Chapter 99: A Dog Bites Lv Dongbin
Chapter 99: A Dog Bites Lv Dongbin
He returned the wallet to Secretary-General Li, with a smile said, "Is this your wife? She’s quite beautiful."
Secretary-General Li looked a bit embarrassed, his smile very fake: "Yes, my wife was a campus belle back in the day. Of course, she’s beautiful."
Xu Xiangbei leered and joked, "I like to chase campus belles, seems we have similar interests."
Secretary-General Li gave an awkward smile but thought to himself, who shares the same interest as you, my liking is love, your liking is lust, how could they be compared? This is no miracle doctor, he’s just a small-time thug.
Secretary Qin’s lounge was a standard suite, with a bedroom inside and a living room outside, mostly furnished with red sandalwood pieces, finely crafted, and exuding an antique charm.
Secretary-General Li led Xu Xiangbei into the living room, politely said, "Dr. Xu, please have a seat."
Xu Xiangbei sat on the sofa, and Secretary-General Li personally poured him a cup of tea, the kind often used in hotels, rather bland in flavor.
On the red sandalwood coffee table, there was a pack of Zhonghua cigarettes, and Secretary-General Li pulled one out, handed it to Xu Xiangbei, smilingly asked, "Dr. Xu, do you smoke?"
Seeing they were Zhonghua cigarettes, Xu Xiangbei was delighted and quickly took the cigarette handed to him by Secretary-General Li, picked up the lighter from the coffee table, and lit it himself.
"Of course, I’d smoke a few of such good cigarettes; Secretary Li, do you smoke?"
A flash of disdain flicked across Secretary-General Li’s eyes, fleeting, yet he maintained a habitual smile: "I smoke rarely, this is Secretary Qin’s lounge, it’s inconvenient for me to smoke here, generally, I smoke some when drafting in my own office."
Secretary-General Li spoke tactfully, implying that since this was the Secretary’s lounge, they shouldn’t smoke here, and when he earlier offered a cigarette, it was out of politeness, expecting Xu to decline.
But Xu Xiangbei had no idea about such niceties, and happily responded, "Oh, since you smoke less, why not give me this pack then?"
Xu Xiangbei picked up the pack of Zhonghua cigarettes and directly shoved it into his pocket.
Secretary-General Li watched and, though he did not stop him, internally regarded Xu Xiangbei as worthless, lacking manners and decorum, being petty, with none of these fitting the image of a miracle doctor.
Despite doubting Xu Xiangbei’s abilities and character, everything, Secretary Qin instructed him to entertain Xu Xiangbei well, so he had to fulfill his duties.
Curiously, Secretary-General Li asked, "How did you come to know Secretary Qin?"
"Dean Zhang introduced us, asked me to treat Secretary Qin’s chronic back pain."
Upon hearing of Dean Zhang, Secretary-General Li naturally recognized it: "You’re at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of the People’s Hospital? I know Director Tang in TCM too, is he your direct superior?"
Xu Xiangbei reclined on the sofa, crossing his legs, his body jittering like electrified, animatedly laughed: "You take me as an intern doctor huh. I’m a consultant of the TCM department, not even Director Tang or Dean Zhang Fuen can order me; they invited me to treat. I agree if I please, or not if I don’t."
Secretary-General Li smiled and nodded on the surface, yet internally did not believe Xu Xiangbei, feeling he was far too arrogant, full of himself, wondering how he tricked Secretary Qin into trusting him.
Seeing Secretary-General Li unfriendly, Xu Xiangbei, alone smoking and drinking tea, felt bored. He gently patted Secretary-General Li’s shoulder, "Secretary Li, how long have you been married?"
A flicker of displeasure appeared in Secretary-General Li’s eyes. Although below Secretary Qin in rank and bearing responsibility for him, he had control of the entire municipal office, quite powerful. Usually, whoever met him would show respect, who dared touch his shoulder?
He lightly brushed off the shoulder Xu Xiangbei patted, filled with disdain, coolly said, "Seven years."
Xu Xiangbei acted all-knowing, experienced, chuckled: "Seven years, huh, the seven-year itch. If you had a child, your marriage might have lasted, but alas, no kids, means you’re close to divorce, oh."
Secretary-General Li’s face went ashen, his hands holding the meeting schedule shook, as Xu Xiangbei hit the sorest spot.
Being in a high position, he rarely discussed personal matters, mentioning little to others about his wife.
Seven years without a child, despite many efforts, with no result, their relationship crumbled, turning cold, seemingly on the brink of collapse.
He deeply buried these matters, barely known, yet Xu Xiangbei casually brought it up, mercilessly unveiling the scar he always tried to hide.
Secretary-General Li could no longer hold back, jumped up from the sofa, furious, "What nonsense are you spouting, do you know me? How do you know we’re divorcing? You must be looking for trouble, you fraud, if not for Secretary Qin, I’d have the guards take you now and throw you onto the street."
Raging mad, Xu Xiangbei remained cheeky, puffing smoke, "No need for that anger, isn’t it just infertility? How big of a deal is that? If you asked, I guarantee to help you, make you last longer, even get your wife pregnant this month. Just clarifying, I don’t mean I help with conception, you do it yourself, okay?"
Secretary-General Li trembled with outrage at Xu Xiangbei’s bluntness, "Hah, you scoundrel, utterly unreasonable."
"Have you been having chest pain lately? Persistent cough, erectile dysfunction, but medical exams show nothing wrong?"
Doubt flickered in Secretary-General Li’s eyes, his face even paler, Xu Xiangbei actually got it right.
He thought secretly, this guy probably just guessed, a trick common to charlatans, picking shared issues to mention, blind luck would get some right.
Xu Xiangbei seemed to read Secretary-General Li’s mind, puffing smoke, regrettably said, "What a pity, good intentions mistaken like a donkey’s liver, a dog biting Lv Dongbin not recognizing a benefactor, I meant to help cure you, save your marriage, yet you call me a thug and a fraud, fine, I’ll act like I saw nothing."
Secretary-General Li was about to leave, but turned and calmed down, albeit Xu Xiangbei’s crude, vexing words, all were true; he simply hid them deeply, not wishing anyone to know.
His anger gradually subsided, mixed with fright, and a bit of hope.
He turned back, looked at Xu Xiangbei on the sofa, half-believing, half-doubting, "Can you really cure my illness?"
