on the tall, indistinct figure of the boy following Qin Qing.
—
Although the boy had his head lowered, and the night made it hard for Qin Hao to see his expression clearly, he instinctively felt a sense of danger.
It was as if his innocent little sister was leading a ferocious wolf home, mistaking it for a gentle dog.
And this feeling was finally confirmed when the two of them reached the car, and he could see the boy’s face clearly.
This was the same boy they had seen that day at the mixed martial arts arena!
Qin Hao’s expression changed completely.
But before he could say anything, Qin Qing opened the back seat door and stuck her little head inside.
“Second Brother, if you’re unwilling to give him a ride, I’ll take my classmate home in a taxi.”
Her delicate and pretty face was slightly tense, and her clear eyes clearly conveyed that she was serious.
“…”
Qin Hao was forced to swallow the words that were about to come out of his mouth.
—
Even if he had been hit on the head by a door, there was no way he would let this person go home alone with his little sister!
Seeing that Qin Hao had relented, Qin Qing’s eyes softened into a gentle curve.
“Thank you, Second Brother.”
After speaking, Qin Qing stepped back to allow the boy standing outside to get into the car first.
As soon as Wen Yufeng bent down to get in, he could feel the hostile gaze coming from the central rearview mirror in the driver’s seat.
His thin lips curved slightly as he settled into the car.
Knowing that Wen Yufeng couldn’t use his right hand, Qin Qing took the initiative to help him close the car door on that side before circling around the back of the car to the left side.
In the near-dead silence of the car, Wen Yufeng glanced at the girl approaching the car door outside and chuckled softly—
“Thank you, Second Brother.”
“…………”
Qin Hao’s body stiffened in the driver’s seat, almost exploding with anger.
“Who are you calling ‘Second Brother’—”
Before he could finish his sentence, the left car door was opened by Qin Qing.
The petite girl climbed into the car.
Apparently hearing the tail end of the outburst, she blinked in confusion, glancing at the person in front of her and then at Wen Yufeng, who was sitting beside her with a faint, amused expression.
As Qin Qing settled into her seat, she thought back to the angry outburst and frowned slightly.
“Second Brother.”
Although she didn’t say much, her meaning was clear.
Qin Hao: “…”
He forcefully swallowed the words he hadn’t yet finished, his face flushing red, nearly giving himself an internal injury.
After a couple of seconds, Qin Hao shot a venomous glare at Wen Yufeng through the rearview mirror before starting the car and driving away.
…………
The car ride was silent until they reached the building where Qin Qing’s grandmother lived.
Qin Hao, expressionless, glanced in the rearview mirror.
“Xiao Qing, you go inside first. I’ll take your classmate home.”
Qin Qing, who had been about to open the door, hesitated.
It wasn’t until this moment that she realized she hadn’t explained that they lived on the same floor.
After hesitating for a moment, she finally spoke up, “Second Brother… He lives in this building too.”
“…”
Qin Hao’s temple throbbed as he turned around with a dark expression.
“He lives here too??”
Each word seemed to be squeezed out through gritted teeth.
Qin Qing bit her tongue and quickly pushed the door open, jumping out of the car and running around to the other side to help Wen Yufeng open the door and pull him out.
The urgency in her movements made it seem as if she was afraid her brother would drive off with him and dispose of the evidence.
Wen Yufeng was amused by her behavior and let out a low chuckle.
Qin Hao finally couldn’t hold back his anger any longer, undoing his seatbelt and getting out of the car, slamming the driver’s side door with a loud bang.
He strode around the front of the car, his expression even more terrifying in the darkness.
Qin Qing was startled.
—
She had never seen her brother look so scary in her entire life.
It made her instinctively want to run away.
But at this moment, her reflexive response wasn’t to flee, but to extend her slender arms and place herself in front of Wen Yufeng.
As soon as she did this, both Qin Hao and Wen Yufeng froze, and even Qin Qing herself was momentarily stunned.
…This reflex is a bit strange, isn’t it?
But before she could think it through, Qin Qing straightened her delicate neck, lifting her little face to look at Qin Hao with an innocent expression in her eyes.
“Second Brother, he still has an injury on his hand… Don’t scare him.”
Qin Hao snapped out of it, nearly choking on his anger.
—
He really wanted to drag his cousin over and show her the boy standing behind her—could someone with such a deep, wolfish gaze really be scared by him??
He feared that before he could do anything, this wolf would snatch his Xiao Qing and drag her back to its den!
But seeing that Qin Qing had taken on a protective stance, he couldn’t push any further and could only lift his gaze to glare at the boy who was slightly taller than him.
“If you dare do anything to Xiao Qing…”
Before he could finish, Qin Hao turned around with a cold expression and got back into the car.
It wasn’t until Qin Hao’s car disappeared from sight that Qin Qing finally breathed a sigh of relief, lowering her arms, which had grown a bit sore.
She nervously wrinkled her nose and turned around.
“Wen Yufeng, are you okay?”
