Chapter 73: Mission
When Zhang Wenda arrived at the residential building with the two others and a swarm of cats, ducking and dodging along the way, he was surprised to find the place empty.
Before Song Jianguo could frown and ask questions, a large hole opened up in the ceiling. The Drone-head descended slowly, propellers spinning rapidly as it emerged from the hole.
"Sorry, I had to go back and deal with them a bit so they wouldn’t get suspicious.
"All my friends are here. How’s your side?" Zhang Wenda asked.
"Not great, the situation is bad. My earlier speculation was right. Because you startled them, they’re preparing to relocate."
"To avoid any more complications, I’ve already contacted comrades from Bureau 507, but they’ll need time to get here.
So we need to stall them. We can’t let them move prematurely."
After saying this, the Drone-head scanned each of their faces. "It’s not that I don’t trust you, but this isn’t some kid’s game — people die in this. I need to see what you’re capable of."
"You—" Song Jianguo started to speak but was immediately silenced by Zhang Wenda, who ordered her to behave.
After seeing the various forms of the cats, and Aunt Flo punching through a wall with a single blow, the Drone-head nodded in satisfaction.
『Very good, beyond my expectations. In that case, follow me.』
As he spoke, he raised the flashlight in his hand. A beam of light pierced through layer after layer of walls. He led the three of them along the light, explaining as they walked.
"Next, when I create chaos, I need you to find a way to destroy their transportation."
Seeing this, Zhang Wenda was genuinely envious. It seemed there were still many ways this flashlight could be used — it was just that without the inheritance, he could only fumble on his own.
"That side is also dangerous, but since none of you are ordinary, I believe you can handle it."
Following the beam of light straight ahead, Zhang Wenda and the others arrived at an open field, where a bright white giant airliner was parked incongruously in the middle of the field.
"The chaos I create can hold them for at most thirty minutes. You must take it down within that time.
Song Jianguo nudged Zhang Wenda with her fingernail and pointed toward a corner.「Someone’s there.」
Zhang Wenda looked into the distance and saw a few blurry dots — people were on guard, but not many.
『They’re... flying back to the past from the modern day?』Zhang Wenda couldn’t wrap his head around the logic.
『What did you think? Walked back?』
The Drone-head continued,「Remember, only thirty minutes. If the mission fails, get out of here. The farther, the better. If they catch you, I won’t be able to protect you.」
At this moment, Zhang Wenda noticed a contradiction. This clearly wasn’t the Adult World, yet they could still see them.
「Don’t worry. To hide their transportation, they’re all inside Thought Stream No. 1 — same frequency as you. You can deal with them.」The Drone-head spat out a new term.
「Thought Stream?」
「We’re in Thought Stream No. 1 right now. Press the Yellow Core and you’ll be in Thought Stream No. 2. Got it?」
『Then what is a Thought Stream?』From the context, it seemed the Third Front Unit used different terms to refer to the perspectives of the Adult World and the Child World.
「I’m not your teacher, and this isn’t school. Can we save these unimportant questions until after?」The Drone-head glanced calmly at his watch.
『Fine, let’s give it a shot.』Zhang Wenda took out his flashlight. He looked at the blurry figures in the distance and estimated that, with their abilities, they should be able to handle it.
He had far too many questions about the whole world.
He’d have to catch someone and interrogate them thoroughly afterward.
「Sync your watches. Start in five minutes.」With that, the Drone-head turned and left.
「Crap, I don’t even have a watch.」Zhang Wenda sighed, forced to count silently in his head.
Aunt Flo, watching the Drone-head vanish into the distance, whispered to Zhang Wenda,「Kid, I feel like he’s lying to you. This is way too simple — he definitely has other motives besides just creating chaos.」
「Doesn’t matter. We’re just in a transactional relationship. As long as we make it back safely, he can do whatever he wants.」Recalling how the Drone-head once saved him, Zhang Wenda felt he probably wouldn’t go back on his word.
When the long five minutes passed, Zhang Wenda led Song Jianguo and Aunt Flo to the guards. They got close enough to hear them playing cards and bragging.
There were five people in total. Five semi-automatic rifles rested together like a campfire. No one stood watch — they seemed to believe the place was too remote to be worth worrying about, and were totally relaxed.
Gripping the flashlight tightly, Zhang Wenda gestured that he’d take the two on the left, while Song Jianguo and Aunt Flo handled the rest.
Song Jianguo clutched her spear tightly and nodded slightly. Under her command, the kittens silently crept around them.
With a crisp「Clang」, a crushed enamel mug was tossed over. As all eyes turned sharply to the mug, Zhang Wenda and Song Jianguo pounced from behind.
「Vmm」 — a red lightsaber flared out, and under Zhang Wenda’s swing, it stabbed forcefully into someone’s back.
At the same time, Song Jianguo flung her spear. The sharp point, aided by a tug of the cat rope, plunged with a squelch straight into someone’s eye.
As Zhang Wenda and Song Jianguo struck, Aunt Flo burst out of the enamel mug, her massive fist smashing down on someone’s skull.
Screams and shouts echoed everywhere — chaos reigned instantly. But with the element of surprise on their side, Zhang Wenda’s group clearly held the upper hand.
Just as Zhang Wenda pulled the lightsaber from someone’s body, he saw another enemy pull a glowing object from their coat and hurl it at him.
Zhang Wenda’s scalp tingled. He dodged quickly.
The object brushed past him — a glass bottle containing a thundercloud with lightning inside. But this time, symbols had been drawn on the glass.
The bottle flew past and shattered on the ground.
Just when Zhang Wenda thought the enemy’s bottle-tossing trick had failed, a black cloud burst out from the shattered glass, rapidly inflating into a thundercloud man — towering and crackling with lightning, like a small giant.
「This is bad!」Zhang Wenda braced himself, expecting lightning magic — but instead, the thundercloud man picked up a semi-automatic rifle nearby and unleashed a wild barrage at them.
