Chapter 75: Airplane
Crimson blood splattered across Zhang Wenda’s face, slowly trickling down his cheeks.
He stared in shock at the steel behemoth before him, its mouth drenched in fresh, scarlet blood, its wheels turning as it looked his way.
If Pan Dongzi were still here, he would have told him with certainty: airplanes were formidable—much more so than tanks.
Only now did he finally understand why the guards had been so lax. Their mode of transportation was itself a weapon!
「Run!」 Zhang Wenda shouted hoarsely. He picked up the item on the ground and turned to dash toward the nearby fields.
Considering the airplane's limitations in movement, he jumped over ridges and streams, running wherever the terrain was roughest.
At this moment, Song Jianguo caught up, her voice trembling as she shouted at Zhang Wenda: 「Aunt Flo is dead!」
Zhang Wenda turned to look at the gaping-mouthed airliner now moving in their direction. 「This isn’t the time to talk about that!! Split up! If even one escapes, it counts!」
「I’m going to kill it and avenge Aunt Flo!!」 Song Jianguo’s eyes were red, her voice shaking.
Zhang Wenda swung a fist at her, snapping her out of it.
「What the hell is wrong with you?! Didn’t you see the difference in strength?! I order you, no avenging Aunt Flo!」 With that, he and Song Jianguo split, running in opposite directions.
There was no way to fight it. He wasn’t some kind of superhero—how could he possibly battle such a colossal creature?
He leapt over another ridge and, after glancing around, charged into a cornfield, hoping the tall stalks could shield him from view.
After several minutes of running, a panting Zhang Wenda finally had a moment to stop. He turned to glance behind him.
Seeing no trace of the massive creature, he exhaled in relief—but worry crept in for Song Jianguo. 「Could it have gone after her? That foolish girl better not throw her life away.」
As the thought crossed his mind, blood began falling like rain. When he looked up, he saw the enormous airplane, its grotesque maw agape, circling overhead before diving straight toward him.
The sight made Zhang Wenda’s scalp go numb. The airplane could fly!
With what felt like his last shred of hope, Zhang Wenda pressed the Yellow Core. Just as he prepared to enter the Adult World for a final showdown with the airplane, nothing changed around him!
Before he could figure out what went wrong, the airplane dove.
A violent gust flattened all the corn. Zhang Wenda couldn’t even open his eyes.
The next second, his feet left the ground—he was swept up into the air.
Suspended mid-air, with nothing to grab onto, Zhang Wenda saw the airplane’s blood-drenched mouth growing ever larger.
Just as he pulled out the flashlight, a Cat Rope soared toward him on the wind. 「Mouse! Catch it!」
As Zhang Wenda yanked the rope with one hand, sharp little claws extended from the Cat Rope and dug into his flesh.
Below, Song Jianguo and the other cats pulled with all their might, trying to drag Zhang Wenda down, barely managing to do so in time.
Zhang Wenda skimmed past the bloody maw of the airplane. At such close range, he could feel its chilling gaze on him.
「Screw you!」 Zhang Wenda raised his lightsaber and drove it into the airplane’s side, carving a deep gash.
As they passed each other, the pull of the wind ceased, and Zhang Wenda was yanked back to the ground, landing safely in a pile of cats.
「That thing can fly. We can’t outrun it.」 Song Jianguo, her hair windblown and messy, pointed at the circling airplane.
「I’m not blind, thanks.」 Zhang Wenda stared grimly ahead. If it were a regular person, that strike just now would’ve split them in two.
But against this monstrous hulk of steel, that blow amounted to little more than a toenail trim.
If he could use the Yellow Core to return to the Adult World, maybe he’d stand a chance. But right now, he wasn’t even as big as one of its wheels. He had zero chance of winning.
「What do we do? What do we do?」 Zhang Wenda, frantic, kept pressing the Yellow Core, but it seemed completely unresponsive.
He had no idea if the problem lay with the Yellow Core itself or some limitation imposed by the airplane. Compared to Drone-head, a proper soldier, he knew practically nothing about the Third Front Unit.
He didn’t understand how to properly use it or what constraints existed.
Just as the airplane dove again, Zhang Wenda suddenly remembered—besides their small group, they had an ally!
「Come on! With me!」 Zhang Wenda pulled Song Jianguo and sprinted toward Grandpa Niu’s fields.
It was an agonizingly difficult journey, but working together, they barely avoided being devoured.
「Grandpa Niu! Help!!」 With the roaring once again in his ears, Zhang Wenda screamed frantically into the fields ahead.
He shouted several times. Just when he thought the Adult World’s Grandpa Niu couldn’t hear his voice from the Child World, the ground began to tremble.
Ecstatic, he shouted, 「Grandpa Niu! I’m here!!」 He turned, eager to see what Grandpa Niu looked like in this world.
But as he turned, he saw only emptiness. Nothing. The sky was growing darker.
He lifted his head—nothing. He lifted it higher—still nothing. Finally, when his neck was craned back as far as it could go, he saw a wall slowly blotting out the moon and stars.
It wasn’t a wall.
It was water—a wall of water!
A deluge that eclipsed the sky!
Grandpa Niu wasn’t here!
He really had gone upstream to dig out the dam!
This turn of events had caught both Zhang Wenda and the airplane off guard.
As the airplane dove in to strike, it too saw the oncoming wall of water. It tried to ascend rapidly—but it was too late.
In the face of such a calamity, neither Zhang Wenda nor the airplane could resist. They were both swallowed by the flood.
Fortunately, they had the black cats.
They swiftly formed an overturned boat, clutching Zhang Wenda and Song Jianguo, rising quickly in the rushing waters.
When the Cat Boat flipped upright on the surface, both Zhang Wenda and Song Jianguo, their faces purple from holding their breath, gasped desperately for air.
Even with their lungs burning, Zhang Wenda frantically scanned his surroundings. The area had transformed—the fields were now a wide river, rushing with fierce current, heading straight for the concrete buildings nestled against the mountain.
「Where's the airplane? It… it didn’t survive, right?」 Soaked to the bone, Song Jianguo gripped the edge of the boat, eyes scanning the raging water.
「I doubt it. All it could do was fly. No way it could possibly… swim?」
As soon as Zhang Wenda spoke those words, unease crept into his heart.