“…”
But before Qin Qing could finish her sentence, the boy in front of her had already taken long strides toward the building.
Qin Qing stood there in a daze.
…Is he angry?
Puzzled, she frowned slightly and quickly followed him inside.
All the way into the elevator, the boy stood silently in front of her, his back as tall and straight as ever. But if one looked closely, they would notice the slight tension in his posture and the left hand clenched tightly in his sweatshirt pocket.
—
He was trying to suppress the emotions that had been stirred up all evening, emotions that he had barely managed to control but were now rekindled by the girl’s simple gesture.
His eyes, fixed on the elevator doors, were as dark as pitch, filled with tumultuous emotions that seemed to burn holes into the metal doors.
Wen Yufeng clenched his left hand tightly, repeatedly calming the beast within him.
She’s only fifteen, Wen Yufeng.
A person should have some boundaries and a conscience… right?
As the elevator doors opened, the boy with a tense posture walked out.
Then he heard a small, soft exclamation from the girl behind him.
Wen Yufeng lifted his eyelids.
It was pitch black.
—Even though his night vision was excellent, in this situation, he could only make out vague shapes of the walls.
The girl behind him obviously didn’t have this ability, nor the courage.
Qin Qing hesitantly stepped out of the elevator.
Once the doors closed and the light disappeared, they were completely engulfed in darkness.
“Is… is the light broken?”
Qin Qing, a little scared of the dark, asked in a trembling voice.
Wen Yufeng had planned to go home with the self-control he had successfully managed to maintain. But hearing the soft and delicate voice of the girl, he could almost picture her pitiful expression.
Just the thought of it made him feel like a small cat’s paw was lightly scratching at his heart.
A tingling, ticklish sensation.
In the darkness, the boy’s body stiffened even more.
Unaware of all this, Qin Qing blinked her pretty almond-shaped eyes in vain, trying to adjust to the darkness, while cautiously sticking close to the wall.
Her slender wrist reached out, trying to feel her way.
She was clearly quite frightened by the seemingly endless darkness.
“Wen Yufeng…”
When she spoke again, her voice was even softer and lower, like a small, frightened animal curling up into a ball.
“Are you… are you still there?”
The soft, trembling voice was weak and shaky.
“…”
Wen Yufeng silently cursed to himself.
He licked his dry lips, turned around, and grabbed her wrist, pushing her against the wall.
He leaned in close, bending down until he was right beside her neck.
“Sweetheart…”
His hot breath, almost burning, brushed against her neck. His deep, husky voice reverberated in the empty elevator lobby.
“You should be afraid of me.”
Qin Qing was momentarily stunned. She blinked her eyes.
The close proximity, which in the pitch-black darkness would normally have made her feel awkward, didn’t affect her.
Instead, the faint scent of mint and tobacco coming from him in the quiet darkness only made her feel at ease.
Even the slight fear she had earlier began to dissipate.
So, she tilted her head in confusion.
“Why should I… be afraid of you?”
Her soft voice, innocent and unguarded, whispered into his ear, and Wen Yufeng’s eyes darkened as his Adam’s apple bobbed.
He took a deep breath, and after a long moment, he chuckled softly.
“Because you have no idea… what I’m thinking right now.”
Qin Qing froze, wanting to ask something more, but suddenly, the warm breath close to her face pulled away.
At the same time, her wrist was gently gripped, and she was led forward into the darkness by the boy who had moved away from her.
After a short while, Wen Yufeng stopped. He guided her hand to the doorknob and then released her wrist, reaching up to press the doorbell.
Before Qin Qing could react, he turned and walked toward his own home in the opposite direction.
Wen Yufeng stood outside the door, motionless, until a light flickered on not far behind him, then went out again.
He exhaled softly and leaned back against the wall.
The sharp lines of his jaw relaxed as the usually deep, dark eyes reflected a hint of confusion, staring into the void of the dark air.
In the silence, the security door of his own home suddenly clicked open.
The wary expression on Wen Yufeng’s face instantly replaced his earlier daze, and a sharp glint flashed through his pupils.
He quickly stepped back, fists clenched, his gaze icy as he stared intently at the door.
A sliver of light spilled out, gradually widening.
The figure of a man leaning against the doorframe came into view.
Seeing who it was, Wen Yufeng froze.
“—Uncle?”
…………
As soon as Qin Qing stepped through her front door, the aroma of chicken soup hit her nose.
“Grandma, did you make chicken soup?” Qin Qing asked curiously.
Her grandmother, who had come to open the door, smiled warmly. “Not just chicken soup, I made chicken congee. I simmered the broth for over two hours before adding the rice, so it’s full of flavor.”
As she spoke, Grandma Qin turned back to the kitchen.
“You kids have such heavy workloads at school; you’re all so worn out. I have to make sure my dear Sweetie gets plenty of nourishment.”
Qin Qing followed her into the kitchen.
“It smells delicious, Grandma. It’s definitely your special touch.”
“Of course it is,” her grandmother replied with a chuckle. “But it still needs about ten more minutes, so don’t rush.”
