Chapter 544 544: Anthony's Request

Chapter 544 544: Anthony's Request

After the banquet ended, the first thing Wade did was still to find Professor McGonagall and retrieve the Time-Turner.

The fire in the fireplace flickered gently. Professor McGonagall sat in a chair with a much gentler expression than in the Great Hall.

"Sit down, Wade."

She took out the box that stored the Time-Turner from a cabinet. But after opening it, she didn't hand it over immediately.

"I know your class schedule has become much more flexible now. Even without the Time-Turner, you can manage your time well… But I still applied for this Time-Turner for you."

Looking into Wade's eyes, she said with a serious and earnest tone, "Because I also know you've assigned yourself a great deal of tasks. Even if your time is doubled, it still wouldn't be enough. So you really need the Time-Turner."

Wade smiled and said, "That's true. Thank you very much for your help, Professor."

"Then you surely still remember the taboos for using the Time-Turner?" Professor McGonagall asked.

Wade nodded. "Don't interfere directly with events that have already happened. Don't exceed five hours. Don't use it repeatedly in the same time slot. It's only for studying—never for personal gain. And… never tell anyone else about it."

Professor McGonagall's lips curled slightly before she quickly resumed her stern expression. She pushed the box toward Wade and said, "Good. Make sure you strictly follow the rules."

"I will."

Wade said as he took out the Time-Turner, draped the long gold chain around his neck, and tucked the hourglass inside his collar.

"One more thing," Professor McGonagall added. "If you intend to participate in the tournament, remember—absolutely no using the Time-Turner to influence the outcome of the competition. Understood?"

"Of course," Wade replied. "If I had to rely on cheating to win, I'd rather admit defeat honorably."

Professor McGonagall let out a barely noticeable smile. "Very good, Wade. You may go."

Watching her student—whom she was quite proud of—leave the office, Professor McGonagall began to undo her tight bun as she tapped her left ear.

Right away, she heard Flitwick's eager voice: "Well? Well? Minerva, did Wade come to get the Time-Turner? What did he say?"

"Wade just left." Professor McGonagall poured herself a glass of butterbeer and stood by the window, looking out toward the distant Black Lake. "You guessed wrong. He is planning to participate in the tournament."

Two seconds later, Flitwick shrieked, "Are you sure? He's really going to join?"

"Yes, I've already spoken with him," Professor McGonagall said with certainty.

"That's fantastic!"

On the other end of the call, Flitwick jumped for joy. "I thought for sure he wouldn't be into this kind of spotlight-grabbing event! I've been racking my brain for days trying to figure out how to persuade him!"

Professor McGonagall chuckled. "It seems the boy is a bit more spirited than you gave him credit for…"

"Haha… Or maybe he's doing it for Hogwarts' honor," Professor Flitwick said excitedly, bobbing his head. "If you ask me, as long as Wade joins, the trophy is definitely coming to Hogwarts!"

Professor McGonagall, however, wasn't quite so optimistic. She took a sip of her drink and a trace of worry flickered in her eyes.

"Of course I believe in his abilities," she said, "but compared to adult wizards, Wade still lacks a bit in magical power. The other schools are bound to have some truly outstanding students as well."

She sighed. "And this time, the scale of the tournament is unprecedented—eleven schools are participating... The level of danger is sure to exceed anything we've seen before. Anything could happen during the competition..."

"But Dumbledore will be watching over everything! And the Ministry of Magic, having learned its lesson from the last World Cup, will definitely take security extremely seriously this time," Professor Flitwick said optimistically.

"Minerva, you really should have seen the spells Wade demonstrated for me... absolutely flawless! At this point, he's already qualified to earn an N.E.W.T. in Charms!"

"It's the same with my Transfiguration class," Professor McGonagall replied softly. "But the tournament requires more than just flawless spellwork… It also requires other things."

She continued in a low voice, "Things like trust in your teammates. The ability to ask for help when needed. And... being on guard against tactics that happen outside the arena."

Flitwick stroked his chin thoughtfully. "I understand… I'll have another chat with him. Thank you for the reminder, Minerva! That really helped a lot!"

The communication ended, and McGonagall heard two soft beep—beep sounds in her ear. She blinked blankly.

—Filius… What exactly did you understand?

When Wade returned to the common room, he found that everyone else had already gone to bed. Only Anthony Goldstein remained and he was sitting by the fireplace with a book in hand—Practical Defensive Magic.

A cat—no one knew whose—lay on the mantel above the fireplace, and its tail was dangling and lazily swaying back and forth.

Wade glanced at the cat to confirm it was just an ordinary pet, then walked over and sat across from Anthony. "Anthony, is there something I can help you with?"

Anthony put down his book, hesitated for a moment, and then asked, "Wade, are you going to participate in the tournament?"

Wade nodded. "Of course."

Anthony let out a breath and gave a relaxed smile. "That's a relief."

"Relief?" Wade asked, puzzled. "Why?"

"Because now I can stop losing sleep over wondering how I'll respond to all the fan mail I'd get if I won the championship," Anthony said, completely serious.

Wade was speechless. "You came to me just for that?"

"Hahaha… of course not."

Anthony laughed, then put down his book, rubbed his face, and sighed.

"I have an aunt who married and moved to Russia. She told me that the students at Koldovstoretz got the news months ago. They selected their best students and have been training specifically for the tournament for at least two months."

Wade didn't respond—he already knew all of this.

"And Beauxbatons, Ilvermorny, Durmstrang… pretty much all the other schools have been training their students in advance. Especially Durmstrang—you know that school teaches its students dark magic, right?"

"I've heard," Wade replied.

"That's why I'm a bit worried… I went to ask Professor Flitwick whether Hogwarts had any sort of training program, and he said no…"

Anthony said helplessly, "But Professor Flitwick also said that if we organize training and studying ourselves, the school certainly won't stop us…"

At this point, Wade already understood why Anthony had come to him.

Sure enough, Anthony continued, "Wade, I know your schedule is packed, but… if we want to avoid embarrassing Hogwarts in the tournament, someone has to lead the training… and that person can only be you!"