Qin Qing obediently sat down at the dining table, her pretty almond-shaped eyes watching the kitchen intently. “I’m not rushing.”
After about ten minutes, the freshly cooked chicken congee was ready. Qin Qing was just about to pick up a spoon when she paused, a hesitant look crossing her face.
She sat there, staring at the congee, clearly torn.
“What’s wrong? Doesn’t it look good?” Grandma Qin asked curiously.
“It’s not that…” Qin Qing hesitated for a while before lifting her face to ask, “Grandma, can I take some of the congee to someone else?”
Her grandmother was taken aback. “Hmm? Who would you be taking it to at this hour?”
Qin Qing replied, “The boy who lives across the hall.”
Grandma Qin froze mid-motion, her brows knitting together.
“The one who had a girl crying and chasing after him all the way to his door?”
“…”
Qin Qing choked, then nodded awkwardly.
“You know him?”
Qin Qing nodded cautiously. “Grandma, he’s really nice. He’s helped me a lot since I started at the new school.”
Her grandmother still seemed a bit unsure, but seeing the earnest look in Qin Qing’s eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
“I’ll get a thermos for you to put some congee in.”
Qin Qing’s face lit up with a smile. “I knew you’re the best, Grandma.”
“If I didn’t agree, would that make me not the best?” Grandma Qin teased as she walked into the kitchen. “You little rascal, always siding with outsiders.”
“No, I wouldn’t.”
Qin Qing leaned against the kitchen’s sliding glass door, laughing as she tilted her head.
After a while, Qin Qing took the filled thermos to the entrance.
This time, she was smart enough to grab a small flashlight before she opened the security door.
“Hurry back to eat the congee; it’ll get cold otherwise,” Grandma Qin called from the kitchen.
Qin Qing responded and closed the door behind her.
She walked over to the door across the hall and raised her hand to ring the doorbell.
“…He shouldn’t be asleep this early, right?” Qin Qing murmured to herself.
Before she could finish, the security door opened.
A man she didn’t recognize appeared in front of her.
—
He was tall, with deep-set features, and there was a faint bluish tint to his eyes.
He looked like… a mixed race?
Qin Qing was momentarily stunned.
…But didn’t Grandma say he lived alone?
Before Qin Qing could gather her thoughts, the man’s sharp, cool gaze swept over her, finally resting on the thermos in her hands.
His lips curved slightly.
“Are you looking for Wen Yufeng?”
Qin Qing hesitated before nodding.
Seeing the man smile, she realized that his facial structure seemed somewhat similar to Wen Yufeng’s. But unlike the boy she knew, who always had a lazy, carefree smile, this man exuded a certain… unexplained intensity.
Every move he made carried an air of “stay away” that was almost tangible.
As Qin Qing debated whether to hand the thermos to the man, she heard his magnetic voice again.
“Come in.”
“…Thank you.”
Under the weight of his imposing presence, Qin Qing didn’t dare refuse. She carried the thermos inside and obediently stood in the corner of the entrance.
The man, who had already returned to the living room, glanced back at her, as if about to say something.
Then, Qin Qing noticed that the wristband-like device on his arm flashed briefly.
The man raised an eyebrow and adjusted the device.
A few seconds later, he turned and walked toward the kitchen.
“I have something to attend to. Wait here,” he said as he walked away.
Qin Qing nodded.
It wasn’t until the man had disappeared into the kitchen that Qin Qing realized something.
…Wasn’t he about to leave? What was he doing in the kitchen?
Maybe he’s getting something?
But as the minutes passed with no sign of the man returning, all of Qin Qing’s guesses were thrown out the window.
Only then did she recall—
From the moment she entered, aside from the conversation, she hadn’t heard a single footstep from the man.
Not even when he entered the kitchen.
“…!”
Qin Qing felt a rush of blood to her head, goosebumps rising all over her body, and her almond-shaped eyes widened in shock.
After a few seconds, she cautiously walked toward the kitchen.
She stopped a few steps away from the kitchen door.
—
The kitchen was empty, with the window wide open. The late summer breeze blew in, carrying an eerie chill that made her shiver.
“…Wen Yufeng!”
A soft, tearful voice echoed in the apartment as Qin Qing, clutching the thermos, turned and ran toward what she guessed was the bedroom.
At the same time, in the master bathroom, Wen Yufeng’s movements paused.
—
It sounds like someone is crying?
…Or am I already so far gone that I am hallucinating?
After hesitating for a couple of seconds, Wen Yufeng reached out to turn off the shower, grabbed a towel from the nearby rack, wrapped it around his waist, and walked out.
He went straight to the living room after leaving the bathroom. Opening the door to the bedroom, he sighed at the sight of the empty living room.
…Great.
Now I’m hearing things. I must be losing my mind.
Just as he was about to turn around and head back to the bathroom, he heard frantic footsteps approaching.
Two seconds later, the girl came running out of the adjacent room, her voice tearful, and threw herself into his arms, clutching the thermos.
